Reasons why people will walk or drive you to destination instead of giving directions. 1. Lonely people wish to enjoy the company while walking or driving you to destination. 2. Communication hurdles due to language differences. 3. Small town mindset where landmarks like pubs are known but not the street names. 4. Poor nativational skills or map reading skills 5. Empathy compassion and helpful mindset to not expose the lost person to additional stress.

Great video! As an American of Irish descent I found your perspective very interesting. And I really love that you don't try to change your beautiful natural Irish coloring; I've always thought that pretty much everyone looks their best just by being comfortable in their own skin. Be proud of what you already are, whoever you are! Finally--I love that you did this one entirely in Irish; it was very helpful to hear you speaking the language naturally. I'm looking forward to the day I don't need the Bearla subtitles!

I have a funny story about people in Ireland having red hair. When I was on my honeymoon in Ireland, my wife and I had to take different ferries to the Aran Islands (we spent two nights on Inis Meáin) and her ferry went first. When my ferry was arriving I was looking for her on the dock but I couldn't see her. As I got closer, I realized that the Irish looking woman with red hair was actually my wife, who normally has brown hair (and is not at all Irish). I guess something about the light or maybe something in the water made her hair look much redder than normal. So maybe Irish people only have more red hair than other people when they are in Ireland. We also had someone be extraordinarily nice to us in Limerick. We parked somewhere that looked reasonable to us and when we got out of the car we asked someone if it was ok to park there. He asked us how long we would be and we said just an hour or two, then he said we could park there. I asked if it was public parking and he said it was his driveway, but he didn't mind us parking there for a few hours.

Go raibh maith agaith! I’ve just started learning Irish with Duolingo , I plan to move to Ireland in the near future and then take proper classes. Your channel and ig are so helpful. This is a very interesting video about stereotypes, I had heard some of them before but I’m surprised and angry about the not-modern country and the red hair ones (I love red hair so much). I hear a lot of stereotypes about my country too, and the one that most saddens me is that all Brazilians like football, carnival and getting drunk. I hate all those and I’m a proud Brazilian, I think it’s so sad that some people think of countries as places where everyone is the same.

I just subscribed to your channel the other day. I loved hearing you speak the language and reading the subtitles. I'm looking forward to learning the language. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Please forgive the incorrect spelling of my first name. My Aunt Shella told my dad that if he spelled it Sean everyone would pronounce it Seen! The Irish and Ulster Scots here in the U.S had to fight to obtain respect here. There was a saying amongst the Germans and English here in the 1700s. If you were going to war with the French or Indians, you wanted the Scot/Irish right beside you. If there was no war, you wanted them as far away as possible😊 Thank you again for all that you do.

I think the stereotype about the drinking is...there are tons of Irish pubs-especially in places that Irish have historically resided. Like NYC. Boston. Chicago. Lots of other places but you probably wouldn’t be familiar with them, like my region Bangor Maine. And the reason for this is Irish weren’t typically welcomed in Anglo bars. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Paddy wagon. But that kinda stems from the prejudices against the Irish. A paddy wagon is a police van that holds multiple suspects. And the stereotype of them fighting is from all the drinking. You mentioned I believe, about the reluctance of Americans to say or write St Paddy. This (Paddy) was once considered a derogatory term for the Irish. Also Mick as well. So it’s just a thing our forefathers wouldn’t write. So the St Patty Day written or displayed as it was actually an attempt not to be racists.

I have been studying Irish for some time now and it is not easy, the structure, the spelling, the grammar, everything is a challenge (at least for me). But you are right Irish is a beautiful language. This video gave me for the first time the experience of listening and understanding (with the subtitles of course) a flow of Irish speech without being completely lost. That is a magic feeling. So go raibh maith agat (very much) by the way, what would be "thank you very much" in Irish? For GRMA is only thank you, isn't it? Go raibh maith agat agus comhghairdeas

Unfortunately the stereotype of the Irish drunkard comes from America when there was a lot of anti Irish sentiment due to high levels of immigration and historically drinking levels in Ireland have always been pretty similar to the rest of Europe. So this stereotype was always untrue and was just used as to discriminate against the Irish.

The English and Scottish definitely promoted the stereotype of Irish people in Ireland being drunkards as well. Especially the settlers/planters who took Irish land and forced the locals to work their lands. Poor people being worked to the bone by foreigners spend their extra coin on alcohol to deal with their shit situation? It is more common across Europe than one would believe.

I visited Dublin like four years ago for about a week, didn’t have any preconceived notions. Caint say any of the stereotypes bore out, except maybe the “friendly” one. I got the impression Dublin was a boomtown, lotsa construction, they were building some tram thingy, also lotsa young folks from all over, and no shortage of tourists, but I dug it all, a lively city, lots to see and do, all good! Only got one day trip out of town but it was great, County Wicklow is absolutely beautiful, I bet a lot of the country is like that, anyone who calls that a backwater may just be a lil backwards their own selves. And speaking of stereotypes, I still smile when I think on how every time I told someone I’m from Texas they’d tell me a story about this guy from Texas they knew who was like eight feet tall and drank beer by the gallon. (I’m 5’ 8” on a good day and gluten free, and while I do have a couple friends who are indeed beer-soaked giants, they are the exception and not the rule, so, y’know.) Great video as always, lovin’ the as Gaeilge series as I seem to catch a bit more each time, and sure did appreciate the Snoop cameo!

Dia dhuit, Molly! I don't trust the movies and TV that depict certain countries with stereotypes. I'd rather see the real thing by making a trip and see the world. I read all about the histories and cultures of other countries. Hundreds of years ago, Ireland was once a Celtic paganism majority before catholicism came to the island. Halloween originally came from your country based on those very beliefs and it's a very popular holiday in the United States. They used turnips to carve Jack O'Lanterns before pumpkins. And I read that Celtic paganism is having a revival. Is that true?
