I also wanted rats for a while, but then I started researching about mice and it's better for me because I already have a 40 gallon tank from a past hamster (R.I.P. Hazelnut💔) that I can use for mice. but it isn't high enough for rats and it isn't in my budget to get another cage.
@sinandcyanide75054 жыл бұрын
@@TaqeeGreen you wouldn't want rats in a tank anyway because it's hard on their lungs. I did find something similar to a double Critter Nation for $60 that would just need mesh added because the bar spacing is one inch so if that's in your budget, it's on Wish BUT has a lot of purchases and good reviews and a 30 day return policy with fast shipping. Just search "rat cage" or "pet cage." It should be the first result. The doors aren't as big as the Critter Nation, but the cage is. You can also pay $30 now and another $30 in 30 days so if you can make that happen, you're set 🙂
@liebling40694 жыл бұрын
Sin and Cyanide Yeah I found a $69 cage on amazon, and all I need is a mat for the ramps as it’ll hurt there little feet’s. It’s such a lucky find as the cage is fairly big too.
@sinandcyanide75054 жыл бұрын
@@liebling4069 that's awesome! I used silicone baking mats cut to size. They stay on pretty well without zip ties so it's super easy to clean them, the rats don't slide around on them as easily as they would on plastic placemats, and they're kind of soft so I'm sure it's more comfortable. They're not very expensive either. I also found a rubber kind of bath mat that works well for the cage bottom in one of mine, but it would likely be harder to mount on ramps because of the suction cups on the back.

I have 3 mice: Stellaluna (black/tan), Lullaby (PEW Texel), and Nightshade (black self). I found a TON of plastic tunnels for free on the side of the road, which has allowed me to build them an elaborate set of tunnels with 5 chambers under their bedding and multiple exits/entrances. They also have a couple disconnected tunnels that lead down into their own smaller chamber. My mice use to be entirely feral, but now that I've given them the tunnel system, they're much more sociable with me and it makes me super happy!

@@katherine9616 I know. I have rats and proper ventilation is vital to them, since they are very prone to respiratory infections and produce a lot more ammonia than pretty much any other small animal. But she decided to live here and I was like 'okay, but on my condition: in an enclosure'. Took me a month to catch her, I had a Ferplast Geo Maxi prepared for temporary because I didn't want to spend money on an enclosure while she was still running free, in case she ran outside and the money was spend for nothing. I bought a Petgard Elmo XXL (100*55*35cm, 7mm space between the bars, including a wheel, a platform and a stair) and a couple of friends. Big mistake, while I specifically asked for females I got at least one male, who murdered the other new mice and got the first mouse pregnant. 😬 Now I have 9 mice, if I have it interpret the right way 8 females and 2 males. Like 4 of them are definitely moving out as soon as they're old enough, daddy is also moving out soon. A couple of the female stay here, with their mother. 😊

I love mice and rats and I'm planning on getting a trio of mice eventually once I'm ready, but it throws me off how short their lifespans are... While most rabbits impulse bought don't live a year, I can expect a decade with my rabbits since they're cared for properly; no care I can provide can give me long with mice or rats 😭
@thequeerbee20265 жыл бұрын
That's literally the only thing putting me off. my rabbit lived until he was 11 and it still wasn't enough time. And my other rabbit is currently 10 :-)

It IS hard, I recently lost my two mice (one through cancer and one through old age), and it is really tough, and you feel the pain the same way every time you lose one, but you do become accustomed to it. The way that I have found to cope is to think about how good of a life they had. My boy mice, and the gerbils I had before them, were all rescues, and their lives would have been a lot worse had I not had them. My mice in particular were about to become snake food. But instead I homed them and they had everything they ever wanted, they were such spoilt boys! And whilst they only lived until 3 (which is already a long life for mice!), it was a rewarding life for them AND me, no matter how short our time together was 💕 So whilst it is hard, they're still worth it x

I’ve had 2 mice die while in my care, it does suck, as does any death of a pet.. But it’s also awesome knowing that you gave them the best life possible and that they lived freely in the care of someone who loved them! Even better if they live past their average lifespan! That’s when you know you’ve done something right :)

I definitely want to do this eventually! But rn my boy is in a 10 gallon and I can’t really do much until I get him a bigger enclosure! 10 gallon really sucks and I don’t see how anyone could possibly put multiple mice in there comfortably

My girls are 5 weeks old and in a 15 gallon. I plan on giving them an upgrade this Christmas, so I'm binging a bunch of these videos so I can give them a great new forever home! Edit: Now they're in a 30 gallon bin cage and I might add an extra bin eventually. They're definitely happier with all the running space.

Is lettuce safe for mice? Also my mouse chews the bars of his cage. Is it because he's stressed it because he just wants attention?
@Emiology4 жыл бұрын
Iceberg lettuce should be avoided because it’s too watery, but romaine lettuce should be fine!

This makes me feel bad about my cage. I have one mouse I don't know its gender cause it was wild and I saved it from a trash can that it would have frozen in I'm not allowed to have him so I have him in a 10 gallon tank ( I know it's kinda small but google said it should be ok) everything is homemade and he is very shy do you have any advice?
@carsynowens21654 жыл бұрын
I kept referring to it as a him but idk the gender
@Billybeth4 жыл бұрын
I'd personally think about releasing him/her back into the wild. Being trapped inside a cage when it's used to having free range will probably be extremely stressful to them. Plus wild mice can carry some extremely dangerous diseases that can make you seriously ill.

I have a 280 square inch cage and am interested in getting a mouse. Would this be enough for one male mouse?

Probably but still quite small

Hey! I know you may not see this, but I just got my first mouse. He’s a small male (not very old). I was just wondering if it was okay to have a smaller cage for 1 mouse or if I should get a big one. I am currently using a bin cage with lots of ventilation for air, I’m not entirely sure how big it is, but I would love feedback from you or anybody in the comments!

@ittoscrustysock75344 жыл бұрын
Im not a professional, but id give them about 2-3 inches of bedding. And you should do your own research on the food so that no one gives you bad advice on it. My mice like blueberries, strawberries, they arent to fond of broccoli. The bedding you use shouldnt be scented or dusty, Aspen shavings work great. Depends on your mice, my 2 need their cage cleaned once every week. Not sure about plants/hay, but do not give them Alphalpa. They cannot digest it. Im pretty sure a wheel has to be atleast 8+ inches, i could be wrong though. I clean my mice' water everytime i clean their cage. And i would probably get them off Craigslist (as long as they didnt breed the mice) so your not supporting petstores
@asbyce50714 жыл бұрын
@@ittoscrustysock7534 thank you! i'm getting them in 3 days off of craigslist. i have a 12 inch wheel, aspen bedding, which i'll put 4 inches to be safe.

Hi I was wondering I’m about to be a new mice owner and I haven’t seen people like to video on this before but am I able to use straw as a betting I’m doing as much research as I can because I wanna get my mice to live amazing lives as best of my ability I was just a question I just thought of it so if you could answer I would absolutely love to know thank you
@Emiology3 жыл бұрын
You can use dust extracted straw and hay as nesting material or enrichment but not as the only main bedding as it’s not absorbent enough to soak up pee and will quickly start to stink

Send her all the resources that say why it’s bad that it’s alone in a tiny cage
@sinandcyanide75054 жыл бұрын
Good lord... poor rat! Maybe get her to watch Emi's videos on subscriber rat cages and get her to check out r/rats on reddit for examples. If she's so sure it's fine, have her make a throw away account and post a picture for feedback and she'll be in for an awakening. She can even make a bin cage really cheaply if she gets hardware cloth to mesh out the sides.
