In Legion, the storyline actually has you play *as* Illidan, reliving parts of his past that led him to becoming a Demon Hunter.

Gul'dan was the first ever warlock in wow lore. He helped Medivh, Sargaras open the dark portal by manipulating Ner'zhul and the orcs to bring the Legion to Azeroth
