I mean, Maximus was at the top of his combat skills but Hector is in a different level. Both are normal soldiers, humans with weaknesses, but at the end of the day, Hector would win because he had the toughest combat with Aquilles. The Greek himself recognized that Hector was the only one who gave him a real challenge, even if the Troyan warrior had some help of the Gods. He even battle with Ajax, a warrior that could take down full grown horses and has inmense strength and both never defeated each other but in this movie Hector actually kills Ajax. But you are right, that would be a more fair fight.

Hector was a truly great warrior but Achilles was supposedly a demi god (according to legend) Hector coulnd't actually beat him since Achilles was invulnerable (except in his heel) Hector was honorable for facing death in single combat against Achilles and putting up a fight even though he knew he was no match for Achilles. Achilles then disgraced himself by defiling Hectors body by dragging it behind his chariot He later made some amends by giving his body back to Hectors father who pleaded to allow him to bury his son. Achilles was later killed by Hectors brother, who shot him with an arrow in his vulnerable spot (his heel)

The legend of achilles says he was the greatest single warrior in history if that helps. They said on the battlefield he was untouchable but hector was the only man that was almost a match for him which is why this fight was important. Thats my only complaint about this film. They down played the importance of this fight from the source material. Also this portrays Hector as always on the defensive when he actually gave achilles a run for his money. Also in the lore achilles is half God which again makes the fact that Hector almost beat him much more important.

the "now you know who you are fighting" line is because the day before Achilles Cousin took his armor/weapons and pretended to be him even his men said he fought just like Achilles .The cousin took Achillles men into battle after he order them not to fight....thinking it was Achillies, Hector singled out the cousin duel him to the death and won but wasn't till he was dead that everyone even Achillie's own men realized it was the cousin and not him. (its his cousin in the movie but in the mythology they had a relationship together which was common in greek culture at the time)

A couple things: 1) To see Maximus V Achilles would be cool. Different styles of fighting. Roman legionary/gladiator Greek hop lite. But you have remember Achilles couldn’t die unless he was struck in his ankle which would’ve been super unlikely given his already amazing fighting skills. 2) this fight is the result of Hector killing a man named Patroclus. In the movie Patroclus is depicted as Achilles younger cousin. But scholars debate on wether he was Achilles cousin/brother most believe Patroclus was Achilles lover. 3) It was said after Achilles killed Hector he dragged his[Hectors] body around the city of Troy for 7-14 days screaming at the walls of how Hector was a coward and a failure, taunting all of Troy. This movie got every fight incorrect, was just entertaining only. Hector could not beat ajax, but movie he kills him. Achilles was a demi god, his mother gave him protection. He was baptized kind of in certain waters. his mother forgot to cover his entire body with this protection.= leaving his lower leg unprotected. When he was angering the gods, it was Apollo that killed Achilles at the end. A poison gold arrow was fired at the one part of him with 0 protection. = only his mother or another god would have known about. Thus when the body is found only 1 wound is seen, strange arrow in his "Achilles tendon " This movie missed out on a lot of awesome story lore. The Ajax battle was said to be the longest, with 0 winners. Ajax was given a sword by hector, that night he killed himself with it. The real battle between Achilles and hector was not this close in the movie. The real fight took awhile not because. of skill. Hector was running away from Achilles alot.
