There is no singer in my lifetime that can sound better live, no miming or lip sync, her real voice.....and it is better LIVE than in a recording studio! How can that be? Because it is the pure, angelic voice of Karen. No singer can emulate what her voice did. Majestic.

Yes her facial reaction at the end of this song is so tragically telling. It is why there is a touch of melancholy and a haunting feel to her voice in many of her songs. An angel who never saw herself as we all do. Simply heartbreaking.

Thank you for reacting to this song. And yes, she was singing about herself. There's some insight from Richard, and especially from the lyricist, and close friend John Bettis about this song and what it meant to her. Another powerful and rather emotional rendition caught on camera was when she sang it "live" in Dec. 1978 on the Bruce Forsyth Show in London. She has been quoted as saying this song would almost bring her to tears when she sang it because it was her life, and it hit so close to home. Bless the ever gracious and truly beautiful Karen Anne Carpenter. RIP beautiful Angel.

Nice reaction and yes right at the end it's about her and how she is feeling about herself. She was so beautiful and had a lot of love to give I think if she had met the right man.

I can see that it made you tear up, too. Brought tears to many eyes. This song was written for her by her brother and lyricist John Bettis, who knew her best. It was one of her favorites.

Thanks much for reacting to this beautiful song - music by Richard and the lyrics by long time friend/co-writer John Bettis - these lyrics are very sophisticated and literate and a big cut above most, and are simply perfect for the gorgeous - actually, incomparable - voice of Karen - Richard has reported that this was her favorite song and it's easy to see why - it's a composition worthy of her incredible vocal talent - this is the song and the performance that many people have in mind when they say that her singing "stops them in their tracks" and they cease whatever they're doing to listen to her every word, every note - talent totally "off the charts"!

Psyche, thank you for your always perceptive and compassionate commentary especially about the magnificent Karen Carpenter. Her performances overflow with her extraordinary talent, beauty, and humanity. We are so fortunate that she was with us, if only too briefly. Yet she and Richard's peerless musical legacy will live on forever. Their appeal is universal and deservedly so.

Almost everyone who does a reaction video for this song uses this version from the 1976 London Palladium Concert. It is perhaps her best ever version of her own favourite Carpenters song. It says much about her tragic life. If only she could have found someone to love and cherish her as she deserved. Absolutely the best female singer of her generation.

Your remarks provide evidence of your accurate insight and sound feelings. Herb Alpert heard her voice on a demo in 1969 and signed them to A&M records. She received 4 Grammys in the very early and mid 1970s. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. Perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, certainly contralto at least, because her singing commands you to listen, as KC sings in perfect pitch, TO you, not AT you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in ALL her songs as well. (Richard dubbed her harmony lines into her songs). She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Research supports that she was mostly, if not totally, self-taught in voice and drums. I believe you will be further amazed with 'Solitaire', 'This Masquerade', (maybe you already reacted to them ?), and lesser known songs such as; 'A Place To Hideaway', 'I Can Dream Cant I'- written in 1939. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride', and John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her she had a fabulous voice. Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. KC never knew true love. Her few friends included Petula Clark and Dionne Warwick. KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia. [Apologies for most of this is repeated from comments to your reaction to 'For All We Know'] 🙃

Yes it does Paul - not sure why. The good people are taken for fools but one mustn't change and become awful to suit 'the' awful. The good will always outshine the bad! Stay safe, healthy and positive and have a wonderful festive time! 🌹 p.s. thank you for your kind words too, humbly received and appreciated.
