The Blacker the Berry is such an incredible song. I don't even have anything else to say but it's just so perfect.

It's a fantastic song. The feature on the album really threw in a vibe I was not expecting at all.

One of my favorite things about this album's narrative is Kendrick's stubbornness when it comes accepting that he's not that rich, famous and ''ahead of the game'' person he depicted himself as on Wesley's Theory, King Kunta and Hood Politics. Like he says in the poem, in those songs he was trying to convince himself how good he was and the stripes that he earned, even though deep down he knew that wasn't the case. And then hearing events like How Much a Dollar Cost, Blacker the Berry and Momma slowly change his perception of himself is so fascinating to me. Then it all comes together at the end of ''i'' in which he embraces his newfound self, deciding to be an inspirational leader for his people. Kinda like his mom said at the end of ''Real''. Correct me if I'm wrong tho lol this is my own interpretation after listening to it many many times Great reaction btw really enjoyed your commentary 👍
@lusciousluie Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. In Momma, he was saying how much he knew like you said, and realized that he knew nothing and How Much A Dollar Cost completely set him back. The grouping of songs across this album is so complex and feed into one another, I'm actually thinking of all the pairings there could possibly be. Even across multiple albums! I don't think you're wrong. Your perception is your perception and what you know is what you know. You've given me some new information to work my own perception out. Thanks for the feedback!

Glad you gave an in-depth analysis of this album. It's a lot to absorb, especially on the first listen. This is without a doubt one of the greatest concept albums of all time. Each song carries its own story and perspective and they all connect in such powerful ways. Will never get tired of this album.

Such a mind blowing listen. There is just a profound quality to Kendricks writing that very few in the game can match. Even to this day i'm still catching new little nuances and getting different perspectives on it. I don't think any musician has made me rethink my life as many times as he has through telling his story.
@lusciousluie Жыл бұрын
it absolutely is! the blend of different genres and his transitions from different emotion is insane. I'm blown away by each and every song.

Momma is about the first time he went to Mother Africa. This happened in real life. When you listen to it from that perspective, it makes so much sense. He didn’t know sh*t until he came home.

Loved this reaction, thanks Luie! I think The Blacker the Berry is a really key moment in the album. The bomb he drops at the end about him questioning the authenticity of his own blackness because he killed another black man (whether that's factual or metaphorical) due to gang activity really expresses why the hypocrisy he mentions is eating him up so much. This, along with "u", is one of the darkest points in the album and really makes the brightest points like the choruses of "alright" and "i" feel that much more poignant.
@lusciousluie Жыл бұрын
Thank you! The Blacker the Berry is the song I think I had the least clear vision for because it was so out of my realm. I couldn't come up with too many thoughts to do it justice. But I did noticed that bomb drop, I didn't want to make any insinuations in the review. But the message was definitely received! I love the peaks and valleys this album goes.

Amazing reaction, man! I love how you dig deep on the meaning of the songs (which is fundamental with kendrick's discography) but also give yourself the time to feel the song and it's meaning. You totally should check out "deathconsciousness" album by Have a Nice Life. This album, in my opinion, is the most emotional musical experience you can witness. It's considered as "the most depressing music ever", and thats definitely on point. It's pure emotions and outstanding piece of art.

What a great album. Smashed it as always Luie. What you said about a lot of things being left unmentioned when discussing and analysing music, and your appreciation for a platform in which you can truly explore the nuance with a community really resonated with me. I've been thinking of making my own channel for a year or two now but certain life circumstances have been preventing that from really being a possibility. maybe some day :)

It’s impossible to pick a favorite song on this album, every single song except you ain’t gotta lie and hood politics(I love them both btw) has been my favorite song on the album at one point. As of rn I think I’ve settled with the opinion that the best song in the context of the album is u. I never heard anything like this song, I feel as if u is a HUGE turning point in the album. One thing I got out of u that I feel is super important is Kendrick seeing that despite all the influence and power he has gained he was still powerless in helping those that really mattered. The people that were there before the fame, those who had viewed him as a hero and trusted him before he blew up. This paired with the fact that he has been misusing his power out of vengeance while his loved ones suffered. Breaks him down to the point where Lucy can approach him and promise him a fix. he’s so broken and feels so powerless in the face of those closest to him he is willing to consider Lucy and listen.

Just some more background on Momma, in the last verse Kendrick is talking about his first world tour in South Africa where he met a young boy. The conversation put into perspective how narrow is world view truly is. Though he has gone from Compton to Hollywood, he is still thinking in an American Perspective. Even though Black people have been historically opressed in America, the conditions for Black people today are much better than the conditions for the Africans whose labor makes American life possible. Although he advocates for all Black people to visit Africa, he is still disturbed by the interaction and turns back to music Edit: It continues onto the next line where he meets a homeless man at a South African Gas Station
@lusciousluie Жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining that. It makes sense when he explains everything he knew from an American perspective but didn't about anything else in the world. And that even in the conditions he grew up in, it was nothing compared to what he saw.

D’Angelo’s Voodoo is a quintessential lover’s album I swear. It’s slow grilled mined from the wettest soil neo-soul. Also Solange Knowles has A Seat At The Table. That’s a really good album too but it’s got broader thematic ambitions about black womanhood. It’d fit quite comfortably in that “Self Love” lane.

"Brown skinned but your blue eyes tell me your mama can't run" is more saying that her mother was also a slave who was r*ped by, most likely, her owner. A single line paints such a sad movie, and it's also so beautiful the way he does it
@Qyshawn Жыл бұрын
You hit Blacker the Berry pretty well. The beginning is really referring to black culture, people love black peoples dances, music, style and try to take it but refuse to acknowledge the black experience or their contribution and try to show it as wrong. Most popular music has it origins from black people. Country, Rock, Techno, etc is derived or made by black people and popularized by others then become "their" music. But yeah the pride that comes with being black and how we are treated and pitted against eachother is also such a struggle.

I remember* i remember you was conflicted* I REMEMBER* REMEMBER* DUMBASS misusing your influense sometimes i did the same abusing my power full of resentment, redentment that turned into a deep depression found myself screaming in a hotelroom, i didnt wanna self destruct, the evils of lucy was all around me, so i went running for answers, until i came back home, but that didnt stop survivors guilt, going back and forth trying ti convince myself the stripes i earned, or maybe how A 1 my foundation was, but while my loved ones was fighting a continius war back in the city, i was entering a new one, a war that was based on apartheid and discrimination, made me wanna go back to the city and tell my homies what i learned, the word was respect, just because you wore a different gsng color than mine, doesnt mean i cant respect you as a black man, forgetting all the pain and hurt we caused each other in these streets, if i respect you, we unify and stop the enemy from killing us, but i dont know, im no mortal man, maybe im just another ni**a. I didnt google this btw

Almost been a year so idk you might already have found about this but Momma is actually about a time Kendrick went to his original Motherland - he went to Africa. That explains the line where he mentions a child that resembles him and when that child says that he knew his language, American school system just made him forget it. Idk I always found that so mindblowingly amazing. The last line as well, when “mother “ asks him to bring his homies with him, to bring him to the lands they belonged to

In Complexion the line "Brown skinned, but your blue eyes tell me your mama can't run." means the Mother of the Mixed girl he's sneaking to meet is a Black enslaved woman who could not fend off the sexual aggression of their Slave Master. Trust the 'Mother isn't white'. Kendrick is speaking to implied Grape of female slaves by their owners. C'mon man. It's all in the context of the song plus ya' know history.

Just got I to your channel. You're reacting to so many of my favorite albums of all time. Liketbis, Demon Days, Ants From Up There, Orange. Whoever is in your corner is giving you some A+ picks. Have you ever listened to the old Pink Floyd records from the 70s? Dark Side Of TheMoon, Wish You Were Here, or Animals? I'll have some others for some future recommendations. But for now. I'll also just suggest Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, Awaken My Love by Childish Gambino, What's Going on By Marvin Gaye, Dragon New Warm Mpuntain I Believe In You by Big Thief.
