So cool to see you guys react to Ethel!! She actually writes and produces all her own music, which makes this like 10x more insane, hope to see more of her on the channel!

Florence is her biggest idol and inspiration so that's why it's giving her vibe. They actually are friends now and sometime they perform together. And yes, she has been compared to Lana more. Her album "Preacher's Daughter" is very much compared to Ultraviolence by Lana

This album has LORE I know you guys don’t do albums, so i’m not sure how you wanna listen to her discography. Tbh the meaning of the songs are very intricate and deep and honestly you probably wouldn’t get the full picture without looking it up. I don’t mean that condescendingly, there’s just a lot to it. But also the meaning isn’t everything and I enjoyed your commentary on the production/vocals!

Ethel is a GENIUS. Please listen to her whole album! It tells an incredible story

The chandelier rocking to me is a reference to a line the first song in the album called Family Tree (Intro) that says "Swinging by my neck from the family tree".

Omg guys plsss react more to Ethel's music. She has such beautiful songs and her voice really gets under your skin. A House In Nebraska is one of my favourites and It's over 7 minutes long!! But American Teenager & Western Nights are also really good songs.
@kelseydavenport26118 ай бұрын
This album is a concept album and the Genius notations are helpful if you want the exact story of this Character, but it's also nice to see how people react to the songs without any context of the storyline. If you listen to songs like Ptolemaea or Strangers I would recommend having Genius up to help. Ethel Cain is without a doubt my favorite artist and I am so happy to see you guys explore her work! If I had the money to donate I would recommend western nights or thoroughfare, I really like those two and they have a lot of the fun guitar experiences
@gqrdeniiq8 ай бұрын
the genius annotations are completely bullshit. Hayden said it herself, she has no idea what the hell they're writing on there
@Haydentrudyjones7 ай бұрын
you guys immediately picking up on the cinematic elements of the song! nice work - the album was actually first conceived as a "soundtrack" to a film Hayden/ethel wanted to create but didn't have a budget for, so she learned to produce music from her bedroom and over the course of several years - Preacher's Daughter was born
@tralala18658 ай бұрын
Yall picking up on the flies and horror movie immediately. Yall have to embrace the album because yes. Thoroughfare, this, Gibson girl, ptolomea, and strangers are the iconic ones for me. She writes and produces it all which for me is fantastic cause the music is very emphasized and she plays with the dynamics very well. It should be noted that the album is a concept album not a reflection of her reality. But the lyrics of this one are a lot more interesting when considering that the album is named preachers daughter. There’s a shorter one of this song that opens the album for a little of the first verse starts it but then is different from there. It’s just as good.

@emoryferguson91677 ай бұрын
highly recommend listening to the Preachers Daughter album and reading the genius comments that go along w each song. you get the full story from that that could be easy to miss just listening, this album is like a novel. there is LORE that goes w it that makes it so much more than just an album.
@Haydentrudyjones7 ай бұрын
also! as far as meaning, her lyricism contains a lot of nuance- branching meanings. But the central meaning to Family Tree, is addressing her roots in the church, her upbringing, family/generational trauma, and religious trauma, and asking forgiveness for your own "sins" and the mistakes of your parents and theirs. A later song 'Ptolemaea' in this album contains the lyric "Blessed be the daughters of Cain, bound to suffering eternal through the sins of their fathers committed long before their conception."

omgggg ethel cain mention!!! Just fyi in case folks ask you to react to more of her stuff - be very careful. Her work is absolutely fucking stunning. Life-changing. World-shaking. AND it's also very triggering/disturbing to a lot of people if they are not prepared for it. Particularly don't recommend listening to anyone suggesting that you listen to Ptolemaea, Strangers, Hard Times, or even Sun Bleached Flies to be honest without having preparation and context. A quick spoiler-filled summary of this album, Preacher's Daughter: a concept album about Ethel Cain, a young trans woman from the deep south in the early 90's who has undergone loss, religious and familial trauma, abusive relationships, etc. She runs away from her hometown after yet another traumatic experience and a personal revelation about her own abuse, hitches a ride with a guy that she convinces herself is her new love (unreliable narrator moment), and he ends up drugging her, pimping her out, murdering her, and eventually cannibalizing her body while she watches it happen from heaven and reflects on her life. It's incredibly cinematic, and she is writing two accompanying albums that will further explore the character's family tree, as well as novelizations of each one. The lore is INSANE. I could write a 50 page thesis on how this album changed my life and perfectly encapsulated generational female trauma. If y'all want to dive into her more and get more prep/context to do that, I would be happy to provide (I've done it for several react channels at this point lmao), or I'm sure @headinthewall who has already commented here would be happy to as well!

This song reminds me of Trent Reznor's How To Destroy Angels - especially their song The Spaces in Between. I love a song with drone, distortion and an uncomfortable message.

This album is essentially a movie, the storyline is insane and disturbing. It's FANTASTIC. you should listen to it as a whole. Picking up on the murder vibes is not wrong... think Jeffrey dahmer. The flies are there for a reason throughout this album

Absolutely the track to react to in order to see if you’re into it enough to check out the rest of the album, but as concept-albums go, I highly recommend listening to the whole album, (only listening to one song tends to remind me of when people only listen to one song off Pink Floyd’s The Wall-usually, “Comfortably Numb”.) “I said Florence…” => I’m like, “and you were correct, pls don’t say what you’re about to say.” “…Lana…” => 🤦🏻♀️ “They said it.” 😂😂😂 Seriously tho, this track is the one I use as a barometer for people to see if they’ll vibe with the whole album, even tho the whole album is not like this song, it’s sort of the core or the heart of the album as a whole. If you don’t want to check out the full album yet, check out something earlier like “Crush” or “Inbred.”
