The thing about Kevin Smith is that he will work tirelessly weaving a sweet, endearing love story and then burying it under nine tons of raunch. It works well and as you watch his films you'll see them get better and better. There are three Clerks films to the Askewniverse, but I recommend watching in release order to appreciate the evolution of the cinematic aesthetic. Mallrats is next. Many great laughs to be had.

Best description of this movie ever, "That movie was ... something." lol. Silent Bob was actually the director Kevin Smith. It was in black and white because it was cheaper to make; it's an independent film and he paid for the production on his credit cards if I remember correctly. I worked in a grocery store about the time this came out, and this was so much closer to being a documentary than most people realize. You didn't include it in your edit, but I had people lean across a display of something to ask me if we had the thing they were leaning on. The egg guy and milk maids are real. We also had a group of people that did it with yogurt. We had a guy who pulled all the bagged chips (crisps) off the shelf and took them to the produce scales. He'd buy the two heaviest, then restock the shelf. This is the start of a cinematic universe of sorts. Jay and Silent Bob turn up in the rest, but all the movies are slightly connected. There's even a crossover with the Marvel movies that's a nice little Nod to Kevin Smith (Silent Bob). When I started the graveyard desk shift at a small hotel, I was told to watch Four Rooms. This is also basically a documentary and nearly as weird, but with much better acting. It's not Best Movie Ever (tm) material, but if you've ever worked in a hotel, there are bits that you'll find uncomfortably familiar.

I worked it two different retail stores, one an auto parts store and the other a big hardware chain. The hardware chain was by far the worst. Never worked in a grocery store, but the local mom and pop store my parents shopped at when I was a kid, well, this guy was opening the jars of salsa and taking a sniff. One heard the pop of the lid, then another pop, and another. He ruined several jars of salsa doing that. There is no shortage of weirdos out there.

After I counted down the drawer I’d smoke weed with the pizza guys, they were juniors and seniors, I was a freshman. Back in the land before time, when I work at a video store, one of my favorite things to do was inventory. The owner of the store did not trust anyone, so two people always had to do inventory. One person would read the title of the DVD out loud, and the other person had to find it on the shelf. It got really funny when we had to inventory the adult video section. For some reason, the owner of the store stopped having me do inventory?? Maybe it's because I used to kind of yell the video titles out?

To put things in perspective...This movie was shot for $27,500 in 1994. When adjusted for inflation in 2023 this is equivalent to $57,000. The budget for 2001 a Space Odyssey was $10.5 million in 1968 which is equivalent to $93 million in 2023. Pretty amazing.

The movie changed from its initial idea about a weird, nightmare of weirdos at a convenience store to a straight-up comedy just before shooting. So the intertitles ("Harbinger" "Vindication") were a leftover from that previous idea. The original story structure was modeled after Dante's Inferno, (yes, that's why Dante is named Dante), and each intertitle was supposed to represent a metaphorical layer of Retail Hell. It didn't quite work out that way in the end, but that's why they were there. As for the words? Kevin Smith literally picked them out of a dictionary in the car on the way to the lab where they were going to be printed; he picked them based on how they sounded.

Hi Dawn, Welcome the View Askewnivers. This was an independent film made by Kevin Smith writer, director, and your favorite character Silent Bob. He wrote and directed this and Maxed out several credit cards to get it made in hopes that one of the big movie companies would pick it up. He did not get picked up by one of the big movie companies. However, it was picked up y a smaller independent company, The Weinstein Brothers. Unfortunately, years later we found out about some horrible things at least one of those brothers had done abusing his power. The good thing is that a career of Kevin Smith, and some of his friends was launched and Kevin Smith has made some great movies, IMO. I hope you will continue your journey. as you will see recurring characters and actors, sometimes playing different characters, throughout his movies. I would say next check out Mallrats. That was his next movie after this where he actually had a budget, Anyway, hope you enjoyed, and continue your journey.

It was black and white because it was cheaper. Kevin Smith worked in the convenience store and got permission to film there I believe. I heard the 'I assure you we're open' was so they didn't have to open the front and deal with the fact that it was supposedly daylight - but since he filmed at night there would be no natural light. Also - you said Silent Bob's line was the best - all lines were his as he is Kevin Smith - he wrote it all. The panning to the left and right in the back of the car was due to a hand held camera - again it was cheaper. I think he only spent $27,500 on it. Every one of his movies is worth a watch.

And Randal became a hero to most of us. Yea, he’s pretty much a nihilist and loves chaos, but he cares about pretty much no one but Dante. We’d walk down the hallway doing the Randal walk, and you’d hear someone yell down the hall “I’m not even supposed to be here today.”

Two things: First; there is a Clerks 2 (as well as a Clerks 3). And second, it was in black and white to save money. The main filming location was at the real convenience store Kevin Smith (director/writer/Silent Bob) worked at (which he did during the days while filming at night...which is actually why the windows were covered to hide the fact that it was night). Since the lights in the store were fluorescent lights, they would have had to either install all new lighting or use much more expensive cameras in order to be able to film in colour...so he just went with black and white.

You really need to watch the entire View Askew lineup...Kevin Smith is a frickin' genius. There will be things that will amaze and confound you at the same time. Don't let this one movie detract you from watching the others. This one is 100% hit or miss for most people. Very niche. When it comes down to brass tacks, these movies actually have good (and to a serious degree) relatable stories...

having watched your reaction am glad you enjoyed it. Kevin smith films get a lot better with him making the first. The View Askew universe is well worth going through, "Mall Rats" "Chasing Amy" "Dogma" and more....and trust me Kevin Smith gets more seasoned and polished. And you do know Kevin Smith played Silent Bob in the film....obviously as gave himself the best line of the movie..lol...cheers...I still vote you should keep going on the films of Kevin Smith

The movie was in black-and-white because the fluorescent lighting in the store would look green on color film, and they couldn’t afford enough film lights to not use the store’s fluorescent lights too.

OMG! Dawn.... you just HAVE to go down this rabbit hole! I'm literally begging you to! Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Clerks III, ALL tell an overall story. (more or less in that order.... although Chasing Amy technically takes place a day before Clerks) Jay and Silent Bob also do a cameo in the movie "Fanboys".

Mallrats is the one after this one. It's in color. The main reason this one was in black and white was because it's easier to manage. It was a very low budget movie.

After watching this, I hope you continue the Jay and Silent Bob series. I think you would enjoy the next one, Mallrats. There are 3 Clerks movies, but, there are movies in between them. I worked in a convenience store and a video store in the 90's. This movie is completely relatable.

The thing to keep in mind about Kevin Smith's films is that he is a Gen-X director. As a Gen-X'er, Clerks is one of my favorite "nostalgia" movies. There are a lot of things in it that remind me of what it was like growing up from a mid-1980's teenager to a 1990's adult. I was an intelligent underachiever. I worked at a video store. And like Silent Bob, I was taciturn and wore a trench coat like a suit of armor. Some things to keep in mind about Clerks: 1. This film was made before geek/nerd culture was widely accepted by society. It was also made shortly after the internet was made public for everyone. At the time, we Gen-X'er geeks/nerds didn't have many films that represented who we really were. Film and television were full of characters meant to represent us but in fact were just distortions of what Baby Boomers saw when they looked at Gen-X'ers. I feel like Clerks (and Pump Up The Volume) are great counterpoints to the icky-sweet Baby Boomer make-believe of John Hughes films. (There's a conversation in Dogma where Smith alludes to this.) Notice how Clerks portrays the non-geeks/nerds in the film: The Jock, The Girl Hot For The Jock, The Corporate Shill, etc. In the 1980's, those were the characters that were often held up as the "ideal" people. (The one exception is the Pervy Old Geezer, but he was there for an entirely different reason...). In Clerks, the geeks/nerds are shown with humanity, not ridicule. 2. I've never bothered to find out Kevin Smith's views about his films (I'm firmly in the "Death of the Author" camp), but I suspect the fast dialogue was partly a reaction to the American Baby Boomer comedies that had slower dialogue. And Kevin Smith probably watched Monty Python and Black Adder as a teenager just like I did. (I don't think there is any way to adequately explain how magical British comedies were for Gen-X'ers in America.) IMO, Clerks uses a 3-layer dialogue structure. The first layer is the casual daily conversation/actions. Just surface-level stuff with no deeper meaning. The second layer is the humor/absurdity of those surface level conversations/actions. The third layer is the deeper meanings/themes implied by that surface-level stuff. Clerks is NOT a film you can watch passively. It doesn't hold your hand and guide you through the story like SO many American films do. 3. Before you give up on the View Askew universe, I would suggest watching Mallrats, Dogma and Chasing Amy. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back has some good moments, but I feel it is more of a Gen-X "memberberry" film. Clerks 3 is perhaps the most Gen-X-centric Kevin Smith film. For us, it is incredibly poignant, but from what I've heard online, other generations are very disappointed with it. (I haven't seen the Jay & Silent Bob reboot, or Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!).

It was in black and white because it's a lot cheaper than color, and they had very little money. Today, though, with almost everything shot on digital instead of film, they probably cost the same.

I met Kevin Smith/Silent Bob and Jason Mewes/Jay in July. Kevin and Jason are amazing people to meet. Kevin takes his time to talk to his fans. I told Kevin my favorite scene was the woman asking where is the new release section pointing to her. I said I been in that situation from old jobs. Kevin said that was back in the day where you used to rent movies. I said I grabbed his movie at a mom and pops video store and rented his movie. I told him I been a fan since this movie. When getting a picture with him he gave me a hug. He is an amazing person. I met Brian O’Halloran last year that plays Dante. He is a very cool dude and takes time to talk to fans also

There's literally a universe: in order, Mallrats, Chasing Amy (masterpiece), Dogma (ditto), Clerks: the Animated Series, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, The Flying Car (short film), Clerks: the Lost Scene (animated short about what happened at the funeral), Clerks 2, (love it) Jay and Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie (imho, crap and not necessary), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks 3 (love it as much as part 2).
