Gregg wrote this song when he was 17. He kept it in his back pocket because he couldn't think of a name for the girl. He knew it had to be three cilybles. He thought of Barbara but no. Then while the Allman brothers were gaining traction and living together in one big house with girl friends and wives. Gregg headed to a convenience store to pick up some basics for everyone. It was his turn to go grocery shopping. While in the store there was the clerk and a mother and her little daughter. While shopping Gregg saw this little girl running up and down the aisles being a little girl. The girls mom called out for to find her. Her name was melissa. That's how was able to finish this song.

True story.

A gypsy is a nomad. The rock and roll and blues musicians had a fondness for travelers. They traveled for their music in the bands. So they relate to the gypsy lifestyle. Melissa is the gypsy’s muse. He has a restless soul. But she is his anchor. And the freight train is blues symbol of having a restless spirit. The freight trains shows up in countless blues and rock songs, and it fits well with the gypsy theme. In America, there is a counterculture of “train riders:” These people travel the country illegally for free on freight trains. They are also often referenced in rock and blues songs, in an empathetic and poetic way. They are singing about the blues lifestyle. Blues music was born of pain and suffering in the cotton fields worked by slaves. It’s a fascinating cultural phenomenon. The Allman brothers brought old blues music from the 1920’s and 1930’s into the mainstream of 1970’s rock n roll. Some of their songs are 100 years old.

The 11th chords cycling over the verse are so lovely. He recorded this song with his brother, Duane, before The Allman Brothers Band was formed, and then rerecorded after Duane died, with Dickey Betts playing the beautiful guitar in this version.

One of my all-time favorite bands, and maybe America’s best ever!… Happy that you heard two ends of the spectrum from them, the soft and beautiful Melissa to the rocking Whipping Post… Next, you MUST listen to One Way Out (Live) from the original Fillmore East live recording. Guaranteed you will love it!

This dude hit the jackpot. Respect. As good as the Allmans were on their recordings, they were at another level as a live band. I strongly urge you to check out some of the live recordings, particularly the classic line-up. Anything from the 71 Fillmore East recordings should send you to bed happy.

Carol got this song from the very start. The ABB is perhaps the very best at drawing one into their undeniable groove and soul. The depth of emotion that went into this song is felt by those who can sense it.

The Allman Brothers Band is a band that can safely be called an under-appreciated one. Melissa is an incredible song. Their album Eat A Peach is iconic. Check out their song "Blue Sky." Will blow you away.

I saw The Allman Brothers live at an outdoor concert in May of 1979. Bonnie Raitt was the opening act. They played at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst spring concert at the football stadium. Weather was great and so was the concert. You should check out a band called The Warning. They're a power rock trio, three sisters from Mexico, and write and perform great music. I've been obsessed since I first heard one of their songs last October. Everything they do is great but if you want a specific suggestion, start with their performance of Evolve at the MTV VMA's last September.

This song brings me to tears because me and my family would get together every year and jam this is one of the songs we would pick. Its nothing better than having 6 acoustic perfectly tuned to each other and playing this song. We also did another Allman Brothers song called Jessica just an instrumental but very beautiful and satisfying to play. All my family is gone now but still have them beautiful memories 😢

Greg Allman wrote this song when he was 17. He had everything except the name. All he knew was it had to be 3 syllables. One day he was in a grocery store and a woman came in with a little girl. The girl got away from the woman and was running around hiding in the isles and the woman was wondering around the store calling out "Melissa" trying to find the girl. So when he got home he had the name he'd been looking for.

At the risk of complicating a very complicated history: you should hear some Tedeschi-Trucks band songs, and keep listening to Allman Brothers songs. Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, a founding member of the Allman Brothers. Derek was in the Allman's earlier, at a later stage of their history. Some people think he's the greatest slide guitarist ever, similar to what they thought about Duane Allman back in the day. Susan Tedeschi is as fine a blues and soul singer as there is around. Band is great, and similar to the Allmans, hard to describe. Blues, jazz, soul, modern classical, a bit of country, frankly whatever they want to play they play. And they absolutely kill it live, they're not pretenders. And historically, would advise you to hear all of Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East to help understand how great they were.

Their most beautiful, and amazing song is the Live version or "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from their Fillmore east album, from 1970..It is a 13 min. long instrumental, but don't let that deter you..You will be sad it wasn't longer. It is that incredible!..I'm 67, and the first time I saw them live I was 14. I've been a fan since..I hope you listen. Enjoy!
