The fact that that one lady is being named as the Archduchess of Austria is really interesting to me, because there has been no such thing since 1919. If she calls herself that, she's not even allowed to cross into Austria. About Angelina Jordan. She won "Norway's got talent" at age seven, singing old jazz Billie Holiday style such musicality and feeling, she was an instant star. At age 12, she was invited to perform (among many other events) at Quincy Jones 85th birthday celebration at the London O2. Pretty cool, huh? She writes a lot of her own music and is reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. She is perhaps the only one of all of the debs who is not really a nepo baby, but does come from a family of artists. As for fashion, she often performs in retro outfits with 50's, 60's feel.

Growing up in the South, Debutante Balls were and still are a staple in the monied classes. The worst thing I ever commented on was to a customer about how antiquated the practice was. I likened it to a cattle call, parading the girls around like a bunch of virgins, with the parents looking towards a good merger of money than a good marriage. The ball has been moved from Spring break to Thanksgiving Friday because the girls would have rather gone to the beaches, which meant that I had to work on Thanksgiving Day and that wasn't sitting well with me all on its own. The mom sorta agreed, but the only thing that the dad heard was that I said that his daughter wasn't a virgin. Shoe fit, I think.

And done a dramatic eye (something whimsical). Elizabeth of S.C. YOU GO GIRL WITH YOUR WORK AND CUTE DRESS!!!! Love that for her. Youd think Reese Witherspoon with her feminist branding wouldnt go anywhere near a debutante ball.. like girl thats for marrying off inexperienced girls to your rich friends wtf lol

I love it when designers use Catholic artwork and religion as an inspiration for fashion (i'm catholic btw). Dolce and Gabanna are catholics and they use their religion as an inspiration for some of the most beautiful pieces.

I was a debutant, not at this level, and where we did it, it was a year of charity work, team building and learning about our community which was really a great tool for 16 year olds to get out of their comfort zone and be dynamic and a part of something bigger than themselves. Yes, we had a ball but it was just a school dance, and there was none of the being presented to society. It was more a recognition of our hard work and diligence for the year. We really did a lot for our community, and the school and debs continue to do so.

@@avr7120 I do, and you can. Most people don't. And it's a great way to get young girls into charity work in a safe way especially in a country that was not walkable and did not have reliable public transport. I mean you can teach your kids at home too most likely, most don't and choose to enroll them for programs called school. You get recognition at school too when you achieve well, should that be stopped?

Luke, thanks for this. I first heard of these balls about 30 years ago when they were covered in Town and Country magazine. I think the magazine covers the ball each year. The debs have always worn high fashion gowns, although as you say, the very rich often have very bad taste. But that is changing nowadays with the younger set, but not quickly enough as we can see from some of the gowns!

It is difficult to roast this age group (assuming teens or early 20's?), but I think that Luke did it properly. He just commented on the dress. Well, yes money was mentioned several times, but it sounds like the majority of the participants had extremely well-connected and wealthy ancestors (aka parents and grandparents). I love galas! Some participants get it on-point, some get it average and well some try very very intensely so A for their effort.😉

What I love about Luke is that he explains why certain looks weren’t exactly a hit and what could have been done to make it better. Is so easy to tear people apart but is way harder to give proper reasoning and an educated suggestion.

I would love to have a moment in which you discuss the couture options of the escorts. As escorts they are meant to blend into the background and I notice they have a rather structured and formal way of presenting themselves. I would like to hear about how they display their own uniqueness within that very narrow range of options. I thought the lovely man in the kilt with the fishes did a spectacular job of breaking away from the mundane. Also I am a HUGE fan of masculine pulchritude.

These balls never really went away for the upper middle class and upper class United States, especially in the South these are a big deal. There are two in my town. I don’t think they’re really for finding husbands anymore, because nowadays that what sororities are for (at least for some people). But the tradition remains.

Oh hard disagree on the Carolina Herrera dress. The colors look like you threw a funeral shroud on top of a baby shower cupcake. Or that your fancy black dress got caught in an escalator and ripped away revealing the 3 mismatched petticoats you wore underneath.

The great thing about the arts, is that you can form your own opinions. Fashion is art and art is subjective. So when you like something and you know why; that's all you need! Form your own opinions, your own preferences. So what if a youtuber doesn't agree with your taste? By all means: learn what you want to know about fashion but never forget that you form your OWN opinions and those may or may not align with other people. Explore, experiment and find your own tastes and be confident.

21:59 This nepo baby was definitely the It girl, but she also looks dead inside in _every_ photo and video. She's giving off the vibe of someone who is so spoilt that nothing is fun or exciting any more and she's far too young for that. I am not saying that I am correct, but that is the message I'm getting. I don't watch these videos to tear into people. I like fabulous fashion and love to be inspired, but this girl's demeanor is screaming to me that something is very very wrong here. This is someone I would trip over chairs to avoid when I was that age.

Just so you know a little more about Angelina Jordan, Yes she won Norway"s Got Talent when she was 8 years old but her winnings she donated to a children's charity as well as raising 21 million Euro for other children's charities she is also the youngest published author in Norway when she was 9 years old. it is the story of when she was 6 years old, meeting a young homeless girl in the Middle East who had no shoes, she gave her her favorite shoes she was wearing and sparked her interest in raising money for children's charities. And yes she is an amazing singer. She would have been much more famous but her parents wanted her to have a somewhat normal childhood, turning down Disney, and many others who wanted to sign her to a contract. Her parents would let her sing at charities, and some summer concerts. Nora Jones had her open a concert for her to 40 thousand fans, Quincy Jones had her sing "Fly Me To The Moon" this 85th Birthday gala. She has been signed by Republic Records at 14 but they promised not to promote her till she turns 18 which is next month January 10th. They have built Angelina her own studio in LA.

Fun facts: the most famous member of the Empirikos ship owning family was actually... a surrealist poet! (one of the first in Greece, Andreas Empirikos). Really surreal! They were hosting the late king Konstantinos in their private island ages before Onassis bought his own, Skorpios (don't get me wrong, I am as democrat as Kleisthenis). Cilia Kritharioti is also married to a ship owner, Tsakos. Greetings from Greece, keep up the roasting, we love it!

Its customary that debs borrow the dresses and possibly also the bijoux. I attended Le Bal's 1998 edition as a guest, not a debutante, and the crowd was old money which means everyone was unassuming, unpretentious and simply enjoying a lovely, civilized soirée.

Charity, she donated the 80,000 dollars she won on Norway’s Got Talent Angelina Jordan won Norway’s Got Talent at the age of 8 in 2014, the prize for winning was eighty thousand dollars, this money was donated to children’s charities. At age 8 her first charity performance was in Germany to raise money for heart disease. Again, at age 8 she does a telethon for Plan International Children’s Charity. Still at age 8 she performs for Norwegian Sea Rescue Society Charity. On the 12th of Dec still at age 8, she performs at Save The Child Nobel Peace Prize, 4 days later, even though she has a very bad cold, she performs for the Swedish Heroes Foundation against her doctor's orders. At age 10 she performed for the Norwegian Refugee Council Charity. Also age 10 she performed in Seoul in South Korea for Rotary International to raise money for children’s vaccinations. Angelina Jordan comes from a very wealthy family and does need the money, she, and her family want to share her wonderful talent with the world. This is what makes AJ and her family so very special.
