Only good episode with the weeping angels, imo! Unfortunately, "timey wimey" is gonna have to be the default explanation for anything that doesn't make sense when it's written by Steven Moffat. You kind of have to just go with it and pretend it's clever, otherwise it'll lose most of its entertainment value...

I really hope Helen Raynor gets more credit nowadays, especially since she was a script editor for Moffat's episodes in RTD era-- thank god for her, otherwise those episodes could have been so much worse. Also-- I really like the juxtaposition between this Doctor's reaction to the idea of Daleks changing and the previous Doctor's-- Eccleston's Doctor was so fresh from the Time War, a hardened soldier, coping with the fact that he committed double genocide by pouring all of his hatred and guilt into the very concept of this creature. He was so baffled that a Dalek ever *could* evolve to feel, and Rose shook him out of that dark place and reminded him of his compassion. Even at the end of 'Dalek' he seems to feel genuinely sorry for it, because from a Dalek's perspective it had become a mutated abomination and a failure. And here, though the Cult of Skaro was directly responsible for the loss of Rose, he kept that empathy, and truly started to see Dalek Sec and his creations as a new species that deserved to be saved. Very [chef's kiss] character growth

It's wild that I remember the ending of this episode as one of the most beautiful scenes-- when they're literally just sitting in a gross back alley-- purely because of the way the Doctor describes his home world. It's like I could see Gallifrey myself, and feel all the sadness of losing its beauty, through his words and his face alone. This show can do so much with so little. Beautiful underrated episode.

I like that the start of the season, token "back in time" episodes are usually involving aliens that appear to be closer to supernatural forces, like ghosts and werewolves and witchcraft. It's a fun way of explaining folklore!

There is a movie called "The Lodger" that has been remade a couple of times. In the original 1927 movie and 1944 remake the person upstairs is Jack the Ripper. I don't know about the 2009 remake.

This episode is such a strong one, and a great introduction to Martha-- you're still reeling from Rose and not ready for a new TARDIS passenger, but she's SO smart and SO kind and she jumps RIGHT into step with the Doctor so effortlessly, you can't help but accept her immediately! Martha Jones is one of THE best companions in New Who, hands down.

The thing about the Christmas specials is you have to go in expecting them to be kind of cheesy and fun; it's a holiday special! There's always that little bit of an emotional punch and a tie-in to the broader story, but there does tend to be an extra bit of absurdity to these episodes. It's delightful.

David Tennant is a stage actor who frequently did/does Shakespeare. Monologues are kind of his bread and butter!

As far as I'm aware, the leading theory about Vincent's mental illness is that he had bipolar disorder, which this show represents fairly well. In this show's version of history, he was likely also mildly psychic, which paired very poorly with mental illness and superstitious neighbours.

This episode, weirdly, sums up everything that Doctor Who as a fandom/phenomenon is about. The Doctor brings the most unlikely people together. The cheesy, campy monsters and goofy science fiction is just a playful backdrop to a story about *people.* When someone comes in and tries to play god and make it all too serious, digging and digging at the sci-fi angle, all at the expense of its characters... 👀... it ruins it. Silly and weird episode, sure, but a lot to love about it in retrospect. Doctor Who is less of a show and more of an experience, honestly-- a piece of history and culture that's been shared for 60+ years and doesn't belong solely to any one creator, or writer, or lead actor, or demographic, or generation. It's so far from perfect in so many ways, but it's so special.

The end of this episode just destroys me every single time. Bill Nighy's description of Van Gogh, and Van Gogh hearing it, thanks to the Doctor - it's everything you want from a time travel story, isn't it? A major historical figure, who gets to hear part of his legacy so to speak and how important they wind up being to so many people. And to top it off, it's a very important episode about depression and mental health and the show handled it perfectly most would say. Showing the truth while also trying to explain it so a child could understand it and not be pushed away by fear. Just, terrific stuff. Moffat (and whoever wrote it if it wasn't Moffat himself)) should be very proud of this one.

I don't know how far your in with Classic Who or whether you watched that serial or not but one of the unseen races in this episode River Song mentions is the Drahvins which were a race that appeared in Classic Who from the Hartnell era.

Ah the Pandorica, the Doctor having a more tough challenge when all villains want to get back at him, Rory returns, Amy and if she can remember. River being great as usual. TARDIS brakes again no she is flying it right. This episode feels as big as a S3/4, but more interesting way they scale the threat.
