In this video I react to The Rattlin Bog at an Irish Wedding! I've had so many people recommend that I check this out and now I know why. This was awesome! As someone who loves Irish folk music, The Rattlin Bog didn't disappoint.
This is the type of song that I can't help but stomp my feet and try to sing along to even though I don't know the lyrics. LOL Also, do Irish weddings generally last until 5am? If so, I love it and this is my type of party. The woman singing has an amazing voice, of course I love Irish accents, but still I can't imagine finding a better version of The Rattlin Bog.

Yes..I said out loud at my Dad's funeral, in England, (he was Irish).. Oh.. Dad would have LOVED this! says it all. lol. My Mother' side of the family.. not her.. were a bit more strait laced let say.. and were a bit sniffy. No one was out of order on the Irish side.. but compared to the other side.. a distinct lack of stuffiness at the wake.

There's a saying in Scotland that there's more fun at a Glasgow funeral than there is at an Edinburgh wedding, it's true. Been to too many funerals in Scotland, England and both sides of the Irish border the Scots and Irish have similar energy at funerals.

We love a good funeral here in Ireland. And weddings are usually stretched over a couple of days now. At a wedding the hotel usually has a residents bar open and that’s what you’re seeing here. She would have been singing that from childhood and probably at every session and family get together for years. We love our sing songs here 😊 Just brilliant 🤩 🇮🇪

I took the day off work once to go to a funeral. Massive drinking afterwards, and great craic. The only thing missing was Jay, the deceased. I got to work the next day with the mother of all hangovers. "Thought you went to a funeral" they said. I replied "an Irish funeral". "Ah..."

I’m English I’m Irish decent my grandmother grandfather mother and father was all born and raised in Ireland I’ve been to many Irish weddings and I can confirm the weddings do go on to all hours in the morning and once the music stops the singing starts!!! 🇮🇪 ☘️ 🍻

I attended a few of my cousins' weddings in Ireland and they generally last three days. The church, the reception until daybreak (almost), everyone gets some sleep in the morning, showers then head to the parents' of the couple for more partying, and this goes on the next day, too. Funerals and wakes can last a week. I grew up in Australia (in the Irish diaspora) and funerals went for at least 3 days there; weddings were dependent on location. If a wedding or wake took place in the outback which involved travelling long distances, then all gatherins were at least a week long.

That's the bride in white sitting on the groom's lap and her sister is doing the singing. The 'stayers' are still up and partying at 8am when others are coming down for their breakfast. The 'legends' are still up and partying on the Monday morning at 8am when the hotel is considering calling outside assistance to get rid of them... Irish weddings are usually 'alright' or f**king legendary!!!

Hi Steve just came across your channel. What lovely comments you had. There’s definitely one thing the Irish can do so well and that’s have a great night out, if it’s just a weekend wedding or our country playing sports and going to the pub/bar we definitely know how to have a great night and get everyone involved into all hours of the morning. I don’t know this song myself but it looks like there unwinding I guarantee at about 2/3 am they where up dancing singing arms around each other having an amazing time but it gets to the point where people obviously start getting tired going to bed the ones that can hang in there longer will tend to sit around just like themselves and sing songs or tell stories and unwind. That’s beautiful to hear you want to know more about your ancestors and be proud of that, being a Dubliner lived in the states for 10 years I have to say coming home just missed and loved how friendly and welcoming the Irish are compared to other countries no disrespect. Best wedding I ever went to was a friend's aunt, in Donegal. I was treated like family. The whole event evolved over a long weekend, and the actual day culminated in the Priest joining us for a pub crawl and sing along after the main reception. Many drinks, songs, and pubs later my friend and I staggered back to the family's house at dawn 👍😂🍻🍷🍾🎉😎

Us Irish happen to get married at a party. My wedding, DJ got drunk, that's fine was a friend of ours. My husbands uncle in law took over "Djaying". To this day people talk of the best wedding they were at (23 years later and a divorce). The girl singing is the sister of the bride, in white to her left as you look at the screen. Sweet moment when the singers new brother in law picked up her drink for her to take a sip during the chorus.

Years ago a friend of mine from Belfast told me how he spent a few days out in Arran island in the West of Ireland. He said he went to the bar at around 1am for another drink and asked the bar man when the pub shut. After thinking for a minute he replied "I think it shuts in September for a couple of days". 😅

I wouldn't be a heavy drinker myself - but I can honestly say I've never been told to leave an Irish pub because it's closing time - they would just have a "Lock in".....! One time many years ago I left a bar and I was drunk - the local police sergeant met me at the door and asked where my car was - i pointed in the general direction - he took me to my car put me in the passenger seat and drove me home - with another officer following in the patrol car to collect him - only in Ireland...!

Some of my fondest memories of when i was young was going to see my Uncle play in an popular irish fok band in Southern Ireland at the time called The Wexford Emeralds, two acoustic guitars and a singer loved the energy of the jigs the atmosphire was electric and the ballads, the singer (John Aspal's) voice was so amazing it stired emotions in me even though i was only 12 or 13 and born in England, i knew little of Irish history other then what my Mother told me and didn't really comprehend or truely understand the passion in the song or catch the connection to Mother' side of the family untill i was trying research to my mothers branch of the family tree, on the web early 2000 'early into the linternet age but found very little and only one clip of my Uncle playing in the Band on TV when looking to record some of the songs my Uncle sung which was frusttrating because i know they released several Albums and recorded for TV a lot more then once they were good enough to be invited to and play in The Royal Albert Hall in london I told my Mother (God rest her soul) i was trying find Uncle Paddiy's Band, The Wexford Emerld online but no luck, she said to me "no it maybe because they are Irish rebel songs writtern fron the time of William of Orange invasion of Ireland when the Dutchman was given the crown of England and became Edward the 1st including the irish uprising of 1916 and the two world war and would have been baned in England" and then calmly added " Your Grandad was considered as "Persona non grata" in England meaning unwelcome person i wont go into the details now this comment is long enough already, its for another time, its a long story, if you would like to know more about this i'll be happy tell you, just let me know if you do So my Uncle may have been cosidered the same because of subject of the songs he sang being mainly anti English Establishment. but are still beautiful emotive songs, sung with passion and pride. i remember the words to most of the song they sang, as i grew older i learnt more of the poignancy and meaning behind the lyriics, I've allways loved irish folk music but since ny Mother passed away at the end of 2021 i find it hard to listen to a folk song in an Irish accent without my emotions overwelmimg me, even writing this has been an emotiohnal rollacoster, i have lernt more irish history in folk music then i ever learnt in school i went to a Romen Catholic School in England, 99% of the pupils were either Irish or Italian and pupils born in England but had irish or Italian parents, even four of our teachers were Irish Nuns but they only taught Dogma and refused to discuss anything that wasn't ordained in thier holy orders to God and would fly in to a rage if we asked question about Evolution, Aliens, Dinosaurs, the age of our planet, Pagan festivals and Traditions usurped into christianity ect , ect, ect basicly anything that conflicts with Doctrine, so no hope of learning any reality there then, you are more likly able to access a lot more imformation from the Irish prospective living in the US then i ever have living in England

The Wedding goes on till about 2 am but the Resident bar in the Hotel for people staying there stays open until all hours. Even when you aren't at a wedding the Resident bar is open late. I stayed in Killarney once and we were in the resident bar until nearly 5 am drinking

My brothers wedding in Scotland in a extreamly well known hotel was so much fun. It was the first time a rock band played in the hotel. When we were doing the scottish dancing there were so many taking part it ran into the hall , we were screaming (as you do) and throwing each other about. There were loads off foreners who loved the Bag Pipes and Address to the Haggis and the open bar (unusual at a Brittish wedding). They were supprised at how wild it was and how long it went on. Thanks Stu for the Full Scottish bfast the next morning, etc. Although i didn't go for Champagne that morning.

Not sure what you mean by open bar,but at my brothers wedding 20 years ago in ireland ,because he lived in england aand was marrying an english girl they had a free,but it didn't translate and it quickly returned to an ordinary bar.Free bars are rare at weddings in ireland i mean its enough to pay for the dinners nevermind the drink aswell for 200 or so guests which would be about average at an irish wedding.

I usually go to bed around 10pm, latest... I was born, bred and breathe Ireland...I was convinced on my wedding night I'd be in bed for 2am (weird for someone in Ireland on their wedding day)...it was 5am...and my extended family started arriving at my house 5 hours later, which ended up being 60 people drinking by 2pm...I was holding my larynx trying to talk. Awh that woman's a lovely singer, I'm sure she could sing anything but to make The Rattlin Bog sound good and flow like that is a great achievement; let alone remember all the words! 😂 I think l heard one of the party say Go Hiontach at the end of it all which is a show of admiration for her, like Bravo or Well done! I would say this is her party piece and that is not the first time she sang it as l find it very hard to remember anything after the chick and that's sober, l wouldn't have a hope of remembering the order if l had been drinking for most of the day 🤣 Irish Weddings can be a 48hr event with possibly a cat nap from 6am to 8am depending on what time the hotel is serving breakfast at!

Irish weddings are the best craic.Come to one of Ireland 32 counties and experience in a bar this. One night close to the British border in Ireland there was a bar. I was serving myself drinks in the bar, and then Garda and psni came in and started drinking with us too until 6/7am. Love bandit country

I don't know if anyone else can confirm this, when I first saw this video a few years ago I am sure someone said the girl singing is the brides sister, the bride is the girl in white sat on the guys lap, I think someone else said the guy she was sat on was their brother, anyone know is this is correct. I will say one thing and I will keep it to one thing that I want to say the woman and the group singing at that wedding were the best how they made the choreography of the music singing through the melody of however they were doing it is amazing this is by far one of the greatest traditional Irish songs backdated history and they will never ever ever ever ever be anybody that does it better than this Irish wedding and that's that

Rattlin Bog is one of quite a few songs that 'build' with each verse, in Irish/British folklore, the best known possibly being the children's rhyme, "One man went to mow." In country districts there are often local versions too - and sometimes the songs have accompanying dances, either for children or more generally. Back in my Sunday School days for example (50+ years ago), we had a party song/game, "The farmer's in his den..." In the second verse, it was "The famer wants a wife.."; the third was, "The wife wants a child...", then "The child wants a dog..." followed by "The dog wants a bone - in each case, someone in the room being chosen to represent the latest 'want'. In the last verse however, it's "The bone won't break.." with everyone surrounding the poor 'bone' and hammering it from all directions! A further song might be the Old woman who swallowed a fly, then a spider, then a bird, then a cat, then a dog, then a cow, and finally a horse, rhyming with, "But now she's dead - of course." Others are distinctly more adult in their content, such as "The Ball of Kirriemuir," which is said to have been an actual event that took place in that Scottish town, in the 1880s. Steve, no drinking Game. Believe me. We just love singing and dancing in Ireland. The drinking just carries on alongside every one of these occasions. The Wedding itself if very formal, but after the speeches And the meal etc. the craic really begins. These things usually last two days. When my brother got Married 30 years ago, my late uncle lost his job for not Getting back to work for 5 days😂😂God help us!

I'm from England but my uncle was Irish and my Surname is Irish as is o,dwyer which my uncles last name was. He was a great craic as the Irish say 😂 but that was amazing,loved it ❤

Same here, I am also from England, Liverpool But my Maternal grandmother was born in Ireland, her maiden name was O`Brien . The Irish certainly know how to enjoy themselves 👍👍

If you want to hear some more modern Irish music, there's a rap group called "Kneecap", who are based in Belfast, and they rap in the Irish language (Gaeilge) as well as in english, most of their songs have an interesting 50/50 mix of the english and Irish language, absolutely recommend! They have a song called "HOOD" that would be good to start with

Yes absolutely! At least 5am if not dawn and then it starts again the next day when the pubs open! Residents Bar is the Hotels at weddings stay open til about 6am. The second day is often better because the pressure is off the bride. Second day starts at 11am with usually a band in the pub, trad band, drinking games, then DJ later and again the Hotel Residents bar!

In fairness, I'd say this is maybe 03:00am. Bars in hotels, (where weddings are hosted) close around this time. Some hotels will continue serving staying guests. Rural weddings get away with murder with residents bars though.

Arís, As Gealige. Irish weddings tend to be fairly stuffy and as you describe till after the meal But once the music starts and the fuddys that tell the band to turn it down go.. it goes all night. And then there is the 1 table that starts singing rebel songs all night or the uncles that get in a fight.. Family's great hey 😅

weddings in Ireland are a Major piss-up( party) but they are dressy events usually because they are held in Fancy Hotels AND Irish people love to go out socially and rock great looks all the time (so weddings are where you step it up ) but it's def not stuffy it's the Reverse!

I grew up in Ulster and we sang this song at Scout camps in the 1980s. When I was at University in Leicester, England, I tried to teach the song to a local Scout group and their parents at a Halloween bonfire. One smartarse shouted out, "Speak English. We can't understand you!" I replied to him with a joke; 'Why were the Irish born stupid?' "Why?" He says. 'So the English can understand us.' That shut him up.
