Long ago I actually had an audio book on cassette of Leonard Rossiter reading A Christmas Carol. He did it beautifully.

I think this is one of the best sitcom Christmas specials. The lovely Elizabeth Adare played Lucy. She is probably best known for her role as Elizabeth M'Bondo in the 70s children's sci-fi series The Tomorrow People, a must watch for me when growing up.

Brenda was brought in as a temporary regular for the second half of series two because Frances De La Tour was unavailable for filming. It was always intended that she would return for series 3. It was an interesting move as she is a totally different character and they turned a problem in an opportunity for some different story lines. It also shows that however strong the other three main characters are, its Rigsby and the writing that makes it great. Indeed that was proved for the final series when Richard Beckinsale decided to leave the show to focus on dramatic roles. Then they didn't replace him at all, and it still worked.

I loved your reaction. I haven't seen Rising damp since it was first on telly back in the 70s. Some of the content here would be frowned on these days but it was just light hearted good fun. Best laugh I've had for ages.

The actress playing the postwoman is Helen Fraser. She played one of Billy Liar's two fiancees in the 1963 movie 'Billy Liar.' Leonard Rossiter was also in this movie as Billy's boss, Emmanuel Shadrack. Rodney Bewes had a cameo role in the movie as Billy's mate, Arthur Crabtree. Rodney Bewes is most famous for playing Bob in the comedy series 'The Likely Lads' written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais who were also the writers behind 'Porridge.'

I love Billy liar and I have the dvds of the likely lads and whatever happened to the likely lads . Leonard Rossiter was an amazing comedy actor.

Leonard Rossiter also starred in "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin". Saw it on US tv, maybe in the early 1980s. Strange as it sounds. That simple but very funny show had a big effect on my life.

As you say, Rigsby would have been a natural for Scrooge, which, funnily enough, was a part Leonard Rossiter played in a touring production of "A Christmas Carol" in 1975.

Haha! I knew you would feel sorry for Rigsby eventually. I'll bet you never expected to. I am sure a few other people have mentioned the 2 Porridge Christmas specials by the way. The first one is my favourite "No Way Out", that's from 1975 as well. Hope you can find it. I'd love to see you react to it if possible. Have a great Christmas!
