There are many things to see in Wrocław. You have to see the Old Town. The Świdnicka Cellar - Piwnica Świsnicka is located in the basement of the town hall. This is one of the oldest restaurants in Europe (13th century). You should reach Ostrów Tumski - Cathedral Island. An interesting object is the Hala Stulecia - Centennial Hall and its surroundings. There you will find a Japanese Garden but it is probably too cold to visit this place. You will encounter dwarven carvings all over the city. This is a tribute to the Orange Alternative. It was an anti-communist youth movement. Their weapon was humor, and their symbol was a dwarf painted on the walls of houses. In the Wrocław ZOO you will find the Africanarium. This is an oceanarium dedicated to the fauna and flora of Africa. ETC

In fact, Poles are not likely to have a negative attitude towards the world "by definition", they just practice their favorite national sport: complaining. In America, a typical conversation with a friend you meet goes something like this: Hello, how are you? Thank you, everything's fine, what about you? And ok, I had a great week... etc. A Polish quick conversation goes something like this: Hello, how are you? Well, my stomach has been hurting lately, I wanted to go to the doctor, but they only scheduled me for next week... Well, to hell with the health service - but we have to pay taxes! Exactly! And what a high electricity bill I recently received... etc. We're really good at it - but it's more of a facade, a national fun and game, only foreigners may feel a bit confused at the beginning...

We like peace and we don't want anyone to tell us what to do or how to think. In every new situation, we see a threat and come up with worst-case scenarios of how it will unfold, because we remember our history and know what we had to go through to live the way we live now 😉 Complaining is our national sport. We complain when it's warm and there's no rain. We complain when it rains or snows because then we want it to be warm. We complain when someone is interested in Poland... And when no one is interested. We complain when the government gives money to people, because it comes from our taxes and the government has no money of its own... We complain when the government gives nothing, because they have probably already stolen our taxes. Don't try to understand us... 😉

When it comes to movies there are three levels of translation: subtitles, no voiceover. This is typically done in theaters. The so called lector is the person who reads the dialogs. I think this is unique to Poland and typically happens in TV movies. This goes back to Communism, where there were no resources for full movie dubbing and the TV system had no CC. Also, bootleg VHS movies were translated that way. It was easier to do the lector voiceover the subtitles. Today Polish people are just used to this. And of course there is full dubbing, but that is typically done for children movies, Disney and so forth.

8:24. Yes in case of most popular method of translation of movie is Poland "the lector" it is one person, no matter if the character is male or female. It is done in the same monotone voice without any emotions. Also the voice over track is put half a second after the original voice in the movie. Because of this Polish people know original voices of actors not the voiceover people. Also more important because lector is using the monotone voice without emotions and You can hear the original track, after short time Your brain starts to filter out the tone of lector, and it merges the emotions and sound of original voice with translated text from the lector. It may sound weird, but this is how it actually works (one caveat to this is If You don't speak the original language, in other case it may be harder to get used to). Your brain can actually do a lot of things that You don't know or think about. (edit: corrected some grammatical errors)

In Poland, films are translated by a narrator - one person, but this is not a form of DUBBING. The original soundtrack can be heard in the background, including the actors' voices, which are only slightly muted. The narrator seems to translate in real time. This way, after a short while, you don't even pay attention to the narrator if he has good diction. Why do we do this? Well, acting is not only gestures, but also the actor's real voice and diction. The entire soundtrack is part of the filmmakers' work, which also affects the final reception of the film. This is a sign of respect for the entire film crew. Dubbing kills it all and is the stupidest thing you can do to a movie. You lose the original soundtrack, the original lyrics in the actors' native language, the original acting, which is replaced by other actors. However, Piotrek is talking about something else in this skit - about a strange translation of film titles.

Remember this tip and ALWAYS use it. In polish, letter "w" you must always pronounce as english "v". Szumovski. 😊 Exception: sometimes we use english words like very popular "weekend" and then we say it in english way.

About Polish negativity, there is something to it. If you ask Polish person "how are you?' So-so might be the best you get, more likely you'll get to know how much work thaey have or who's sick. We tend to complain a lot, but that's mostly just talk.

Just one wee correction about Polish expats. In commies' times including 80's it was very difficult to get abroad especially to western countries, so even if you wanted you couldn't go away from that commies' shite. I am sure Piotrek referred to later times, when Poland joined the EU in 2004 and later. There are hundreds of thousands of Poles in the UK including myself and my children, whose first language is English (just like Piotrek). Please note the UK was very attractive for Poles as there were only 3 EU countries fully open for Poles after joining the Union (UK, Ireland, Sweden) all other countries had transition period of 3, 5 or even 8 years like for instance Germany 😁 So the later after 2004 the less willing to leave Poland. Indeed younger generations are more positive, however the older ones like mine representing Poles born in 70's are as negative as f... 😆

Standup is pretty big type of comedy in Poland. In bigger scope it replaced previously popular cabaret as being more western type of comedy and because of fact its more cost-effective to perform.

hi this narrative voice in movies in Poland, yes is for all for woman, kids and man but... this is kind a subtitle , you still heard very well what actors saying and over it you heard this voice, so you can enjoy originall actor expression and voice but still understund everything, this is 100 times better than dubbing where known actors have strange sounding voices, like I sayd this is fonical version of subtitles in movie. Oh, I live in Wrocław! I recomend to go on the Market Squere, Neon Gallery, Zoo(Afrykanarium), National Museum and Słodowa Island. And if you want to watch more Polish comedy, you can see kabaret Neonówka "Niebo", KMN "Drzwi", KMN "Rezerwacja telefoniczna" or Potem "Lady in the tower". Everything with English subtitles.

I am a certified marintime radio operator. Despite the things that you have learnt from movies, you do not end your broadcast with "over and out". When you say something over the radio and you exptect somekind of reply you finish your sentence with "over". When you are done with conversation over the radio, you say "out". "Over and out" does not make any sense.

One person saying all the text in polish movies is so called the Lector. It is a remain from the Socialism and remains present as its much cheaper to hire one person than dubbing whole movie with multiple people in the cast of course. It is slowly getting away but can be comonly found across especially before 2010s

Translations of english movie titles into polish always baffles me: example 1) "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" into "Las Vegas Parano" - parano is not even a word in polish language example 2) "Lock, stock and two smoking barrels" into ""Porachunki" - in polish that means the deals beetwen two rival gangs example 3) "Snatch" into "Przekręt" - in polish that means a scam/fraud thank god they left "Pulp fiction" untouched.

"Cześć" was passable, but the other word sounded like "viachiele", which is not even close. There's still a lot to be done here. I noticed that somone mentioned "How to read Polish or something" which is very new video, but it does actually do a good job. So whoever recommended it, I am doubling down on that recommendation.

Yeeeee, more and more Polish words mastered - bravo. This Pole went a bit too far with the translation of the title of the film "Die Hard". The word "szklana" in Polish can have many references and idioms. Poles know very well what this name is about, it is a mental shortcut because literally the name should be "Trap in a Skyscraper", which means that this Pole thinks more of an Englishman than a Pole in translation.

For instance movie title with G.Clooney Three Kings was translted to Złoto Pustyni which means "Gold of Desert". If I don't know a movie language, I just go with subtitles, I can't believe some people prefer voice-over translation. It's terrible. I don't know if it's popular anywhere else, but in Poland you can watch most things with voice-over translation. There are very few cases where it's actually good. One is Trailer Park Boys tv show.
