Reacting To My Roots

Күн бұрын

In this video I react to the history of The Crown Jewels. I had no idea the British Crown Jewels have a 1500 year history and through all of these centuries the crown jewels have been lost, sold and even melted down into coins. I also assumed the crown jewels were simply the crown, the scepter and the orb, but there are many more unique pieces that I had never even seen before.
This was so interesting and I learned so much more than I expected. I can't wait to visit the UK and see these pieces of British history in person.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

Almost the first thing you ask is how much are they worth, well my American friend, they have more value than everything of worth in the entire world because it is not their intrinsic value that matters but what they represent. These baubles represent to right of Monarchs to Rule, they are the trappings of Office and of Service to the people and country.

Yes! All of that. ^^^ 😁 I'm getting so sick of people talking crap about our royalty...picking on the individual activities of a few family members instead of focusing on the Queen and her unblemished reign, and now we have our King...and what random family members get up to is not of THEIR choice, anymore than we are responsible for our relative's choices. Besides, even beyond our lifetime, it is the history that it represents and what it means. People saying they cost us taxes....but hospitality employs more people here than any other sector, and our royal family brings in MILLIONS in tourism, without which so many hospitality jobs wouldn't be needed. Anyway, I just appreciate your proud comment! 😘🇬🇧

The Coronation Spoon, dates back much further, to the 12th century. The value of the Imperial State Crown is between £3 billion and £5 billion, with the 317-carat Cullinan II (the diamond at the centre of the piece) alone being estimated at £400 million.

That helmet was found at the Sutton Hoo ship burial, and was probably the property of King Redwald of the Anglian Kings. It is not made of valuable metals, but is of high quality steel and is inset with many semi-precious deep red garnet stones, which give the impression of the helmet and things like his belt-buckle being spattered with fresh blood. Gives a good example of how a king expected to be thought of back then.

In the UK, the the old adage of "The King never dies" is followed. Charles became King the moment Elizabeth died, though the Accession was officially announced by proclamation a little later. The Coronation is just the formal investiture. You should look into Cromwell and also compare his actions with those of other dictators in history.
@MrBulky992
@MrBulky992 Жыл бұрын
Cromwell was installed as Lord Protector in Westminster Hall. King Edward's Chair containing the Stone of Destiny was used for this rite. After the Restoration, Cromwell's body was exhumed from its place of honour in Westminster Abbey and put on trial. He was found guilty and "executed" at Tyburn and his head hacked off and put on a pole. Other living signatories to Charles I's death warrant were rounded up, imprisoned, put on trial and, in numerous cases, executed. All of the legislation passed by Parliament after the fall of Charles I was repealed (declared null and void). To this day, Cromwell's reputation is a contraversial one. He helped to overthrow a tyrant king, only to become, arguably, one himself, dissolving Parliament and introducing a military dictatorship. Parliament was, of course, very corrupt and neither they nor Cromwell had any interest in introducing any true form of democracy that we would recognise today. I think his regime actually put the British people off the idea of republican government: once it had been tried, no one wanted to return to it. Cromwell's impositions in relation to religion were every bit as bad (by today's standards) as those of Charles I (but at the opposite end of the spectrum). Cromwell committed atrocities in Ireland. Clearly, he had some supporters throughout the intervening centuries as there is a statue of him outside the Houses of Parliament. If there's any admiration left, overall it's grudging.

Cromwell's kinda a non-event. He thought kings were corrupt, so got rid of them and created a role called "Lord-Protector" and that role would pass to his son, and his sons son, etc. And the "lord-protector" had all the powers of a king. Basically, he sold the idea that kings are bad, and then made himself king but with a different title.

If you take a look at the 'Wash' on a map, you can ignore that little tidal estuary they showed and the image of King John crossing what looks like a river. The tide goes in an out a long way over the marshy shallows and much of the south-west corner is more than big enough to house a bombing range. It's 220,000 Square miles but obviously John would have travelled across the west side of it.

There are several stories told about the relocation of the Crown Jewels during the last war from being sealed in a secret chamber inside the walls of several royal residences from houses to castle’s in other tales, they were hidden in various locations in the four corners of the country , from a tin mine in Cornwall, to a slate mine in Wales and a cave in Scotland or even being boxed up ready to be shipped to Canada, where the royal family were to be evacuated in the event of invasion. So the choice is open for discussion as to which story is true. It could be that the pieces of regalia were split and sent to some of the locations while other pieces were sent to some of the other locations individually.

The context in the symbolism missing is that of the catholic Church and subservience to the pope and Henry VIII went protestant. Divine rule covered everything in the region as "given" by the pope, this is part of where the sceptre, basically the subservience was only with regard the the religious practices, the monarch was still the popes representative in this regard but not in terms of general rule. The Orb is when the Henry VIII formed the Church of England and outright rejected Catholicism (because he wanted another divorce).

You will find for centuries that in the British Isles, the idea of "who is the true king" was a moving target. Sometimes it was the first son of the previous king, sometimes the handpicked child of the previous king, the child of the previous king with the most money and land, the one with the biggest army, the one that the people of London proclaimed as king. It spilled a lot of blood. The instance of not being in the country when you are proclaimed king was a pretty dangerous idea, if there was somebody at home with an army who was really popular.

The Queen, before her coronation had to practice walking with the crown on her head and she said in a rare interview that if her head had tilted whilst wearing it her neck would have snapped with the weight of it.

Totally worth going to see the Jewels when in London, pre book !! Legend has it somewhere in the bogs and fens of Lincolnshire are the lost crown Jewels of King John. Don't beat yourself up about History knowledge you are doing an amazing job at self education. In Europe were are obsessed with History and the belief that if you ignore the lessons of the past/history you are doomed to repeat the errors. Part of what the founding fathers of america were trying to get away from was 'tradition' but they also in error also seem to have thrown the baby out with the bath water and stopped teaching history too. You and your family could try the Horrible Histories TV series :) which is where all kids i the UK start. The songs are brilliant - lots of KZbin clips to watch here is one of my favs as a sorry gift for the neg comments to make you smile - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqGZlHaPbZeIipI. Documentary .... you missed out on loads of bits of history and were given some really dodgy info - sorry.

They're obviously priceless, despite being fairly modern, but you could never sell them, except perhaps to a private collector. King John's crown jewels might still be out there somewhere, though the whole story might be a fabrication and they were really stolen. That odd-looking crown wasn't a crown, it was a diadem, a band that ran round the head, i.e. a headband. That was more traditional than a crown and goes back to the old Roman Empire and beyond.

Clive Myrie did a special programme for the BBC about the history of the crown Jewels and how they were made and maintained. You may no be able to put it on the channel (It may get blocked) but its worth seeing. As others have said, this narrator is not entirely correct, a lot were gifts, its just that some people regard them as stolen. Its contentious issue. When you come over, the Crown Jewels are in The Tower of London

The Royal family’s back in the day made the laws of the land. The big Diamond on the front of the Crown, which is called the Cullinan Diamond, was apparently gifted to King Edward VII by the government Transvaal Colony, in 1907. It is named the Cullinan Diamond after the owner of the Diamond mine in South Africa called Thomas Cullinan. He discovered it at his mine in Pretoria in South Africa in 1905. At first he thought it was a piece of useless crystal, until he dug it up. At the time the diamond mine was only two years old. There has been a partition in South Africa for the Diamond to be returned back to South Africa. The South Africans believe that us Brits stole it from them.

It wasn’t stolen. It was gifted. They’ve just been brainwashed into thinking it was under the current political climate.

A splendid reaction as ever but I wish the good lady narrating the video would adopt the British pronunciation of ‘monarch’ considering it is our institution! We do not have a ‘Mon-ARK’ but a ‘MON-uk’. Oh, and by the way, the central London HQ of the monarchy is not ‘Bucking-HAM Palace’ but ‘BUCK-inghum Palace’. Spread this information from sea to shining sea. Thank you!

Scotland also has its own Crown Jewels since Scotland had its own monarchy separate to England's until 1603 when England adopted Scotland's monarchy. These are the oldest Crown Jewels in Britain dating from the late 1400s to the early 1500s, since they were hidden from Oliver Cromwell. It's actually a really interesting story of how they were hidden and how they were. They were hidden in 1651, then hidden again in 1707, and weren't found again until 1818, by none other than Walter Scott. Would definitely recommend you looking into the story of the Scottish Crown Jewels.

The stone of scone is something of a head scratching session of itself with queen elizabeth ii. Wev've had stories of her signing the oath in the wrong place to be throned on a stolen or fake stone. The stone itself is a history and interesting stone of scone aka stone of destiny.

For Cromwell a good start would be to watch the 1970 film "Cromwell" staring Richard Harris and Sir Alec Guiness. It is beautifully filmed and an absolute treat although it does have some historical inaccuracies. A bit like the video you have just reacted to. 😉 My favourite line is early on when Cromwell says "A war? A CIVIL War!?". Brilliant stuff. 👍

You should look at the Magna Carta which was the first written laws in Europe, king John was forced to sign then in 1215, also it was used as a kind of template for the American constitution. Very interesting. Charles has just announced he will use the St Edwards Crown for his Coronation in2023.

Well, I'm a Brit and I learned a lot, so thank you. There's a good film, made in 1970 called 'Cromwell' which is available on KZbin. It has some big names playing the main roles. If you watch and enjoy that, another good British history film, from about the same time, is 'A man for all seasons'. Again, big names and features our other famous Cromwell, Thomas Cromwell, in the reign of Henry VIII.

Lindsay Holliday always does a brilliant job of talking about history, I love watching all her programmes! I must admit that I don’t know a lot about British history, only as it pertains to my family, then I’m fascinated! Facts go in my ears and back out again, my memory has become much worse as I’ve become older! I’m fascinated by what you’ve learned, and enjoy watching, not just what you are, but your reaction as well.

The Crown Jewels would have been a lot older if Oliver Cromwell hadn’t flogged the originals off during the English Revolution. And he sold Charles I’s art collection. We’d have had loads more significant works. Instead other crown heads bought them cheap. A fire sale.

The Crown of Princess Blanche, also called the Palatine Crown or Bohemian Crown, is the oldest surviving royal crown known to have been in England, and probably dates to 1370-80. Only two crowns survived - the crown of Margaret of York and the Crown of Princess Blanche, because they were used by the women for their weddings in Europe and had thus been taken out of England before the Civil War. Today, the crown is displayed in the treasury of the Munich Residenz, Germany. The crown they use in inauguration was actually created in 1937.

King John was on route from Bishops Lynn, now known as Kings Lynn in Norfolk to Newark on Trent in Nottinghamshire. The short cut across The Wash was on marshland, the area is flat fenland (not as the photo showed). Many studies of the area over many years have now lead experts to believe the Crown Jewels King John lost are located in a field between the town of Long Sutton and village of Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire. King John was taken ill in October 1216, having suffered an attack of dysentery, and he died at Newark, Nottinghamshire, most likely on 18 or 19 October. My Dad spent many hours digging his garden in hope of finding the jewels 😂

“Pilfered” - I love how sometimes some Americans twist the story and don’t take time to research and upload the truth. Whatever is on KZbin or whatever is believed by many. It’s irresponsible. Most of the famous jewels were first to the king or queen. Like Meghan’s friends this week, similarly, they’ve forgotten about William Wilberforce and the fact that Britain initiated the end of the slave trade. The slave trade is something every British child learns about at school as an example of how past deeds are horrible. However, as a nation, we’ve only just finished paying off compensation in 2015 to the slave owning families so that they would release they’re slaves without being out of pocket. The government of the time took out a massive loan to bring the slave trade to an end. It doesn’t wipe out the past, but we’re not as bad as we’re described. Much of the photos purporting to be of Buckingham Palace, featuring what’s now seen as offensive, is not a royal,palace at all.

Prior to 1500's England was Roman Catholic. Henry VIII wanted to have his first marriage annulled (divorce did not exist), which he had to ask the Pope to do. After years of waiting it was eventually suggested to him that the solution was to split from Rome, set up the "Church of England" with him as its head. As head of this new church he was able to get his annulment granted. So I assume the orb was a symbol of his place as head of his own church. As an additional benefit of creating the "Church of England", Henry was able to plunder a lot of the land and monies the Roman Catholic church possessed in England.
