Any other classic episodes you would like me to react to?
It was quite a strange experience watching this episode. An Unearthly Child defintiely took me by suprise.
So glad this exists. Thank you Mr. Hartnell and Team for getting this started!

The doctor was the scariest thing in the first few serials. It wasn't until the end of "The Edge of Destruction" that he became the character we all know today. I love season 1, and would recommend it to anyone

In my opinion these early episodes knock the socks off of ANY of the new Doctor Whos, which are ruined by too many snazzy special effects and FAR too much intrusive music. I've watched Dr Who since it was first broadcast, and I'd watch the classics anytime over the new ones

Hello! I bought a DVD boxed set of the First Doctor as a Christmas gift for my brother. First, we viewed the episode, "Pilot", that was numbered as, Zero. Then we viewed "Episode One: An Unearthly Child". Episode 0, gave us the year that Susan Ford and her grandfather are from! That was to explain their higher technology. But with Episode 1, being from the Planet Gallifrey, sufficed as enough of an explanation.

Notes: The movie, "Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang", has scenes in it that are homages to, "Doctor Who". 😎 Actor Peter Cushing, played "Doctor Who", in at least two theatrical movies. Susan, was younger. There were other children too. 😎 The Daleks were the foes.

The first episode was way better than I anticipated. I thought that it maybe tool old Doctor Who a season or 2 to get good, but obviously it started with a bang! I shouldn't be surprised because New Doctor Who seasons start off fantastically as well. I'm so glad Unearthly child laid the ground work for Doctor Who so well, the TARDIS noises, and even landing on a planet with the stowaway teachers (like so many stowaways in New Who) and giving us that anticipation for the next episode. Thank you for posting, I really enjoyed this rift along with you ( :

Great reaction Crispy Pro! Most Doctor Who reaction videos are for 'New Who'. Some are fun to see as they help you re-live and feel epic moments through the emotional responses of others. Sadly there isn't many reaction videos to 'Classic Who', which I grew up with having the some of the same reactions as people now are having to new who. There are a few but it's not a real first reaction unfortunately because some of the people doing reactions to classic who have already seen the story and in some cases know the script as they quote it before the actors, so I don't see how it can be a true reaction when they know what's coming! It's refreshing to see you reacting Crispy because you've not seen classic who. Your reactions are real emotions and excitement making it fun to watch and remind classic fans of their initial reactions upon seeing these scenes for the first time as you are now. I'd like to see you react to The 2/3/5 doctors, the McGann movie, Green Death with giant maggots, Planet of the Daleks where the Daleks have whole scenes without humans and are being ruthless plotting, Earthshock with the big reveal of a classic villan (don't look into it but let your friends set it up for you and just watch see if you can work it out), the Mind Robber, Trial of a Timelord episode 13 cliffhanger and those from the deadly assassin. Mark of the Rani (wait till you see her TARDIS). Silver Nemesis 25th anniversary story, or the cliffhanger to episode 1 of remembrance of the Daleks. Maybe even the first classic spin off K9 and company. The Who addicts could just set you up with a classic story, tell you nothing about it and get a true, raw reaction. Keep em real Crispy.

Although I watched Doctor Who in the Tom Baker era, I didn’t see any other Who until nuWho. I went back and watched this ep, then other classic eps. What got me is how consistent the Doctors character is. Even though he’s different (and developed some morality as time went on), he’s still clearly the same character. He can be obstinate, wacky, funny, frightening, and easily distracted and easily intrigued. Every doctor was different yet the same. I found the FX to be quite good initially, when they knew they were filming on a TV set. Later, when they tried to do more on a limited budget the FX got absurd. But in the very early days it was amazing what they did with so little

The first Doctor's farewell speech to Susan, "One day, I'll be back --yes! I'll be back!" is very classic, and has been used in anniversary specials etc. With the actress who played Susan still with us, I hope sometime the latest Doctor can fulfil that promise. For him, it's been many regenerations. For her, it's been 50 years. Time travellers can do that. He apologises for the five decades. But she laughs and says Gradfather, you visited me many times after this one, but from your point of view, those visits havent happened yet (wibbly wobbly). But he is there because it's near the end of Susan's life, the story ending with Susan's first regeneration.....a very unearthly child.....!

You mentioned that it looks as though these were filmed hand held. The truth is that in those days, the cameras were huge, and Studio D at Lime Grove was tiny - long and narrow. So, what actually happened is that the cameras kept bumping against the props
@Paulious78
@Paulious78 3 жыл бұрын
The way they set the stories back then (& a lot now) was generally one in the past, one in the future. 1 an unearthly child / 10,000 b.c. (past) 2 the daleks (future) 3 edge of destruction (this was put in as a filler. I'm not sure if the daleks ran short or the following story wasn't finished) 4 Marco Polo (past) 5 keys of marinus (future) 6 The aztecs (past) 7 the sensorites (future) 8 the reign of terror (past) 9 planet of giants (present day-ish) 10 daleks invasion of earth (future) This tends to change when 3rd Doctor takes over, as he has been exiled to earth and while the TARDIS is "broken" he can't travel through space.

I watched this for the first time back in the late 70s when it first aired in the states. I was an adult, but I loved it and watched every episode through about the 8th Doctor. After that the show became a bit too silly for my tastes. We never had any of the 2nd Doctor’s episodes to watch except for the crossover series of the Three Doctors. The classic series were my favorite. Thanks for showing this.

I have a tremendous fondness for this episode. I actually like the whole story, despite its wonkiness and oddities. Actually, some very good performances in there: Eileen Way (Old Mother), for instance, and Alethea Charlton (Hur), and a rather complex performance by Derek Newark (Za)... each of whom were to return to Doctor Who at other times -- Way with "Meglos" (Tom Baker), once again with Jacqueline Hill; Charlton in "The Time Meddler" (the last story of Hartnell's second season); Newark in "Inferno" (Jon Pertwee). And yes, from the very beginning the template was there; the die was cast, and the character -- and much of the feel of the show -- was established, in no small part due to Hartnell, but also to Verity Lambert and Waris Hussein. It's a pity we don't have any footage of the Marco Polo story, also directed by Hussein -- a rather good story, with some very fine moments, as one can tell from some of the reconstructions, or listening to the audio... but it would be very interesting to compare the two and Hussein's direction. Above all... the magic was there, from the very beginning. To my mind, even with some wobbles along the way, it has never really left, and there is an assured thread of continuity which has run through the program to this day....

I don't think it's necessary to watch entire stories to get a feel for classic Who, but some Hartnell stories are quite fun and worth watching all the way through: The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Romans, The Crusade and The Time Meddler spring to mind. Individual episodes that are worth seeing include the first episode of The Web Planet and and part one of The Space Museum, but you would be well-advised to skip the rest of the episodes in those stories (In classic Who, episodes refer to individual twenty-five minute instalments, rather than whole stories.) Personally, I think the three episodes of Planet of Giants are fun, but I don't think they work for most people. Also, I think the rest of the first Dalek story is pretty good, although, at that point, Barbara hasn't yet become the heroic character she will later prove to be.

The story "an unearthly child" generally refers to the first 4 episodes. It's quite a bit slower paced than you're used to.

yes I watched them al in one go, many times actually. I really do love that episode. considering it was on really low budget at the time, they made it look so amazing and surreal. really introduces the show well. shame We can't go back in time and bring the actor of Susan to now and put her in a modern episode.

I know it's been over a year, but if you're going to react to anything (especially since you've seen Unearthly Child), do yourself a favour and react to Remembrance of the Daleks. Despite its general popularity and acclaim, there's literally only 1-2 people out there who've reacted to it in any way, which is a shame for such an action-packed episode where the Dalek's get to go on a massive rampage in their last (and best) story of classic Who.

An Unearthly Child is my favourit Dr. Who epsiode of all time. The following three episodes in that story is pretty rubbish, but the first one is so great. If I were to recommend two more storyarchs to watch with the first doctor, I'd say go for The Romans and The Time Meddler. Both are great.

Back when I first saw the first story, I would have agreed with you. However, over the years, watching it over again, I find the following three very odd, but -- despite some rather risible moments -- actually they have grown on me considerably. Some of the performances are really quite good, and much of the cinematography is very fine, quite atmospheric. The main problem is a few of the special effects, and the concept being rather difficult to pull off... yet, withal, they did rather well, in my opinion. I realize this is a story which tends to polarize people quite a bit, but speaking for myself, my own opinion of it has risen a lot with each viewing....
