I just rescued a lutino cockatiel from and abusive aviary, there was this old man who clearly did not care about the birds at all. He had stuffed a tiny backyard aviary with breeding boxes and then left the birds there to breed so that he could make money. They had no water bowls at all and there was only one other perch other that the ones on the breeding box. In total there were 11 cockatiels one of which was a baby, there was this amazing woman who found them by accident and bought all of them to home until they were sold. She created an amazing an enriching environment for them and then help nurse them back to health while she was selling them. Sadly when she went to pick up the baby it was dead and the youngest, a lutino, had had her head feathers plucked bare and one of her wings was bleeding, this was chickpea the cockatiel I rescued. I've had a budgie for 3 years and wanted to get her a friend and I felt I couldn't just leave chickpea there because she was being rejected by a bunch of other people because of her feather loss. Brought her home and she is so sweet, sadly she is scared of large spaces so even though we bought her a flight cage she prefers to sleep in the smaller travel cage that we brought her home in. her wings were clipped really far up and they were done with those crinkle craft scissors so she is very off balanced but she is happy and healthy and recovering quickly, she loves training and is so curious, and she my little miracle

@@friendlyghost8293 I have watched it and I didn't buy them from the breeder directly, I'm friends with someone who rescues birds and she also bought the breeding pair from this particular person because the breeder didn't care, he just wanted money, he is no longer breeding but I do agree, that in general buying birds from bad breeders is a bad idea.😊

If you know cat body language, you can tell the cat's tail is flicking from side to side, they do that when they're about to hunt a prey, attack, or mad. So that cat is showing a huge sign that she/he is ready to attack or possibly hurt the bird because of the tail flicking from side to side. Just people, if you have a prey species of animals, DO NOT let them come in contact with a predator species of animals! It's not cute, it's dangerous.

Another issue with the family buying the bird is that you should get the cage and everything before and set everything up in advance to minimize stress for the bird. The less time in the box the better. Also please get at least 2 budgies!
@Chifly-te5vc3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to get two buggies from the pet store (I would adopt but the closest parakeet is 70 miles away) but they alway have mixed batches and they don’t know the genders. I did *not* want to end up accidentally breeding two.
@PiedraDeIjada3 жыл бұрын
@@Chifly-te5vc yikes that is bad. They should be able to tell them apart. So they either are badly trained or the budgies are a bit young. Also essentially you don't need to worry about breeding as long as you make sure the female can't settle down in a dark, cavelike place. I have 3 males and 3 females and so far no issues with eggs. The two pairs mate quite a bit, especially in spring, but that never resulted in eggs.
@LittleEarth73 жыл бұрын
I would have but I inherited my 2 budgies a couple of weeks ago after they were being passed from pillow to post. I’m learning as I go along. A quick question while I’m here; at the moment their cage is taller than it is wide and I know I need to get the opposite, how would I get them into a new cage? They arent comfortable with me yet even though they are now flying out of their cage (I leave it open so they can get some exercise) and will go back in at bed time, but they still get nervous when I put my hand in the cage. Should I wait until they are used/comfortable with me before I get a new cage?
@PiedraDeIjada3 жыл бұрын
@@LittleEarth7 that's a difficult one, I never had that specific situation. I'd say it is probably better to allow them to get settled first. Since they get a lot of time out of the cage it should not be super urgent to replace it. Especially since they were passed around a lot they need a feeling of stability. When they are comfortable you can introduce changes, such as a better suited cage.
@LittleEarth73 жыл бұрын
@@PiedraDeIjada thanks for replying. Yeah, I’ll wait a few weeks I think. I’m glad they feel safe enough to come out of the cage. It’ll give me chance to educate myself about budgies. I dont know if you did a video or explained this but where do your birds sleep?
@Luv.Gracee3 жыл бұрын
If you have a pet bird,they sleep on perches, but if you get a platform (that’s made out of wood) the bird would usually sleep there too. But if you have a dark area for your bird take it out of their cage, they get hormonal and aggressive. And if you have a female bird, and a happy hut (or any dark spaces) they can lay eggs. So it’s very important to not have a dark corner/happy hut in the cage. Yes, it’s fine to cover the cage at night with a light blanket/ sheet. But some birds don’t like the blanket on them, so just make sure your bird is fine with the blanket! :)

Just like in general if I have the cage in my room will it smell because my mom said I can’t get a budgie because they smell. I don’t even know how my mom knows they smell if she has never had one but I heard birds DONT smell bad if you clean them and their cage regularly. Is it true tho I really want a bird and I need to convince my min if they smell bad or not
@lizziehn59283 жыл бұрын
Healthy budgies won't smell at all! It's mainly the scent of the food that people get mixed up with. Make sure to remove any fresh food mixes after a few hours to prevent rot, and to deep clean their cage every week or so.

Hello! I had a question, My neighbors green cheek conure named Mango keeps biting everyone. Even her owner, why is this and how do you make it stop? Most of the time Mango does break the skin or makes bite marks.

Could be hormones or territorial aggression that was left unchecked. I would suggest trying to figure out the cause (if it only happens around a certain area, to certain people, etc) and working on training through that. For example, if it were cage aggression, you will want to have the bird out as often as possible and away from the cage. Removing the cage from the equation will help decrease biting and other protective tendencies -- as a lot of birds get defensive around their food and water. Overall, I would really suggest practicing target training and positive reinforcement. Don't punish the bird if it bites, but be sure to reward it when it doesn't. Best of luck!

Stressed birds will only eat when no one is watching, your bird is likely doing fine. I'd hang out around the cage but avoid directly interacting until your bird's body language shows they're calm/relaxed.

hi i'm getting a Conure soon and was wondering if you have any starter tips? i have two budgies and i dont know how well they'll get along.
@lizziehn59283 жыл бұрын
- Conures are energetic lil dudes! I'd definitely try getting some little balls with bells they can move around and grab. Foraging toys will do well too. - Biting! Conures can have a tendency to bite to communicate "no" or to play/get your attention. This is pretty normal for them. - Terrible twos. Most green cheeks are given up once they hit puberty, unfortunately. This is due to their notoriously difficult maturing stage, expect bites and and territorial behavior. However, with training and/or patience, you will get through this! - Introducing them to other birds will be a little difficult, so I'd suggest keeping them apart at first. If you give one a treat, give the others a treat. If you see a fight breaking out, do your best to separate them. Best of luck!

@lizziehn59283 жыл бұрын
I would open the cage up and allow him to come out on his own, maybe with some treats near the exit to act as persuasion. He will need some time to get used to his environment, even if you've had him for three weeks already. Best of luck!

i have two cats and one bird, when i’m sleeping the cats are in the room w me (with the door shut) and the bird is outside in his cage, during the day when hes out the cats are also out but they’re never left alone and the reason is bc i read that the more curious the cats are about the bird the more chance they’ll suddenly attack so i’m trying to just get them used to the birds presence and him as well but other than that we never leave them alone in the same place unsupervised, do u have any tips? should i continue what im doing or is this a mistake?

@lizziehn59283 жыл бұрын
Patience, positive reinforcement, and personal space will be your three keys to success! Patience - Not everything will go according to plan at first, but that's okay! Birds (especially small prey species) will take time to trust humans. Don't give up! Positive reinforcement - Be sure to reward your bird with praise or treats if they make progress! This can include when they're calm, if they come up to you, or if they land on you in a desired location. Millet can work pretty well as a treat, just make sure they don't have much of it in their normal diet. Personal space - While you don't want to give up, you WILL want to respect your bird's wishes through it's body language. If it doesn't want to be touched, don't touch it. If it doesn't want to interact, pause on the interaction for a bit. This will help prevent you from getting bitten and your bird from stressing out much further. Additionally, you can try out different forms of training (target and/or clicker) as a fun bonding activity. Best of luck taming your new friend!
