Damon Wayans discovered Jim Carey at a comedy club. Jim said that not only did he connect him with Keenan Ivory Wayans, he let him live with him and his family for a few months until he got on his feet.

It was an amazing time for comedy. Jim Carey was a force all on his own with his physical comedy and outrageous characters. With the Wayans & cast of A Living Color, it was magic. We never missed it. I remember my living room with 10 young men and women, all roaring with laughter regularly.

I wouldn't say Jim Carrey stole the show. They had a LOT of hysterically funny skits. Carrey was right at home with the rest of them. I'd have LOVED to attend one of Wayans family picnics. That whole family was funny!

The Reverend pulling a cell phone out his pocket was funny to see because only 2% of Americans had cellphones around 1990. So seeing anyone actually have a cellphone meant they were of some importance. The cost of a cellphone was about $1200 which would be around $2800 in 2023. You couldn't text either. Calls only. 😅

One of the best comedy shows ever!! It's where Jennifer Lopez basically got her start as well, as one of the 'Fly Girls'. Jim Carrey, one of our best Canadian actors/comedians, we love him up here!!

At that time, in the '90s, Jim Carrey was making fun of pastors such as Oral Roberts and Jim Baker, he even made fun of Jimmy Swaggart, when he said "I have sinned against you" (It's on utube) I believe that Damon Wayans was poking fun at Reverend Ike. Reverend Ike was very extravagant, as far as preachers go. He was quoted for saying "the best thing that he could do for poor people is not to be one of them!"

That "Lord, I have sinned against you" line at 4:28 was a reference to the famous evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's on air confession after he was caught entering a hotel room with a prostitute in 1988. It would have been easily recognized at the time this aired.

You're just more familiar with Jim. If you watched the show, he wasn't the only stand out. Damon Waynes, David Alan Greer, Tommy Davidson & Jaime Foxx to name a few. Jim just got more film opportunities. Not hating on Jim. He is a legend. You should check out Major Payne starring Damon.
