Denethor (Faramir/Boromir's father) is not as sympathetic in the films because they don't tell you WHY he is insane. The thing is, he had one palantir (one of the crystal balls) just like Saruman and Sauron, and he has been using it for years to outguess sauron's strategies and to keep his people safe, which is one of the reasons they haven't been defeated already. But this eventually made him go nuts.

Quick explanation about Denethor: He was always a quiet, distant man to everyone, even his family. However, the main reason for this was that, like Saruman, he decided to use a Palantir. But unlike the Istari (wizard), Denethor's strength of mind meant he could not be corrupted like Saruman was. Instead, Sauron used his side of the Palantir to make Denethor despair by deceiving him into thinking his task was overwhelming. The depression he felt at the state he saw his realm in, thanks to centuries of war with Mordor and the East, made him look to Boromir as almost a 'saviour' of Gondor. But his dark mood was compounded in Faramir's case, for it was after his birth that their mother, Finduilas, began to weaken. Four years later, she died, and Denethor became even more grim. The difference in the way he treated each of his sons deepened, he never remarried, and took to using the Palantir more and more, until at last Sauron achieved his objective of driving him mad. He's quite a tragic character in some ways, but I get that the movie had to accentuate, for the sake of time, his more negative character traits. There was just no way they could fit in all that info with so much to cover.
@davewolf62564 жыл бұрын
Well, it's kind of absurd for a mortal man to have the wisdom of an immortal like the Wizards (Istari). But Tolkein often does things like that in his storytelling--offering a magical, expository or extrinsic explanation for something that can be explained by character. I think a more compelling reason for why Saruman was corrupted but Denethor driven mad is Sauron's will. Sauron, hateful and flamboyant, would have had a particular hatred for Gondor, the seat of Isildur. It would have been great character development for Sauron--the enigmatic enemy--if he took a different tack with Denethor simply because he wanted to wipe Minas Tirith from the face of Middle Earth, out of spite and vengeance.
@Ereldor4 жыл бұрын
@@davewolf6256 Very interesting point! Beregond mentions as much - that Sauron's chief enmity is toward Gondor whilst showing Pippin his duties - thanks to being founded by Elendil and his sons, the Faithful Numenoreans whom he could not corrupt. But it's not only a question of wisdom; in the books, it's also about whom the Palantiri were meant for. Originally, they were a gift from the Elven peoples to the Edain after the island of Numenor had been raised. The scene in the movie, where Aragorn confronts Sauron through the Seeing Stone, is particularly poignant, as it actually happened - in the books - just after Pippin had been revived by Gandalf. He uses it to alarm Sauron by wresting control of it from him, so that he can see what the Enemy is up to without fear of interference. He can do this, thanks to being a descendant of Isildur, thus nullifying even Sauron's control of an artefact meant for the service of his people. The fact that he, a mortal man, could do this to the Dark Lord of Mordor, was always very extraordinary to me, growing up.
@davewolf62564 жыл бұрын
@@Ereldor I can imagine so. But it sounds like it's moving because of Aragorn's mortality, because while he is meek compared to Sauron (who could be understood as the Middle Earth Equivalent to Beelzebub), Aragorn's strength of character weathers contact with the Dark Lord. Although I admit I never finished reading the Two Towers, I know enough about the lore of LOTR to see a pattern of "free will" in the franchise. Sauron and the Balrogs are supposed to have been seduced by evil, much like Saruman. Similarly, mortals respond to temptation differently. Denethor is eventually driven mad by Sauron through the Palantir; Isildur is seduced by the ring. Frodo is finally seduced by the ring; but Sam resists its seduction to him. And Aragorn neither tries to steal the ring, as did Boromir, nor is shaken when he uses the Palantir. I mention it all because the ambiguities about why one did, and one did not succumb to these torments gives a lot of substance to these characters--especially when the reasons they turned out that way are not spelled out. And Tolkein always struck me as having a Homeric style of storytelling in that he leaves explanations for almost anything. But when I do reopen these books, I hope the insight into these characters' motivations are restrained. It tends to give a story life beyond the mere reading of the book. I'll offer you an example. I've been reading a fantasy manga called Berserk (which has had its ups and downs over 20+ years of publication). From its first volume, the main character has obtained a magic charm that is predestined to fall into the possession of some person and open a gate into a hellish spirit world. The main character is at first motivated to use it to get revenge, but he and his motivations have changed since the first volume. And despite the questions surrounding it, I believe it would be better for the charm to pass out of his hands without the questions being answered. Because at this point, it represents his aspiration for revenge more than anything else, and letting it go will symbolize growing past and, in essence, overcoming the trauma in his life. That is the most artful way to conclude that story, IMO. And similarly, I think the most artful way to think of LOTR is one in which raises more questions about characterization and motives, than one which answers them. Obviously, I kind of know how the books end, but there's no need to defend the books. I am just explaining the delicacy that I hope Tolkein applied to his stories, and that I think all writers should take with their writing.

The ride of the Rohirrim on the fields of Pelennor is actually more epic in the book. It is Theoden's redemption of his self doubt as a king and a warrior. "At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before: Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."

I think the film nailed the scene as well as it could have, and just how I think Tolkien might have envisioned it. I interpret the book's passage as being akin to a retelling of events by the surviving witnesses of the charge, who added god-like imagery and extended metaphor in reverence to Theoden's valiant actions. It fits perfectly as an ode to a fallen and beloved king with the reference to his proud Rohirri ancestors. If it was presented literally, beat-for-beat like that in the film with the god imagery and all, I think it would have cheapened Theoden's character as an ageing mortal man facing his very certain end, yet mustering such courage that he could make the forces of evil feel fear. tl;dr: Theoden isn't literally being empowered by Orome, another Valar or even his ancestors from beyond the grave. He's just so badass that the story tells it as though he should have had divine assistance to have that much raw willpower.

If you're thinking of watching the Hobbit after this, may I recommend the 1977 adaptation by Rankin and Bass? Yes there is a very recent live action trilogy, yes this adaptation is a made for TV animated movie... BUT The Hobbit is a very different story than The Lord of the Rings, it's a much shorter tale that Tolkein wrote with his children in mind (The Lord of the Rings was, in part, intended to be a sequel for them as adults). The cartoon adaptation does a very good job of keeping the tone of the book, with changes mostly for adapting a written story to a visual story as well as for run time (there's enough material only for one movie, maybe two short movies... not three long movies). It's very considerately done: one plot point simplification, and was done in a way as a call back to Beowulf, which was considered a garbage poem of little import before Tolkein's work on Old English literature (actually, Tolkein used a lot of elements from the poem in The Hobbit). They also managed to incorporate a lot of the poems and songs from the book into the movie, which is generally considered one of the wonderful things about Tolkein's writing. The live action trilogy is... well, it's not Tolkein. Arguably not even Peter Jackson. If you want to know more, potentially after seeing the trilogy, too, I highly recommend Lindsay Ellis's analysis of it. She does film analysis on youtube and made what is frankly a documentary - like, she went to New Zealand and interviewed people from the cast and local film industry. Oh and about tarantulas? There's some research suggesting fear of spiders is connected to them exhibiting several things that trip our amygdala including having quick and sudden movements, being tiny and dark, and having bodies that are angular/jagged looking . None of that applies to tarantulas. I'm also an arachnophobe, but once had to work with some kids on a science project which they chose to involve a live tarantula... hands down the most comfortable I've ever been around a spider, though I did not accept their offer to let me hold it (freakin kids...).

•In the books, Denethor's wife died in childbirth to Faramir. Aside from that, I don't know why Lord Denethor wins the Worst Father Award, but props to John Noble for his performance. •The Charge of Faramir scene reminds me of The Charge of the Light Brigade, "Theirs not to reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die." It also reminds me of the old myth of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. •So during the War of the Last Alliance, the Men of Dunharrow pledge themselves to Isildur to fight, but broke their oath and vanished into the mountains. So Isildur cursed them so that until they fullfill their pledge, their souls will never rest. Now, they are the Army of the Dead or the Oathbreakers. Let the ghosts have their rest. •Grond or the Wolf's Head is the bigger battering ram the Orcs brought in to breach the city. •Shelob is one of the Great Spiders and in the Tolkien Mythology, the greatest of the children of Ungoliant, the primordial spider. Shelob will hunt and eat anything the comes across her caves. She first stings her prey, causing them to go into paralysis, then wraps them up and eats them raw. Imagine being the size of a hobbit and being stung by a spider that gigantic.

Been a while so I might be a little off, but about the Dead/Ghosts or rather "Oathbreakers". Those men have once upon a time betrayed Elendil and/or his sons (Isildur and someone I can't recount) before their fight against Sauron. For their betrayal, Isildur cast a curse upon them, hence their current state. The only way that curse could be lifted, is if one of Isildur's line (kings of Gondor) would consider their Oaths fulfilled. That is also why Aragorn, being a descendant of that line actually has an effect on them. Loved your reaction! So genuine and emotionally invested, it's amazing to watch!

Love your reactions! The emotions are great! Here are some explanations for the questions you might have had: The Elves of Elrond and Galadriel as well as Mirkwood (where Legolas is from) are actually very busy at that time. It is only said in the books but they were fighting a desperate war of defense themselves and at that very moment attacking a stronghold of Sauron. Same with the dwarves. The ghosts were men who had been allies of Isildur (the guy who cut the ring off Sauron's finger) but then broak their oaths and refused to fight. So Isildur cursed them to not find rest until they fullfilled their oaths. Aragorn is Isildur's heir and thus can command them and give them the chance to finally die. There is a reason why Denethor (the dad) is such an asshole and insane. In the books it is not as extreme and he doesn't go mad as quickly but the movie didn't have the time to show all that. The reason is that Denethor had one of the Palantiri (that crystall ball Pippin looked into) and had been fighting a battle of wills against Sauron himself through that ball for months. He lost that fight and his mind suffered from that. On top of that Sauron showed him images and visions of war and how his city would fall and how hopeless his situation was, convincing him that there was no hope.

I believe Faramir probably resembles his mother who is apparently deceased prior to this story. Denethor resents him, and that could be why. Either that, or he resembles Denethor himself and it's self-loathing. But typically the first born son will resemble the father, and that's Boromir.

Something they mostly skipped in the movies except for a couple references is that the other groups of elves and dwarves were also fighting Sauron's forces in their own lands.

Without a doubt the battle in the fields of Pelennor and the final fight in Avengers are the most epic moments that we've lived in the cinema. The difference is that the first one does belong to a good movie.

Hi. I love your reactions. Others have explained Denethors attitude to Faramir, so I'll just add that Faramirs character actually gets changed in these movies too. In the books he quite easily resists the temptation of the ring and let's the hobbits go a lot earlier, showing that he has the willpower and wisdom Boromir lacked. Also, please read the Silmarillion too if you enjoy the books. It's basically the history of middle earth and contains many epic stories and characters

After Faramir's birth, his mother Findulias of Dol Amroth grew weaker and eventually died, that and along with his learning and friendship with Gandalf, made Denethor grew cold towards his second son.

Rohan is the kingdom, the fortified town where the king is based is called Edoras. Frodo sees in Smeagol/gollum what he could become, and is becoming. One big problem I have with Shelob the giant spider is that no known species of spider has a sting, every spider has a venomous bite. Your hair looks great.

If I remember correctly, Denethor (father of Boromir and Faramir) was not a fan of Gandalf. Gandalf taught Faramir a lot of stuff and that's the reason, why Denethor sees Faramir as a disgrace of his lineage.
@evenmoor4 жыл бұрын
Also: Faramir, as he grew older, proved a more thoughtful and calculating captain, as opposed to his brother's brash, action-oriented leadership.This, combined with the fact that the blood of Númenor ran true in Faramir, served to remind Denethor of someone he knew in his youth, a man who had served as a captain of Gondor and led a wildly successful expedition against the Corsairs of Umbar. This man, Thorongil, was an inspiring leader and natural captain in a way that Denethor was not, plus Denthor's father Echtelion loved Thorongil, so Denethor was supremely jealous of the man. It's possible that Denethor also knew Thorongil's true identity and feared that his supposed rival was setting up to take over Gondor, because Thorongil's real name was Aragorn.

Just to flesh out the person behind all of this a little more, Tolkien was friends with CS Lewis, who wrote the Narnia books, and there are a bunch of interesting anecdotes about the two of them, like that they just showed up to a New Years Eve party some time in the 1930's dressed as polar bears for some reason. It wasn't a costume party. I have no context for why, and I don't want any. Also, Tolkien used to cosplay (definitely didn't call it that at the time) as an Anglo-Saxon warrior with an axe and scare his neighbors.

She perked up and just said "Aragorn!" 1302 A lot of people have pointed out Theoden and Denethor are two different ways to face seeming death and ruin. One is to give in to despair, welcoming destruction. The other is to turn and fight, not even expecting to win, but to do down unafraid. Your reactions are FANTASTIC btw! What I would give for one of the Rohirrim's war horns!

What’s so powerful about the ride of the Rohirrim and the cries of DEATH is this: It is not fatalism on the part of Theoden that makes him get his men to shout “death”.. Remember - he ALSO tells them to fear no darkness. What he IS telling them is to ACCEPT the death of many of them and to not fear it - to not give in to fear of personal death even though it may come. But to have the courage to do what must be done. This is the moment where King Theoden proves Elrond wrong. That the strength of men is NOT failing. The orcs that show fear in the face of the cavalry charge are reverting to their true nature - that of cowards who can only fight and win against an enemy who is afraid. These MEN charging them are the first men they have ever personally seen who show them NO FEAR. And in the face of that courage they CRUMBLE!!!

You're so sweet and pretty, and you get all emotional over the sad parts and you coo adorably whenever you see something cute (like Ewoks or Baby Yoda). But then when orcs are being killed you're all "Yes! Kill them! Crush them! Tear them to pieces!" It's quite the contrast, and I love it!

Alright, Duaffy, some things to understand about Denethor. Just like Theoden, Jackson took some liberties with the characters in the books. While Denethor does treat Faramir poorly in the books, his treatment of him is exaggerated in the films. Faramir still gets abused, but Denethor isn't quite as despicable about it. He's still bad, just not that bad. That's the key difference between book and film. Jackson exaggerates many characters, some for the better, some for the worse. Merry and Pippin are another example. In the books, they're much more mature characters. I tend to welcome Jackson's choice here as it makes them a little more endearing as they "grow". Oh and Shelob (the spider) isn't an "animal". Just like the Balrog, she is a demon of the ancient world. Don't feel bad for her.

Denethor's dislike of Faramir is rooted in the differences between Faramir and Boromir as children. Boromir looked up to his father, while Faramir looked up to Gandalf, who Denethor believed was trying to remove him from power - hence the line "Boromir was loyal to me and no wizard's pupil." Denethor's loss of sanity is directly attributed to the fact that he too had a Palantir, as Saruman did, and Sauron crushed his spirit when he gazed in to it. But Denethor's Palantir is missing from the film, so his descent in to madness is assigned to his loss of his favourite son, in stark contrast to Théoden who grieved for the loss of his only son but was able to gather himself and be strong enough to lead his people to war.
@cindylou32054 жыл бұрын
Mercy- Aragorn spared Wormtongue, Wormtongue was the one to kill Saruman. Frodo spared Gollum (until it was a straight up fight), and Gollum was the reason the ring did get destroyed. Interesting.

@stephenfitzgerald97694 жыл бұрын
Denethor resents Faramir because Faramir’s mother died giving birth to him. Denethor’s battle of wills with Sauron while looking in the palantir have both driven Denethor mad and escalated that resentment into hatred.
