The part of this video that always gets me is in the flashback where he opens his hand to reveal the dog tags. I've been trained as a Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (a member of the military that works with the families of military deceased) and initial notifications are part of the duty. Anyone who's ever done next-of-kin notification has those moments seared into their memory.

No matter who sings it .... this song gets me every time. My brother (not real, but close enough) Bill C was killed right next to me in Baghdad .... I grabbed him and fell with him. It took me a bit to do what was needed ..... shock in combat will get you. It will make you pause. I grabbed all his personal shit off of him and one dog tag. Then went on with the mission. Long story short, the dog tag went to HQ for proof of KIA. I kept the personal stuff. Two years later (more like 15 months, after two tours in Afghanistan, when I got home) I went to Alaska, to his home and spent a week or so with his wife and kids. I gave to his wife what I took off of him and spent a couple of days telling his daughters what a hero their dad was. The emotions were EPIC. To this day .... 27 years later .... it still haunts me. I visit them when I can ..... about every 2-3 years. I really miss my bro.

If music didn't touch our hearts, nobody would listen to it. Good music - the lyrics, the chords, the feel - often expresses our thoughts and feelings in ways that we can't explain. I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again, thank you for keeping your raw emotions in your videos and not editing out the sniffles and tears.

I'm 55 years old & I'll say this. Tears on this song are not only allowed, they are required! Vince Gill wrote this for both his own brother and Keith Whitley, both died far too soon. This song gets me every single time. As a veteran it hits especially hard and poignant. The original version was Vince Gill, Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. The most moving version is when they reunited and sang it for country legend, George Jones

They actually had more filmed of them singing (was done in summer 2018) but decided to add to the story and therefore held on to the video until they felt it was perfect. This reminds me of an uncle I never saw. He was at The Swedish Airforce and was killed in a helicopter accident 1960. His siblings (my father) never knew what happened. The secrecy ended in 2010 (60 years later) but at that time my dad and his brothers were dead so they never found out how their little brother died. They never found him, he disappeared in the Baltic Sea. I hope you understand this, I am Swedish and writing with help from google translate.

It's a good song, but Amazing Grace gets me everytime (it was sung at my Granny's funeral.) There used to be a local guy here that played bag pipes. He would go to the local state park, fully dressed with the kilt and everything, walk around and play Amazing Grace. You might not see him, but guarantee you would stop and listen. Beautiful sound to hear echoing through the hills of Southwest Virginia.
