Also, it’s part of a concept album about a woman who grew up in an abusive and religious household. She runs away and ends up in a series of toxic and abusive relationships and here, her abuser tries to unalive her. She is drugged and sees/imagines that he is possessed by a demon who has been hunting her.

what happens is that he does drug up and unalive her, the next track August Underground is her final moments. and he ends up cannibalizing her hence the lyrics "you love blood too much but not like i do"

This song captures how it feels to hear a noise outside, hope it’s just an animal, but you look out there and it’s the man who’s been stalking you for years. The scream is the most cathartic thing ever. I love it! Oddly enough it becomes very easy to hear the lyrics when you watch a lyric video.

⚠️Warning: Unneccesarily long comment incoming⚠️ So happy you gave this artist a chance!! So for a little background on the artist, Ethel Cain is the art project/stage name of Hayden Anhedönia, she’s a solo artist from Perry, Florida who writes, produces and performs all her own music. Her debut album “Preacher’s Daughter” is a concept album that introduces “Ethel Cain” as a character and follows her as she grapples with religious and intergenerational trauma, and her abusive upbringing. This album is the first in a planned trilogy that will tell the stories of Ethel, her mother, and her paternal grandmother, to depict how trauma can be passed down through generations and what happens when these cycles aren’t broken. At this point in the plot of the album she has run away from home and been kidnapped, this song depicts her murder in a state of drug-induced confusion, (“Daddy’s left and Mama won’t come home”, her father died 10 years before the events of the album, and she could not be further from home). The male voice in the song is actually her own voice pitched down. The way I interpret it is that the voice in the outro is meant to be Death itself “I am no good nor evil, simply I am, and I have come to take what is mine”. Hayden is notorious for genre-bending, and this is her first song to enter any sort of metal territory, she has stated that there will be more like this on the upcoming albums, so I’m super excited for that!! To get the storyline it should probably be listened to in order, but if you just wanted to give any of her other songs a go “Family Tree”, “Thoroughfare”, and “Strangers” are some of my favourites! The album actually gets even more disturbing after this, believe it or not!!

This was the first song by Ethel I listened as well! She immediately stole my heart. I love disturbing songs, kind of like how we love horror movies. What you said about pain is very real, songs like this are great to process feelings I can’t bring myself to do it outside of art. When “what fear a man like you” part started, I was in tears without realizing. But this song is cathartic to me (especially as someone who has gone thru SA). Ethel is master in storytelling. Thank you for such a genuine reaction and for reading the lyrics!!!

Music is emotion. This feels like trauma put in music. If you can do that as a musician, you are very capable. Started reading up on the artist, given the fact that she is a young artist with a interesting life story (to put it mildly) I think we might see a lot of thought-provoking stuff from her.

Has a very strong Chelsea Wolfe vibe. Her voice reminds me of the singer from Pencey Sloe. Really disturbing atmosphere. this song always gives me the creeps.. really really love it tho… to get the song completely you have to listen to the ‘preacher’s daughter’ album and read some song annotations on genius (there’s also fan made pdf file somewhere on the internet that fans of ethel made to collect all the information about the lore of the album, since it’s conceptual) and speaking of the creeps, i get the same feeling from diamanda galás’ and lingua ignota’s music.. their voices and instrumentals are just INSANE…

If you like this, I recommend reacting to Family Tree(Intro) by Ethel Cain(make sure it is the intro, not the actual song also named Family Tree on the same album), Strangers by Ethel Cain, and Sun Bleached Flies by Ethel Cain. It would mean the world to me to see you react to any of these :D The whole album(with the song you listened to), Preacher's Daughter, is the chronological tale of an average American woman who was raped, murdered, and canabalized. Family Tree(Intro) sets the scene and background and is the first song. The song you listened to, Ptolemaea, is when Ethel gets drugged and killed by her 'lover', Isaiah. Strangers is near the end; it is when she is being canabalized(with this context, the song will make a lot more sense). Sun bleached Flies is reminiscing on before all of this took place. The whole album is great but these are the 3 that really stand out to me... House in Nebraska is also very good as well. Nonetheless, the album is a beautiful and poetic ballad navigating religion, sexual abuse, and corruption in religious churches. I really recommend an album reaction but you can do whatever you'd like.

Pain.. desperation. I felt in my chest. I could not make all the words out but the ones that did come thru were important. As you I held by breath in parts. I'm trying to comment before I hear yours. I had tears welling and I didn't know why, the music was so.. desperate is the only word I can come up with, or dread.. pain.. generational pain. It will be interesting to see what you thought. Be cautious with this song is all I can say, and certainly it needs ♥ and

This is incredible! It took me back to the days when I listened to Lycia and bands like that. They would make soul crushing music that sounded good. As for poetic lyrics, I haven't really figured it out, but it does seem to imply some rape maybe, and the phrase "blessed be" is a greeting that wiccans use.

TBH, it’s like ONLY listening to “Empty Spaces” from Pink Floyd’s The Wall 🤷🏻‍♀️ listening to the whole album helps, (but, you also should probably have the lyrics handy, like so many concept albums the story isn’t always super clear-Though in the case of this album I think the themes are usually crystal clear.) You could also listen to this song along with the next two [instrumental] tracks, “August Underground” & “Televangelism,” because they flow from one to the next to the next and serve as a sort of act in the story. “Sun Bleached Flies” & “Strangers” are a bit of a denouement. Nonetheless, 🙏🏼☺️ Godspeed.
