Beto Ramos is a double Latin Grammy nominated drummer, having his own group called Jumbo. He is Pau's drum mentor and recently been involved with production of the band's music including More. He oversaw the audio engineering of this concert at Teatro as far as I remember. Previously he used to be the drummer of the band, Los Klaxons, whose founder & bassist, Pablo González Sarre, had been The Warning's music mentor & Ale's bass teacher for the past decade. It was Pablo who got the girls into writing their own songs. In this concert at Teatro on 29th August 2022, the girls paid homage to their mentors & teachers. Beto in Narcisista & Pablo in 23 with his 6 string bass. Unfortunately due to technical problems at the start of the song The Warning included 23 from the previous show on 26th August. So we don't get to see Pablo in the concert officially released by the band.

Yup. Nailed it. It was some media/reporter types criticizing them for writing in English. The lesson is don’t piss of Pau or you’ll be immortalized for eternity in a The Warning song. There is a video from when they debuted Queen of the Murder Scene for the press That you can hear one of them asking about only writing in English. I don’t know if that’s where the song was born but that’s what I attribute it to.

Narcisista and Martirio inspired me to learn Spanish, so if anything The Warning are great ambassadors of Mexican culture to the world. They also show that it doesn't matter what language you speak or where you are in the world doesn't really matter if the music you make reaches people's hearts. As Dany puts it, I think in their TED talk, or maybe it was the tidal rising video, "Music is the language!"

I think the criticism as malanchistas has probably died down quite a bit as they have become more famous, and always remind people that they are proudly Mexican. It’s actually remarkable how many of their fans in Mexico now know and sing along with their songs in English. Fun fact: Pau originally wrote the lyrics in English, but when she tried to translate them to Spanish, her mother said they didn’t make sense, so her mother actually helped with the Spanish grammar. I guess that shows how difficult it is to write rock lyrics in Spanish. 😎👍

Its got more to do with their familiarity with Spanish & English. I think Liceo de Monterrey has English as the 1st language & Spanish as 2nd. So students will have more proficiency & deeper understanding of the former although outside the school they will be using the latter most of the time because it is their "native language".

Apparently, during this performance... while Dany and Ale knew Beto would play and Pau would sing on stage... they had absolutely no idea where and how she would move. As I gather, Dany was worried about clocking Pau with her guitar neck while they moved about on stage, because Paulina was being her usual completely chaotic self. 😋 You got the point of the song exactly. In interviews, they stated it's *much* easier to write in English than in Spanish, so it seems they do English music primarily for a couple reasons: First, it's a more flexible language in terms of grammar and is rife with synonyms to chose from to make matching rhymes, and second it's basically "the international language" - so if you want to reach the largest number of people in the largest number of countries and cultures, you do it in English. This, of course, has nothing to do with "worshiping foreign cultures" or kissing up to anybody. As you note, they grew up learning English in "immersion" bilingual schools, and listening to concerts by artists who wrote in English... no matter where they were from. _The Scorpions_ are German, yet you don't hear much about Germans giving them a hard time for producing the majority of their tunes in English!! The whole media kerfuffle pissed young Paulina off, and so we get our first lesson in "Don't piss Pau off... or she'll write a song about you." 🤘😈🤘

The Scorpions initially didn't get much mileage in Germany though. It was only after the Berlin wall fell & they wrote Wind of Change that the Germans woke up. The Warning are going through a similar phase in Mexico. Writing in a language depends on how familiar a person is. I think Liceo de Monterrey has English as the 1st language & Spanish as 2nd. So students will have more proficiency & deeper understanding of the former although outside the school they will be using the latter most of the time because it is their "native language".

This song was an answer to their critics who complained that they only did songs in English. The guest drummer is Beto Ramos, Pau’s drum teacher. He also mixed the audio for this concert. He is also the drummer for the band Jumbo. TW did not come from humble roots. Their father is a civil engineer/music producer and their mom is a dentist. Both gave up their careers to support their daughters.

Pau is perfectly capable of singing this from the drums; they only have someone stand in on special occasions. Arejay Hale did so a couple of times, and even emulated her contemptuous gesticulations (yes, she can play, sing, and essentially flip someone off all at once). When both bands were on tour with The Pretty Reckless and Lilith Czar last year, Arejay described her as the most insane drummer on the tour. BTW, in early 2020, Jay de la Cueva, a Mexican multi-instrumentalist, played guitar on this song. With two lead guitars, it had a distinct Iron Maiden feel. He played a wild solo following Dany's, and they had a blast on stage. About a week later, they were opening for Jay's band (Moderatto) in Mexico, and they joined forces for one of Moderatto's songs, and Pau fronted the combined band. You *absolutely* nailed the interpretation the first time. Spanish speakers get it the first time (particularly if they're from Mexico), and most non-speakers of Spanish read the English lyrics and get the general idea, but you went a lot further into the interpretation and got it in detail. Nicely done. For this extra-special concert, they also had Pliego Villarreal, a bassist from Monterrey (but no actual relation) play the second guitar part on Revenant, and Ale's long-time bass teacher and band mentor played alongside Ale on 23, although he only did so in the August 26 concert, and this recording is from the August 29 concert. They did blend some of the video, but not the audio. There are minor imperfections from time to time in the concert, but they didn't attempt to fix them by patching in corrected audio, which is to their credit. About that, I like to quote Beethoven, to wit that playing a wrong note is of no consequence, but to play without passion is inexcusable.

Rock music, first of all, grew out of American Blues, which was far from “white man’s music”. But it did hit home to so many young people all over the world, that rock’n’roll music, like all music, quickly belonged to everyone. Ask the bands of the so-called British Rock Invasion (The Beatles or the Rolling Stones, for example) who their early influences were. The old Blues guys are always on the top of the list.
@MrSudeepdas
@MrSudeepdas 7 ай бұрын
As Muddy Waters said "The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock And Roll". However, rock initially started with Anglo-Saxon base while the Blues remained with the African-Americans. Later rock spread all over the globe as did blues. Jimi Hendrix in rock & Eric Clapton in blues are famous crossovers. Some Mexicans are annoyed by the fact that the girls are singing in language of the "gringoes" allegedly to widen their fanbase. Its their international recognition which ruffled a few feathers in Mexico. So The Warning had to fight against - being the wrong gender in rock - being children when they started - being "white Mexicans" - being born rich - being "regiomontanas" or from Monterrey in the mountainous region in North-East of Mexico

A little more history on the word Malinchista. It’s a word with an amazing history, and used almost exclusively in Mexico. It basically refers to someone who prefers a culture different than their own, or more extremely, a cultural traitor. The word comes from the name “Malinche”. She was an indigenous woman who, through her language skills, assisted the Conquistador, Hernan Cortes, defeat Montezuma and the Aztec Empire. She was initially his interpreter, but eventually became his wife and mother of his children. Although Malinche was not Aztec ( in fact the Aztecs were the enemies of her people). For her collaboration with Cortes, her name has taken on its current meaning.
@TheUnderdogDe
@TheUnderdogDe 7 ай бұрын
So basically, people called Malinche a traitor because she learned Spanish and married a Spanish man. Now you get called a traitor if you *DON'T* sing in Spanish? Could someone explain to a stupid foreigner like me? 🤨🤔
@ednivi
@ednivi 5 ай бұрын
@@TheUnderdogDea few of the Mexican critics of TW focused their critic of the group for writing their songs in English and not in Spanish. Obviously TW took care of them with writing their first song in Spanish dedicated to ridicule them. It is interesting to note that Pau used the term MALINCHISTA thinking it was a common word used in all countries speaking Spanish. Later she realized this is a term that was only known and used in Mexico, therefore if we want to attribute one more good thing to them is that they now made this term known in other Spanish speaking countries in the world.
@TheUnderdogDe
@TheUnderdogDe 5 ай бұрын
@@ednivi Yes, I'm aware of the reason for the lyrics but I can't understand why someone who doesn't use Spanish in their lyrics would be called Malinchista. Malinche was considered a traitor to their country BECAUSE she learned how to speak Spanish and used that knowledge to translate Aztec and other languages into Spanish so Cortez ( _the invader_ ) could understand. It simply does not make any sense? Instead, ALL people who speak or sing in Spanish should be called Malinchistas.
@ednivi
@ednivi 5 ай бұрын
@@TheUnderdogDe I understand your perspective, but consider that 530 years after the conquest, Spanish is now the official or main language spoken throughout Mexico (although hundreds of dialects still exist and are used throughout the country). These few critics of The Warning argued that, by writing all their songs in English up to that point, the band members were Malinchistas or even arrogant. It's akin to if a Mexican living in Mexico prefers eating hamburgers or pizza over tacos; he would be called a Malinchista. While not necessarily a traitor, it implies someone who favors foreign things over Mexican ones. The term 'Malinchista' is also used to describe someone who thinks they are better than others because they prefer to eat, dress, and travel to places outside of Mexico, showing off in the process (arrogant). This implies they have more money or believe they know better because they can afford such preferences. It's an extreme viewpoint, but now you can understand why responding with 'Narcisista' was an effective way to address these individuals.

Brilliant!!! Absolutely brilliant!!! Probably the first reactor to decode Narcisista on the 1st attempt. An intellectual band like The Warning requires more intelligent reactors like you. Here are my thoughts posted a long time back. It has reference to the premiere of Narcisista in 2019 with Pau throwing in some theatrics to emphasize certain phrases in the song. "A kind soul has put subtitles to the debut of Narcisista at Foro Didi in June 2019 for those of us who don't speak Spanish. All my observations are with respect to this premiere. The translation explains Pau's single handed theatrics during certain verses of the song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHLcZYWnnbZ1Zqs&ab_channel=RandomMusic%40TheWarning How many 16 year olds has the guts to stand up to her critics & tell them to shut up instead of cowering away? Fed up with constant barrage from a section of the Mexican press about why they only sing in English, Pau wrote this acerbic riposte. The girls then presented the 1st draft to their mom for grammatical check in Spanish. Legend has it that Mony asked them to tone down the vitriol as she was afraid of the backlash her daughters might receive. However you can see the viciousness in Pau's presentation when The Warning debuted Narcisista at Foro in 2019 - aged 19, 17 & 14. You can see how they displayed the lyrics on a screen to vent their anger. You can see how Pau used her left hand to gesticulate theatrically to emphasise "Porque tú, no sabes nada Because you don't know anything Corres la voz y no te callas You run your mouth and don't shut up Me tapo los oídos y simplemente digo I cover my ears and just say" Cherry on the cake is when she rubs it in with "No soy loca ni Malinchista" or Neither am I mad nor Malinchista. Malinche was an Aztec (Nahua) woman who helped the Spanish conquerors in taking control of Mexico some 5 centuries back. Hence the term Malinchista for a woman who prefers foreign people, culture, goods, etc. over her own roots. A cultural turncoat if you like. Ahh...the delicious irony of time when on 16th June 2023 some 500 Spaniards joined Pau & her sisters to sing Narcisista and exactly those words for the 1st time in Madrid. The conquered have become the conqueror now." Looking forward to more reactions from you on The Warning. All the best from Kolkata, India.

Did the haters say the same about Nightwish, Epica, Maneskin, Milky Chance, Bjork, or Of Monsters and Men?

Hello. I am form Mexico. I think that criticism does apply, when, at first, you do not sing in your mother tongue and you did it for your compatriots, who, in turn, do not have that mother tongue either. Regards.

My God! You think Pau has a great voice and you haven't even heard her sing Survive, Dust to Dust, and especially 23 and Breathe. She's every bit as good a singer as Dany but she's better on a different sort of song. Looks like you are at the start of what will be a very very long journey that will bring a lot KZbin surfers to your channel.
