The sound was done by Delia Derbyshire with the BBC Radiophonic Orchestra, it was really pioneering sound design. The tardis sound effect is a key being scraped across an amplified piano wire, a lot of the stuff especially the theme tune is early use of synthesis, really incredible stuff for the time.
@peterknight38515 жыл бұрын
Also I think the time vortex effect was an accident when they shined a stage light into one of the cameras
@johna56355 жыл бұрын
To understand quite how ground-breaking Delia Derbyshire's work was you need to listen to it in the context of the pop music of the day when 'progressive' groups like The Beatles were recording relatively simple songs like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"... when Brian Wilson made [very] similar use of a theremin for the hook on "Good Vibrations" THREE years later even that was considered ground-breaking!

A Police Box was a normal thing to see in London in 1963. But it was on street corners. Used by the Metropolitan Police to hold suspects or as a radio relay.
@MrPaulMorris5 жыл бұрын
This was before the introduction of personal radios; the box housed a telephone that officers (or the public) could use to contact their station. The station could also contact the patrolling officers--the light on top flashed when they were to call. The box itself was used as a shelter, to complete reports, for the officers to take a break (remembering that they were on foot and could be some distance from the station) and as a temporary jail to hold prisoners until they could be collected by a vehicle. Many also held first aid equipment (hence the St John Ambulance sign on the door). Contrary to what is said from time to time in Who, the boxes weren't made of wood but rather constructed of concrete, other than the doors, although they may have had an impressed wood grain from the shuttering used in casting the sections.
@tommcewan79365 жыл бұрын
The British version of the police box (it was actually an American invention) was basically a miniature police station, which made it cheaper to have more of them, and easy to put them wherever they were needed. At the time, police cars were expensive and crap, radios were expensive as hell, even more crap and really big and heavy, computers were inconceivably expensive, unbelievably crap (by modern standards) and the size and weight of a small building (plus most people barely knew what a computer even was, and would practically have needed a mathematics degree to operate one) and the internet didn't even exist, so the only way to have an effective police force was to simply have more policemen spread all over the place, and always within walking (or sprinting) distance of a base of operations with a hard-wired telephone. I think a few countries, possibly Japan for example, still use something a bit like them in certain places.

I saw it on first release back in 1963. It is easier to watch full length. The many bits cut out reduces the tension. It was wonderfully shot, and of course the first Doctor was always the most interesting, he was so multilayered with a dark side, and a good touch of the mad scientist about him. I seem to remember that the first episode was repeated before the 2nd was shown. It caused such a sensation, and so many people who missed it demanded it be repeated. And it seemed everybody wanted to know what that shadow was. The music was like nothing else ever heard at the time, and the TARDIS wheezing was extraordinary. And so much of the Doctor was utterly mysterious. In the first episode we learned key concepts, the extra dimensions inside and that it was Susan who named the TARDIS. In the first couple of minutes of the2nd episode we learn that the Police Box was a camouflage, that should be different at every destination, but that something is wrong with the TARDIS and it is stuck on the Police box. It quickly became a big hit, and Hartnell was the one responsible for developing so many of the quirky things that later Doctors would inherit.

since you already seen an *adventure in time and space*, this was pointed out to before, the version you reacting to is the episode before they reshot it, you can tell because of the way the doctor is talking, and in the background one of the walls inside the tardis wasnt made so they just used a painted wall but after the reshoot they had the proper wall.

I have to say I'm really enjoying watching your first-time perspectives on classic Who. I grew up with 80s Who and revisited all the old stuff during the 90s and beyond, so had that fore knowledge of Hartnell through McGann, so when I got to watching the originals - I knew who was who, and what to expect to some degree. Fascinating watching you watching it for the first time and making some jumps and guesses!

Thanks for that! I saw it the first time round, in 1963, but that was a while ago and it was good to see it again as an adult, so that I could appreciate it on new levels. Also good to see the reactions of someone who'd never seen it before. If you watched all the end credits you'd understand why the Doctor's parents in Family of Blood were named Sydney and Verity - an homage to Who's origins. When they brought Who back they were determined to keep as true to the original as possible - they certainly succeeded with the TARDIS noise. And the theme, written by Ron Grainer but created by Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - all electronic sounds, crafted note by note. All new Who has done to it is to add an orchestra and more clatter [to quote Murray Gold] which wasn't available at the time. ps; to answer your question: if they hadn't been so nosy there wouldn't have been a story!

One of the problems is that a lot of the early episodes, with the first and second Doctors, were destroyed. The audio for all of them was recovered, and some of them were remade with animation, which is pretty cool. But a lot of them are gone forever. There are some hard core fans who made fan reconstructions with the audio and old still photos and such.

There are so many great classic stories (and some really dire ones) that it's very difficult to choose one to start with. But you might choose one story for each classic Doctor. Ask your subscribers to vote for their favorites and see what comes out on top.

I would strongly recommend watching classic Who in order. Several episodes from the 60s are sadly missing to this day (though some have been reconstructed by telesnaps or animations), but every story that have been released on DVD is reaction worthy. If you picked stories from random, you wouldn't have the same emotional connection to the characters, and there are MANY shocks that are reaction worthy.

I grew up with the classic series so this is far from new ground for me. I caught reruns of the 3rd and 4th Doctor's adventures on PBS when I was a kid. Then my local PBS station started showing them all from 1963 to the late 5th Doctor era which was the current at that time and then I carried on watching until the original series ended in 1989. I think this first episode is very well done. It sets the mood, introduces the Doctor, and uses the soon to be new human companions (Ian and Barbara) as the audience's bridge into the strange and wild universe of the Doctor. (Which is exactly what RTD did with his pilot for the new series. He had us follow Rose through her normal life until she happened upon weirdness at work and subsequently met up with the 9th Doctor.) I'm sure RTD was inspired by this episode as the "Introduce the audience to the Doctor's world via the average human companions" formula worked so well the first time around! The TARDIS sound FX have changed very little over the years, and all the theme tune variations (classic and new series) were based on the Ron Grainer/Delia Derbyshire original you heard here, so lots of variation, but no complete deviation from the Theme arrangement established in "An Unearthly Child". The Daleks are pretty much the same right out of the gate in story 2 of Season one, as they are now. And wheras the TARDIS console room sets have varied widely in the New Series, the general layout is the same as the 1963 original. Console in the center, furniture, Coat rack and random items procured on his travels seen here and there around it. All of the original series variants of the console room had Roundeled walls unlike the new series which often doesn't. Anyway, Hartnell's performance and arc from standoffish to endearing, and detached observer to active righter of wrongs is worth the journey. Plus the relationship he develops over time with Ian and Barbara is wonderful.
@Lasherluke4 жыл бұрын
finally someone reacting to classic dr. who, oh btw, it was meant to start off as semi educational, to the point that the original creator didn't want the daleks in it at all, that is until how popular their first story was at the time, eventually the educational angel was dropped.

7:12 As a prospective teacher myself, I have to inform you that it's part of our job to worry about our students. Maybe not to the point of stalking them, but still. What happens in the home also _is_ our business for two reasons 1. Their homework and schoolwork can be affected, and 2. We're responsible to some extent for their health, for example we're mandatory reporters in the case of suspected abuse, if we even suspect it to be a possibility we're supposed to report it to the administration.
