For a really long time, I was very interested in rats but after researching mice I think they are a better option for me! Thank you for all the mouse and rat video you put out since they really are a pet not too many people make tons of videos on.
@TaqeeGreen

I also wanted rats for a while, but then I started researching about mice and it's better for me because I already have a 40 gallon tank from a past hamster (R.I.P. Hazelnut💔) that I can use for mice. but it isn't high enough for rats and it isn't in my budget to get another cage.
@sinandcyanide7505
@sinandcyanide7505 4 жыл бұрын
@@TaqeeGreen you wouldn't want rats in a tank anyway because it's hard on their lungs. I did find something similar to a double Critter Nation for $60 that would just need mesh added because the bar spacing is one inch so if that's in your budget, it's on Wish BUT has a lot of purchases and good reviews and a 30 day return policy with fast shipping. Just search "rat cage" or "pet cage." It should be the first result. The doors aren't as big as the Critter Nation, but the cage is. You can also pay $30 now and another $30 in 30 days so if you can make that happen, you're set 🙂

Sin and Cyanide Yeah I found a $69 cage on amazon, and all I need is a mat for the ramps as it’ll hurt there little feet’s. It’s such a lucky find as the cage is fairly big too.
@sinandcyanide7505
@sinandcyanide7505 4 жыл бұрын
@@liebling4069 that's awesome! I used silicone baking mats cut to size. They stay on pretty well without zip ties so it's super easy to clean them, the rats don't slide around on them as easily as they would on plastic placemats, and they're kind of soft so I'm sure it's more comfortable. They're not very expensive either. I also found a rubber kind of bath mat that works well for the cage bottom in one of mine, but it would likely be harder to mount on ramps because of the suction cups on the back.

Oh good! I think it could definitely work if you do decide to use it for them! It looks quite tall so the only other thing i'd say with the rat cage is maybe add something in the middle just to make sure they don't fall from the top :)

I have 3 mice: Stellaluna (black/tan), Lullaby (PEW Texel), and Nightshade (black self). I found a TON of plastic tunnels for free on the side of the road, which has allowed me to build them an elaborate set of tunnels with 5 chambers under their bedding and multiple exits/entrances. They also have a couple disconnected tunnels that lead down into their own smaller chamber. My mice use to be entirely feral, but now that I've given them the tunnel system, they're much more sociable with me and it makes me super happy!

@bratatouille
@bratatouille 5 жыл бұрын
@@katherine9616 I know. I have rats and proper ventilation is vital to them, since they are very prone to respiratory infections and produce a lot more ammonia than pretty much any other small animal. I would never keep mice, or any other animal for that matter, in a bin with just holes in the lid. I didn't say it was enough, simply that it looks like it has at least some ventilation.

I would say definitely get one, mice are super active so the more active and enriching the environment, the more your babies will thrive! Busier is better!! Re. the tub cage connected to a small critter trail cage around 11:45: what about ventilation in the tub cage? I can't see any wire at all, it looks like a completely enclosed plastic box, where the only opening is the pipe to the critter trail cage, and possibly some small holes in the lid. So where do the mice get fresh air from when they're down in the tub cage?

I really wanted to get rats but I don’t have enough space in my room so I was thinking one male mouse may be better. My local pet store sells a cage that is 50cm in length, 36.5cm in depth and 24cm tall. Do you think this will be big enough for him? I would also love to know if you think that a male mouse would be a lot of work because I am a kid and still go to school. I am able to scatter feed him if needed and bond with him in the afternoons. I had an escaped white mouse in my house. Didn't know where she came from, I hadn't had a mouse up until that point. But she decided to live here and I was like 'okay, but on my condition: in an enclosure'. Took me a month to catch her, I had a Ferplast Geo Maxi prepared for temporary because I didn't want to spend money on an enclosure while she was still running free, in case she ran outside and the money was spend for nothing. I bought a Petgard Elmo XXL (100*55*35cm, 7mm space between the bars, including a wheel, a platform and a stair) and a couple of friends. Big mistake, while I specifically asked for females I got at least one male, who murdered the other new mice and got the first mouse pregnant. 😬 Now I have 9 mice, if I have it interpret the right way 8 females and 2 males. Like 4 of them are definitely moving out as soon as they're old enough, daddy is also moving out soon. A couple of the female stay here, with their mother. 😊

I really like that you said if they have the means to do it. Too many people say you need to do it or else. And there are a lot of loving owners who cannot meet certain expectations and it makes them feel like bad caretakers. Thank you for your kind word choices

I mean realistically for their pets, if it’s below the minimum they do need to do it, but you can’t force someone to do what’s best if they don’t have the ability to. I do wish people who can’t provide the basics would avoid getting any more pets in the future, but for the ones they have now working towards a minimum sized enclosure at least is the best they can do

Hi! I have 2 female mice (I just got another one that I named Rue, after Ivy’s sister Flower passed 😔) They are currently in the meeting each other stage so they are not living together just yet. But I only have a 10 gallon tank for them. I am trying to convince my mom to let me get a 20 gallon flat but she said that a 10 is all they need. How do I convince her to let me get the bigger cage? I do have the money, but I think my moms main thing is my room is small.

Most of these stories about parents not letting their kids be responsible makes me angry. Like your kid did research and you are forcing them to be bad pet owners! But, on the other hand if you can't afford it on your own you should wait till you can.

No, rats can’t live in tanks as they don’t provide them with enough ventilation and it wouldn’t be big enough

Is a 75 X 37 glass tank ok for a singel mousse that is about hamster size when adult? I found a two week old(ish) baby mouse outside that I’ve been taking care of and I’ve decided to keep him/her because he\she has already grown attached to humans it seems. I want to give it as good of a life as I can..

What is the minimum size a mouse wheel should be? I wasn't aware a wheel that's too small can cause spine injuries... I'd love to learn more about that. My mouse's wheel is 15 cm in diameter, and 7 cm wide + frame (the frame is an additional 1 cm on each side). He also has a smaller wheel which is 12 cm in diameter, and 3.5 cm wide + frame. The small wheel is not in the cage, just an extra outside the cage that he uses sometimes but not often. (Both wheels are plastic)

I love mice and rats and I'm planning on getting a trio of mice eventually once I'm ready, but it throws me off how short their lifespans are... While most rabbits impulse bought don't live a year, I can expect a decade with my rabbits since they're cared for properly; no care I can provide can give me long with mice or rats 😭

It IS hard, I recently lost my two mice (one through cancer and one through old age), and it is really tough, and you feel the pain the same way every time you lose one, but you do become accustomed to it. The way that I have found to cope is to think about how good of a life they had. My boy mice, and the gerbils I had before them, were all rescues, and their lives would have been a lot worse had I not had them. My mice in particular were about to become snake food. But instead I homed them and they had everything they ever wanted, they were such spoilt boys! And whilst they only lived until 3 (which is already a long life for mice!), it was a rewarding life for them AND me, no matter how short our time together was 💕 So whilst it is hard, they're still worth it x

I’ve had 2 mice die while in my care, it does suck, as does any death of a pet.. But it’s also awesome knowing that you gave them the best life possible and that they lived freely in the care of someone who loved them! Even better if they live past their average lifespan! That’s when you know you’ve done something right :)

Edit: Now they're in a 30 gallon bin cage and I might add an extra bin eventually. They're definitely happier with all the running space.

I'd personally think about releasing him/her back into the wild. Being trapped inside a cage when it's used to having free range will probably be extremely stressful to them. Plus wild mice can carry some extremely dangerous diseases that can make you seriously ill.

Im not a professional, but id give them about 2-3 inches of bedding. And you should do your own research on the food so that no one gives you bad advice on it. My mice like blueberries, strawberries, they arent to fond of broccoli. The bedding you use shouldnt be scented or dusty, Aspen shavings work great. Depends on your mice, my 2 need their cage cleaned once every week. Not sure about plants/hay, but do not give them Alphalpa. They cannot digest it. Im pretty sure a wheel has to be atleast 8+ inches, i could be wrong though. I clean my mice' water everytime i clean their cage. And i would probably get them off Craigslist (as long as they didnt breed the mice) so your not supporting petstores

Good lord... poor rat! Maybe get her to watch Emi's videos on subscriber rat cages and get her to check out r/rats on reddit for examples. If she's so sure it's fine, have her make a throw away account and post a picture for feedback and she'll be in for an awakening. She can even make a bin cage really cheaply if she gets hardware cloth to mesh out the sides.
