You've brought tears to my eyes for reacting to this. This deep, heartbreaking song is so meaningful, so full of colours and shades for the Romanian culture that I can feel and hear my blood running through my veins. Laura gives a new meaning to music, transcends history, religion, the difference of cultures. She sings in the language of the universe. In case you wonder what these sounds mean, she tries to imitate the sounds of a lark, but she succeeds to embody the chorus voice of all the birds in the world. How amazingly beautiful that is... I wish all the world knew what we have been witnessing here...She can bring cure to this ruined world!

Even without understanding the language, just by the translation the story is , and I might be totally wrong, that she is challenging her unfaithful husband.... at least how the musical interpretaion goes that would totally make sense, but hey I might have gotten it totally wrong here.... anyhow, her version is truly outstanding. Difficult to find sb. who can sing this song as she did. Amazing.... and truly beautiful

The popular/folklore singer Maria Lătărețu (1911-1972) composed and performed this song. It was a sad song and the lyrics are painful, because she had 6 children and lost 5. The lyrics are symbolic, it is very hard to translate, almost impossible. I didn't find the year, but I think is about 195X ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/joC0p6CMo6aNsJY&feature=emb_logo ). Maria Lătărețu died in 1972 in the backstage after a show. After Maria Lătărețu's death, the song was performed by Maria Ciobanu with lyrics changed / 1988 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWKqp6dpr9d-fas ). The new Lyrics are about the symbiotic relationship between man/nature also symbolic and hard to translate. Short version, important for this song is the musical virtuosity, and Laura did justice making this song untouchable.

Since I am Romanian, I will try to explain what this song means. It was originally a threnody and dedicated by the original singer to the tragic loss of her children. It was a very sad song that cried the pain of a mother by using the sounds of birds. The darkness and pain were so powerful that were too much to be dealt with, so the song had to be transformed in time into this transcendental cultural belief that the Romanian peasant and nature have a communion, a brotherhood of grief and joy, that the bird sounds can reach the stars, the skies, God, the afterlife, the belief that's the ultimate and highest way of expressing those deep feelings. This song can't be translated. It's like it has a different meaning for every person, like trying to reach the inner self in the consciousness of the whole universe.

@ Andrei Vlad The original version of this song was composed and performed by Maria Lataretu ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/joC0p6CMo6aNsJY ). The version performed by Maria Ciobanu was in fact a remake, with changed lyrics and a new musical rhythm. I respect both voices, Maria Lataretu and Maria Ciobanu, because both singers are already legends for the Romanian people. Laura Bretan's version is more like a mix between classical genre and folklore style arranged and adapted by Vali Boghean for Laura's spectacular and phenomenal voice. I am sure about one thing ... Laura's voice has no match !
