They get so deep in the groove on this song it's almost scary - Bonham absolutely hammering away at that poor drum kit, Jimmy putting out one of the most wicked 4-note riffs ever and mixing it with beautiful melodies, John laying down the beat, rock solid as ever and Robert's vocals, in absolute top form. Damn those guys were good!

John Bonham plays with four drumsticks hence the name four sticks said they had to do it over and over and over cuz it was so hard for him to do he finally got it and was glad they was done with it

Bonham is playing drums with 4 sticks and they’re heavy compressed and in 5/8 and 6/8 time, and also overly debated that Plants voice was sped up, and was only ever performed live once.

This song has such a lovely, hypnotic, swirling riff that contains a little of Robert's mysticism in the lyrics by mentioning "strong shields and lore" and "boots of those who march...through the roads of time so long ago". It was difficult to record and was the song where the band got frustrated and Bonzo started on the Little Richard Keep a Knockin song and out flowed the song Rock and Roll instead. Bonzo only played two takes; it was difficult to perform due to odd time signatures; the drums were compressed so that also made it difficult to mix. They worked hard to get it recorded. It's a bit of a "sleeper/deep cut" for some but I think it's a great song.

It’s no wonder they rarely played this live. That drum groove has to be hard to duplicate.

There's a stellar live version of this from Copenhagen. They only did it once or twice live. Roberts voice could knock down walls!!

John Bonham did play with four sticks! Two sticks in each hand! And Jimmy had his signature odd tuning on this song which people thinks are keyboards!

Amazing bass work on this as well. So completely overlooked. I think Jonsey plays a Meltotron on this as well

Adam And The Ants once had two drummers and two drum sets playing live . They had a distinct sound based upon African Burundi drumming . During one performance the drummers could be seen tossing their drumsticks from one to the other behind Adam's head .

Actually they had it done in the studio on the second take. People spread myths like it took forever and it was so hard for Bonham. No he was just messing around a bit in the warm up prior to recording doing a drum bit from "Rock & Roll" before hopping into this. Yes 2 sticks in each hand, so what. The constant comments that the actual drumming was sooo hard for Bonham is totally ridiculous. Did he loose time even for a second from beginning to end ? Hell no. This is Bonzo's he owns it, he made it up and everyone is still trying to figure out exactly how he did it and try to teach it based on guesses. It's the drum thunder god people, this was absolutely not "so" hard for Bonham. The title of the song is for John for Pete's sake. Any serious Bonham fan knows it, hell he could've aced it with six sticks !
