For context, I'm 53. I remember an episode where one of the two critics was accidentally hit on the head with a heavy object. This (somehow) resulted in the character becoming a stereotypical straight guy who loved violent movies and female nuded. The episode ended with him getting hit on the head (again) and he was magically gay again. The critic was so happy to have his gay partner back. But more importantly, so was the audience. Everyone laughed and cheered with joy when we had our outrageous gay duo back again. No one was happy that the film critic was finally "normal" and no one was disappointed that he went back to being gay.

Damon Wayans was the best of the Wayans brothers, especially on this show. Of course, Keenan-Ivory Wayans was the creative force, Damon was just so naturally funny.

One of the most controversial shows in the late 80’s and early 90’s was “Married with Children”. It ran for 11 seasons on FOX and was controversial from the first episode to last episode. The main characters were Al and Peggy Bundy and their son and daughter and their next door neighbors. Al works as a shoe salesman and is miserable. You can find several “Best of” videos of his best insults which are absolutely hilarious! It won’t take long to get the controversy.

Yes, there was stuff like this on tv back then. In living color was a huge show. We all loved it. All the stereo types were made fun of, and people just laughed about it. Because we all knew it was just comedy. And didn't get but hurt with a simple joke

Fox was a pioneer of sorts when they started up. There was this, Married with Children and the Simpsons. Once they became big enough and earned the NFL rights to broadcast NFC games, they became a powerhouse. These shows shaped how TV has evolved, but also were the early creators of the backlash we see today. Lots of "Karens" particularly hated and protested "Married with Children".

The way Britt reacts to In Living Color is the way I (almost 50 years old) feel about All in the Family. I would love to see reactions to AitF. But as we learned from Norman Lear (AitF) and the Wayans brothers (ILC), talking about these topics can be extremely controversial, but also brings certain taboo topics to the forefront so that we can talk about it openly and honestly. By depicting the stereotypes as absurdly as they were, they did more to quash false stereotypes than they did to spread them.

I was a kid when this came on. It was a phenomenon. And it was on Fox which was a new channel back then and they were the renegades of the tv networks. They did things very differently and it was wonderful

IF I remember correctly, this aired on FOX and this station was just in its infancy stages. Therefore, they pushed the envelope on alot of things. Early (married with children, X-files, Beverly hills 90210, Melrose place. etc....) they were give some latitude with content.

Here's what you have to understand. "In Living Color" was a Fox show. The network was not that old at the time, and they were trying to be noticed like "the big three" networks. They allowed shows to be a lot bolder with their content than the other networks did at the time. Shows like this and "Married with Children" would never have flown on the other networks. That is why Fox put them on. While "the big three" went right, Fox went left in order to attract viewers. It was the perfect strategy.

Yes we have progressed where any curse word is allowed , nudity is allowed , soft porn can be seen and the talk shows are now either political or trash journalism but shows like this are banned because someone's feelings got hurt . Yes we have really progressed as a society .

Nah you’ve it got it backwards actually lol. Back then you ONLY had cable tv, radio etc. all censored and monitored. NOW with all the additional platforms you can get away with WAY more. How many tv shows on cable you couldn’t say certain words?, sitcom on Netflix and let the curses fly because theirs no one monitoring the same way. Satellite radio where again you can curse and say what you like.

Back then we didn't have to worry about offending anyone or anyone offending us. We didn't have to worry about locking our doors at night or school shootings, we could walk down the street and not have to worry about drive by shootings. I grew up in one of the best generations ever. Afros, Bell-bottoms and Platt Form Shoes was the era (late 60's - 1970's) I was just a kid during those years but it was the best time to be living in unlike today.

@@LeShawnTho Oh I lived my childhood in the 70's and it was the best time back then. You didn't have to worry about strangers coming in your house at night or during the day. I remember when it was halloween all the houses had their lights on giving out candy you didn't have to worry someone putting anything in your candy back then, you heard about it but they were few and far between. As for going to school I was young when the riots of the 60's were still happening in school but it all went away by the time I was in 1st grade and never really experienced it as much as my older siblings did they remembered it. I had a better experience in then they did when I graduated from high school you could feel that the times were changing you feel it was starting to get bad within 3 years of my leaving school they had police patrolling the school grounds which was a shock to me. So yeah I had a wonderful childhood without any kind of worries or drive by shootings.

Around the same time as this was on, there was a skit show from up in Canada called Kids in the Hall. It was five guys and they played the roles of the women often, with lots of stuff that wouldn't likely get air today, plenty of dressup, social commentary, I think they dropped the f****t word numerous times. It wasn't even a specialty network it aired on, it was the national broadcaster

We had Censors back then... But we got away with FAR more than you can today! But back then, one slip of the tongue or misunderstanding wouldn't cost you your entire Career! You may have been "busted" (I.E. Pee Wee Herman or Mel Gibson), but eventually they were forgiven... and that's something that DOESN'T Happen today! When someone decides they don't like you, they HAVE to tear you down... Why, I'll never know. People don't just walk away the way we did.

I was a kid when In Living Color came out. There was nothing else like it really. You had Married With Children first, which really pushed the boundaries of the late 80s. Then The Simpsons also very late 80s. But they were also different from what In Living Color was.

If you don't know who John Malkovich is, you need to watch the late 90's movie "Being John Malkovich". They say his name something like a hundred times (exaggerating) in one scene. You'll never forget his name. ;-) He's also amazing in "Rounders" with Matt Damon. More of a guy film since it's about poker, but his character is as unique as you'll find.

If you don't know who John Malkovich is, you really need to go on a movie hunt. You'll love him. I think he's most known, today, for his role as Humma Kavula from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. My favorite role was in Making Mr. Right, which I highly suggest you watch. I didn't care for any of the Karate Kids. They were fine if nothing else was on, but... not my thing. I did enjoy The Next Karate Kid with Hilary Swank, though. She was awesome, and the whole thing with the monks was kind of adorable all around.

Everytime I watch you have a reaction to something I grew up with, and thougt not a thing about it except it was funny, to watch your PC mind react.. Any time there is a woman starring in the movie "Hated it". John Malkovich is a brilliant actor; but he plays a seducer of women in that movie and, to me, that fell flat. Great Balls of Fire was a movie about Jerry Lee Lewis. He was very controversial in his day. A rock- a- billy star with tons of energy and could play the keys off of a piano.

The big 3 networks ruled the ratings back then and cable tv was mediocre at best. Fox was the young upstart network and 4th in the ratings so it was the Wild West. What no one realized was the people my age (gen x) were laughing our asses off every night.
