I can understand that a mother would do anything for her son... However, she could give him advices and try to tell him to do the right thing and tell him she would be at his side... It's not what à "normal" mother would tell her son.... It's disgusting and disturbing... What his son did to his fiancee doesn't seem to shock Roberta (it's like "you killed her, don't worry I will help you to dispose of her body"; In Roberta's world, a murder is something normal...

I have three sons, the oldest is 25. I have never in my life as a mother used any words like this toward my children. I am, admittedly, a bit of a helicopter parent, due to losing their dad when they were young. Yet, I have never told my sons “if you’re in jail I’ll bake a cake with a file”. This is not anything in any children’s book I’ve ever seen. This whole letter is creepy af. If she wrote this before they left, hell it looks like they planned her murder, or she’s the most unlucky person on the planet that it turns out her kid murdered his girlfriend after she wrote this. 🙄

Exactly...she clearly said in her attempt to be a writer( fail) that she'll do anything for him..no matter what he did( planned to do) and her undying love for him was eternal. Laundries defense about the letter not being any way in connection to the murder is only their say...not going to admit it. Up to a jury to decide. Coincidences don't just occur.. premeditation? Did her psychotic son tell her his plans? He most surely called her right after he ended Gabbys life... I can't believe a son comes home with his gf van, no gf, charges her bank card, and nobody says anything to the Petitos?? She lived with this family...not an aquaintance....they trusted these parents. What a betrayal... Personally, I think that whole Laundrie family are mentally ill. If this was reversed..Gabby came home without Brian, used his bank card, and Petitos said nothing.. would they feel the same? No matter how deep u love your child, morals can't be eliminated. Legal or not, she had a moral obligation to tell Gabbys loved ones what happened. She could still love her son through the consequences for ending a life. Accountability is so vital in today's society. BL was never accountable it seems...legally or morally. Accountability Responsibility is learned..observed. They failed as parents..just loving your child unconditionally is not enough.

This is the response of a conniving mother who knows her son murdered someone. She immediately plans his escape from responsibility. She chooses to be an accomplice in hiding the body, knowing he is likely to be found alive, and put in prison. She then future plans for his escape. No one writes this to an innocent person. She also implicates herself admitting she plans on breaking laws to prevent her son's accountability. This is a criminal family imho.

I find it HIGHLY suspicious that in the beginning of the letter and her FIRST examples she writes to him about her love is literally 1. If he were to go to jail and her baking a cake with a blade in it and 2. Disposing a body with a shovel and garbage bags... This is very telling because typically the beginning of a letter, you're going to set the scene for the reader to understand what you are telling them. Also, the fact that the "jail" and "disposing a body" were her FIRST examples, highly suggests those things were at the forefront of her mind, for those to be the first things that come to mind... Especially because those are not typically the first things that come to mind, if at all, when thinking of proving your love to your child. This letter, plus what happened to Gabby and the way they acted when everything went down, is way too much of a coincidence for me to be comfortable with it.

@@heidigordon1868 Thats a giant assumption on your part. Think about what that entails on the mom's part? Just so you know son, if you killed Gabby I wouldnt care and would help you evade punishment so wink wink when you are alone with her in the van killing her would nt be such a bad idea. After all thats why you are going on this trip with her, an elaborate scheme between me and you to murder Gabby and get away with it😉. Do you know how absurd that sounds? And he killed himself after so it makes that theory even more ridiculous. Whats plauaible is that the Petito lawyer is just using this letter to try to make Brian's mother look liable for Gabby's murder so they can get money from his family.

This letter is VERY weird - I don't know when it was written, but I do believe that the Laundries knew Bryan killed Gabbie. Their son left on what was supposed to be a long trip with his fiance. He comes back, in her car, without her and her parents are begging to know where she is... There is no way that any normal parent wouldn't be demanding to know what happened - Even if they are so obsessed they promise to rip out their own guts if he hates them. They knew and they could have just kept silent and not offered "hope for Gabbie to be reunited" with her family, and been okay. They didn't. Somewhere along the way this family lost their moral compass...

That’s being very generous. It’s more than weird and unrealistic she wrote this without knowing he killed her. What mom writes to their son this way? We’re supposed to believe she wrote “If you’re in jail, I’ll bake you a cake and hide a file inside”, and if “if you’ve killed someone, I’ll help you bury the body”, and “burn after reading” as a normal mother-son note of encouragement before he killed Gabby!!? And it’s just a coincidence he did kill someone, disposed of her body, and still had this note with him when he killed himself?

At the very least, she suspected Gabby's murder. It also exemplifies an incredibly disfunctional parent and her relationship to her child. She infers no healthy boundaries. She infers her child has no responsibilities. Should he merely say "jump," she will ask "how high?!" She infers Brian can do no wrong in her eyes. This is an enabled relationship smothered in unhealthy adoration for her child. I can only imagine what Gabby endured. Complete disfunctionality.

I have never spoken of this before, when I was younger and would stay with my fiance at his mom's house (yes he still lived with mom), you had to come through his room to get to the main part of the house if you used the back door. Anyway we would be sleeping and she would slam that door hard. Well I dyed my hair blond and she didn't know it. And she shut that door quietly that night. So glad I got away from them because he turned out to be very abusive. And the longer I stayed the worse it got. He never did quit abusing me. It was quite a challenge getting away from him.

Same. I have 3 adult sons and a daughter...but it OPENED with a whole scenario about hiding and burning a body and jail....that means that was weighing very heavily on her mind and heart when she put pen to paper. My 24yr old son and I were just talking about this. He apologized to me, because I was a follower of their travels and Gabby well before this all happened and I started saying things before she disappeared. We are from a brutally violent past and I feel and spot things very quickly. He said (my son) to me today, you have written us letter or cards, even posted online of your devotion and love to us individually. You did everything to protect us, and raise us in love, safety and help us become good individuals in society. You would NEVER says you'd hide a body for us, help us escape authorities or "burn after reading"! I'm sorry mom that I thought you were one sided on this and I do now believe you that he did it, his parents hid everything possible and maybe helped and that she helped him escape faking his death. I was shocked, because my son had always said it was just an accident but he handled it wrong in fear and that his parents were not in on it...and I was adamant about it being opposite. My son said he has been rewatching some of the coverage, especially the search and was like, there's now no way I don't believe, with this letter in her words, that he is alive and well living off grid somewhere...maybe another country, maybe our own. They come from law enforcement backgrounds. Her working for high ups...NOPE I do not believe she wouldn't move heaven and earth to hide him alive!!! She'd never let him go off and kill himself in a swamp!! Nope! This whole thing between Band his mom has grossed me out since the beginning! Now there's some solidarity to it.

Over the years I have seen parents lie cheat and steal to protect their children. You see it everyday . To me, what Roberta wrote in her letter indicates very clearly that she would go to any length to protect her son, even if he needed a shovel and bags in order to hide a body. I think that this letter was written after Brian returned home without Gabby, or perhaps he may have contacted his mother saying he would be coming home without her etc. Roberta knew that her son was not in a good place, and she wanted him to know that, no matter what his circumstances were, that she would come to his rescue because their bond was that strong. I think she intended for him to actually “burn” the letter so that it would not be found by anyone. I think the jury will find that this letter proves that Roberta might well have “hid” from the Petito family the fact that their daughter was missing and possibly deceased. I think that Brian did not burn the letter because he wanted to keep something sentimental and close to his heart. He was on the verge of ending his life when nothing would have mattered to him. He likely never considered how it could be used after his death. It’s also possible he did not even read the letter.

Same. I think she knew he had to leave and may not have known he was gonna off himself necessarily, but she knew he HAD to leave if he were gonna have any chance at all, as she was watching how huge this had become outside their home and throughout the country as the cops were gonna take after him ASAP. So I think she knew what he did and knew he was leaving and knew his only 3 options were to run and stay on the run for life, or get caught by LEOs and go to prison, or to do what he ended up doing.. the cowardly thing.. taking his own life... So she was basically giving him a goodbye letter in a sense, knowing that any of the 3 options he had meant she wouldn't be seeing him much, or ever again at all.. so she wanted him to know the depths of her love for him, and that she stood by him no matter what option he chose... Sayin she would help bury the body if necessary, as I'm not sure they had found Gabby body quite yet.. also let him know that if he was on the run she would essentially do anything to help him or see him or at least know that she was with him in heart even from across the world, so to speak.. and letting him know that if he got caught she would be there for him in prison and do anything to help him that was necessary there as well.. She pretty much covered how she felt about him and what he had done to Gabs, and elaborated on the lengths she'd go to to be there for him and support him in each and all of his 3 options, and that she loved him no matter what, even tho he killed Gabby. A "Goodbye Son, I love you and I have your back always and forever, no matter what" letter... It's quite disturbing IMO.. all about her and her son's feelings and love, while dismissing Gabby's literal loss of her whole life and HER families feelings through the whole time period... What is standing out about this letter, apart from its overall creepiness, is that bit is such an over the top attempt to convey how much she loves him & would nvr abandon him. A drawn out profession of love like that is done to assure Brian that no matter what heinous thing he’s done, she will be by his side & he will nvr loose her love. It wasn’t just said, “Son, I love you & will always love you no matter what”. It was meant to convey that anything bad he did or might have done wouldn’t impact her devotion to him. She knew he killed Gabby.

JB, I believe that Roberta knew what Brian was going to do to himself. As a Mom, she wanted to pour her heart out to him but also knew someone could find that letter. She carefully crafted her words with quotes and Bible verses to say things in code.

If she wrote that months before, it seems unlikely that Brian would have retained that one letter for so many months even after his trip, a murder and even stranger that he would think to pack it while going on the run.

Sorry…I don’t believe for a second that “Burn after Reading” meant anything other than she wanted him to burn it after reading it so no one else could ever see what she wrote. And I love my children….and I would also express my love for my children even if they committed a horrible act….I would want them to know that I would visit them in prison as much as allowed and to serve their time and I would still be loving them…but I would never write that I would help hide a body or get new guts or any of that weird stuff she was saying. This seems to be a coded letter….that she’s letting him know she will help him cover up and hide what he did so he could avoid prison….in my opinion. It just feels like she’s speaking in code while trying to make it sound like she’s just being “poetic”. If she did indeed give this to him before they left on the trip….then it almost sounds like she knew what he intended on doing and she was letting him know she would help him hide everything. Of course there’s no way we will be able to know for sure if she gave it to him before he left or gave it to him after knowing Gabby was missing. It’s just very weird to speak with your child in this manner and with the words she chooses.

Creepy AF! What mom writes to their son this way? We’re supposed to believe she wrote “If you’re in jail, I’ll bake you a cake and hide a file inside”, and if “if you’ve killed someone, I’ll help you dispose of the body”, and “burn after reading” as a normal mother-son note of encouragement!!? And that had nothing to do with the fact he had, in fact, killed his gf??

he killed Gabby, contacted his mom about it, then she wrote this letter to him and gave it to him when he arrived home - the letter clearly infers that his mom will stand by him no matter what he has done - heck, she'd bring a file in a cake to the jail for him; bring a shovel and garbage bags (garbage is an interesting choice instead of PLASTIC bags) to help bury a body - If i was on the jury, this letter is definitely a support letter AFTER the fact. The miles and miles apart line - i think indicates she knows he's gone far far away to escape punishment - as in out of the country; knowing they won't be able to speak or see each other again - THAT is why he would have to burn the letter That whole family is disturbing

Sounds like a goodbye letter to me! Having raised 4 boys and one girl. I can really see that if I knew my son was going to take his life, many things in this letter I could see as a goodbye from a mother to a son! Some of it sounds more for a partner than a son but if I'd have to say, I'd say this was a goodbye letter! Gabbie was already gone, so she was telling him if you had wanted to hide the body she the mother would have showed up with a shovel and trash bag. If he went to jail she would have done anything to get him out. I feel like some of it was metaphorical and/or hypothetical. But definitely a goodbye letter in my opinion.

This is a very creepy letter. I couldn’t see my mother or father writing this to me. “Hey, keep the faith we love you no matter what,” sure…but this is very specific and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Heck, most parents will tell their children if you go to jail you’re sitting in there, we’re not hawking out house.

I think the fact that the mother only points out what she would do to help protect him if he were to be in trouble of some sort, and doesn't just simply give an appology or say how proud she is of her son, is proof enough that this was never intended as a reparitive letter to save their mother/son relationship or that it was written before Brian & Gabby went off on their trip...surely there would have been some mention of that?

"Show up with a shovel" is alliteration, which is also used earlier in the letter - "what we do or where we go or what we say." The "if you/I will" phrasing does match the way 'The Runaway Bunny' is written. And the references to bringing a shovel to bury the bodies, and baking a cake with a file in it to get you out of prison are tongue in cheek way of expressing ones loyalty to friends or family that has been around at least since I was a kid. Probably even longer. Under any other circumstances, I don't see how anyone could see the letter as anything other than a Mom expressing her love to a son that has grown up and is leaving her behind as he moves on with his life as an adult. It references the bond they've had throughout his childhood. All that said, It's very inconvenient in the timing. I don't know that there's really a way to determine if the letter was really written before, or if it was after. And not really sure it matters all that much. The Laundrie parents both knew he had come home with Gabby's van, and without Gabby. And refused to respond at all to Gabby's parents, or cooperate with police or anything. It seems like they should be held accountable for that.

This is such a strange letter to give/send your child. Especially if it’s just a random or every day letter. This is the type of letter you send someone, after something very significant happens. Or maybe when you know something significant is going to happen. It’s very strange all around.

To "bring" suggests that she will bring it for him to do the dirty work; to "show up" with it, leaves room for her to help him with the dirty work.

On the envelope she wrote "Burn after reading" - she didn't want the letter found. It's pretty evident that this was written after Gabby's death. No rational mother would ever express their love for their child like that and no rational family would harbor a murderer and deny helping the Petito's find their missing child. Absolutely SHAMELESS!
