Problem: Landing with a cobra manuever just before the entry is not feasible. You need to be travelling at a much higher speed, than landing speed, to pull a "proper" Cobra, and then land cleanly. Yes a cobra slows you down, but, at sea/ground level the air resistance would send you hurdling down to earth. Up 8000 feet in the air? The air is much thinner, and offers less resistance. Making it easier not to stall.
