Sylvanas attacked Teldrassil and Darnassus unprovoked, killing women and children. Then she has the Horde attack a village in Stormsong Valley, the cutscene showing Horde bombing women and children. Again, an unprovoked attack. Is this what the Horde has turned into under Sylvanas, a bunch of child killers? Saurfang knows this is wrong. He's no traitor to the Horde, he opposes the bad leader. It's all her fault. You can be loyal to your country, without being loyal to an administration. Or in this case, your faction instead of country.

Anduin needs Saurfang to be the next warchief. There are no more soldiers, as Genn pointed out. They need a warchief with honor so they can end hostilities. Similar to Jaina/Thrall in Warcraft 3. We know N'zoth is lurking, and the Void Lords behind that. The races of Azeroth can't keep fighting each other and hope to survive the coming onslaught.

I'd be extremely surprised if that happened. In this clip alone he expresses how much The Horde means to him. I can't see him ever defecting, banding with The Alliance to defeat Slyvannas? That's something else entirely. It's not like he's from one guild trying to raid with another, he needn't leave it.

Saurfang isn't defecting. He leads a resistance against Sylvanas. There's to be a forking quest chain for Horde in 8.1. Either you join with Saurfang's resistance and fight against Sylvanas' machinations, or you stand by the Banshee Queen (initially, there wasn't a choice, you could only side with Saurfang... but a lot of Horde players (mostly Forsaken) complained, so Blizz added the option/choice that puts a two-pronged fork in the quest chain). Have fun getting to have choice, Horde. We Alliance will be on the sidelines watching the story in World of Hordecraft.

Maybe if you're Horde and you choose Saurfang, you work with Alliance people. Maybe Alliance gets a choice to agree with working with some Horde, or decide they are all the same and deserve the same treatment. Don't be salty, you don't know what will happen yet.

The 8.1 quest is that Saurfang escaped from prison, this cinematic pretty much showed us that Anduin was the one who let him out. There really isn't a sign of defection, so much as ... we have a common enemy atm.

Blizzard really needs to make an animated Warcraft movie, they are better at it then some big time movie studio's IMO. I would pay good money to see that thing. As for Saurfang being now an ally to the Alliance, i don't think that's really the case, Anduin clearly left the door open so he can escape and try to take out Sylvannas for him as a result because Anduin can't do it alone. Once that is done, i imagine if Saurfang becomes Warchief it would be easier for us to once again have peace like in Legion where we together fought a larger threat, only this time it will be Old Gods and later on Void Lords. As for the whole possible third faction, i can only see it being the Scourge and other people's of Northrend with the Lich King as their leader, but again working with the other factions towards destroying the Old Gods and what not. There are a few MMO's out there that do 3 factions quite well so i don't see this being an issue

Anduin is only proposing a partnership to remove Sylvanas from power. Varok Saurfang is not defecting to the Alliance. Think about the rebellion that lead to the Siege of Orgrimmar back in Mysts of Pandaria to rid us from Garrosh. Same goes here.

I switched from horde to alliance this expansion. I couldn’t face working for sylvanas after teldrassil. As far as my headcanon goes my characters are on a boat having left the horde and are sailing from island to island having adventures. When the horde comes to it’s senses and kicks out Warchief Grotbags we will be back.

On the PTR both Saurfang and Zappy boy have a quest line together. I think they're rallying to overthrow Sylvanas. They're not defecting to the Alliance, and Anduin doesn't want him. They're just fighting the same battle from two different fronts.

I agree with you, there needs to be more direction, like, now ...as it were. It is really heavy, it's dividing the Horde hostilely. We are fighting amongst ourselves about who is right, who is wrong, who is a traitor, who is not. It's a story, a narrative, let it unfold...but please, 4 months by the time 8.1 hits, continue with the narrative...in a direction of some sort. There is nothing wrong with honor and not being aligned with what seems like a "fan favorite" -Sylvanas, and far to many crapping all over Saurfang for his beliefs. He's not one dimensional, he's multifaceted, there is more to why he feels the way "the current warcheif" is not someone he wants to blindly follow. And why he feels conflicted "lost" in all of this (that's my take on his stance). I don't think Sylvanas will have redemption in the "heroes" way, but in a way that that rest of us can at least be "ok" with. Her narrative has never given lead to her ever being a "hero." They definitely will not kill her off (I'll fall clear off my chair if they do) and I don't believe she'll be a raid boss. They'll find a spot for her to chameo in game here and there, once removed from the Throne. Saurfang won't be warchief either and I've thought this well before "the very much missed" Chris Metzen bopped in during the Q & A What's Next panel. He's a General, leader of Armies, not entire factions, not his role, I fully believe he'd reject it, although, he'll stand by someone he feels should lead. But, I like you, am very ready to move on with "What's Next" in this very grim tale of World of Warcraft. I know this is not the popular opinion, but it's my opinion and in alignment with your own. Her entire character is that of revenge against Arthas which once she had that she felt hollow so she tried to kill herself only to end up in hell where she vowed to never return.

It wouldn't be a full faction. It would be an alignment so to speak. For players who wish to actually be evil. mechanically speaking there'd still only be two factions. The Third would act as a "secret" faction working with evil to undermine the other two. That's my prediction. Giving some player agency and allowing the writing team more flexibility and finally getting away from the "Derp-a-Horde-er-bad-and-we-is goods-again!" pigeon hole their stuck with. Little more than some clickable quest boxes and some dialogue and Ta-da!

This really isn't new, the Horde is kind of a two trick pony, dating all the way back. Thrall leads Horde, Grom takes over and does a evil, Thrall works with Alliance to take Grom down. Thrall is Warchief, Garrosh takes over and does a evil, Vol'jin works with Alliance to take Garrosh down. Vol'jin is Warchief, Sylvanas takes over and does a evil, Saurfang works with the Alliance to take Sylvanas down. Really, it's just how the Horde always does.

No, if Saurfang gains control, I think he would end the war, he has pretty much said he's tired of war. I think he might want peace almost as much as Anduin, he wants the Horde to thrive, I think there's a really good opportunity here for Saurfang there's more to life than dying in an honorable fight. Thrall was/is very humanistic and it looks like they are evolving Saurfang into that also.

I loved this cinematic. As an alliance player I felt such sorrow for Anduin. I felt his confusion and loneliness. As a fan of the horde in all of the books and lore I’ve read over the year (love orcs) I felt deeply for Saurfang. He does have honor. The horde haven’t lost their honor. Not in my opinion. I think Anduin is doing what he does best and how his heart has always guided him. To not only save lives of alliance but of all races. To end the war someone needs to rise and show the horde that they still have honor, that they still have tradition, that they still are horde. Loved this so so much.

Well Sourfang escapes runs off so the horde going looking for him and we find him in the swamp of sorrows I believe. Anyway as a horde player you can side with Sourfang or stay with Sylvanas it’s your choice. I imagine the alliance may go looking for him as well not sure though. To me and some others ,Sourfang is still a trader to the horde because he didn’t want to go back to his leader , so as we know he stayed in the alliance stockade.

I have the feeling that by the end that Saurfang will sacrifice himself to either kill her, stop her true plan that we likely don't know about yet, or discover and enable the player characters to halt an external force that may have control of her. I think that the first cinematic we had with him talking about his honorable death was foreshadowing.

Malfurion and Tyrande are coming back in 8.1 and they are going full on fight mode. We will get to see what the dark side of Elune is like and they will punish the one who ignited this war against the Night Elves home. Vengeance is coming for Sylvanas, and it comes on swift wings. My theory: theyre going to bring back Thrall. Sounds weird i know, but with Chris Metzens question at the q&a and its answer... It seems possible. This would leave a way to force Sylvanas to abdicate and go back to just being bansher queen and her and saurfang could balance with thrall in a simmilar way as anduin and genn did for Varian wrynn. No one has to be a raid boss, and the horde can go back to being more unified(at least as unified as it was in wrath.)

Pretty much a civil war in the horde. The old horde behind Saurfang and Sylvanas' new horde, and her new resurrected supporters from lordaeron. I don't think they will kill Sylvanas off but that she will be driven out of the horde along with forsaken to become their own faction while saurfang claims warchief and brings honor back to the horde he knew.

I'm pretty sure Sylvanis became like this after Greymane destroyed the lantern she had to control that Valkyr. I also wonder if they are teaming up to stage a coup against Sylvanis from the inside. Saurfang is not "defecting" to the Alliance. As much as I would love to have him in the Alliance, him being an actual Horde character who I admire above some of my own Alliance leaders, he loves the Horde, and wants to see it restored to its former glory. I hope Saurfang is the one who fucks up Sylvannas, because the Horde deserve to watch her crumble just as much, if not more so, than the Alliance.

I'm with Taliesin in regards to Sylvanas: I don't think she's evil. In fact, I think she thinks what she's doing is right for the Horde. She's lost all hope, having her home razed, being murdered in the process and even denied the peace of death, and then being used as a tool by her murderer, that among other things put her in a bit of a state. Now she doesn't cling to hope. She'll use any means she deems necessary, take any actions no matter how atrocious, all in the name of preserving the horde, the only place her people would be accepted. The assault on Darkshore was an attempt to end the war before it began, to assassinate key members of the Alliance's leadership while simultaneously taking the civilians of Darnassus hostage to prevent the rest of the Alliance from interfering with the Horde's actions in Kalimdor. Now clearly, this didn't go to plan, and when Sylvanas realized that the Night Elves still clung to hope even after she had won, the same hope she feels is both a reminder of her own weakness and a threat to her, well, she got a bit emotional. She made a move to eliminate that hope however she could. And in regards to the war itself, I guess i shoulda touched on that first. Sylvanas is of the opinion that the Horde and Alliance cannot coexist. From what she's seen, what she's experienced, and maybe even what she herself has done, she has no faith that the Alliance as a faction would ever accept the existence of her people, she feels that any attempts to bridge the gap between the two factions would result only in failure and pain, and so has resolved herself not to hope, and kill any hope in her people before it can cause them harm or bring harm to the rest od the Horde. This war was meant to put the Horde in a dominant position over the Alliance, the only group she feels poses any significant danger to the Horde.

Well, if you have more questions than answers, then keep in mind that the reason for all the deaths and Sylvanas burning the tree is because Saurfang screwed up. A story that was put up by Blizzard showed that Saurfang AND Sylvanas both came up with a long-term plan to dismantle the Alliance by taking out the human's allies- hence the reason for the plan to kill Malfurion and occupy the Tree. Night Elves demand action, Anduin can't commit, and then internal chaos ensues with allies leaving, with the Horde returning the night elves their home in exchange for them not taking part in the war and for others too to be given the same deal.... except for the Humans and Worgen- they'd probably be killed off no matter what. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED!!! Saurfang chose NOT to kill Malfurion when he had the chance, as ordered by his Warchief, resulting in her with coming up with the sudden, last-minute Plan B: Burn the Tree. it was why Nathanos- HER CHAMPION- looked so surprised by the sudden 'burn it' order. That wasn't the plan, but they did it anyways to try and kill hope for the Night Elves. Obviously, that failed. So now here we are, up to our heads in an ocean of corpses from both sides, all because Saurfang chose to disobey orders because 'it wasn't honorable'. #SylvanasDidNothingWrong

As a blood elf I would never follow Alleria. Alleria and Veressa were not there to help Sylvannas defend Silvermoon and even knowing what happened to her trying to do so, Aleria doenst care. All she cares about is that Sylvannas is a Warchief. Besides, Aliance didnt want the Blood Elves or the Forsaken either...so f*ck Aleria.

Saurfang doesn't want to be Warchief, neither does Thrall. What if Saurfang finds who he needs to overthrow Sylvanas, then realises that (like being Guardian) the Warchiefs of the Horde tend to become a bit power trippy so then installs a council as leaders. That way, Thrall, Saurfang etc don't have the sole leadership as their burden.

He's not joining the Alliance. Anduin released him knowing that Saurfang would go out and try to stop Sylvanis in his own way.... As for Horde vs Alliance, my guess is there will be a huge enemy to face kind of like some past expansions where they are united... There will be a break again but that is years from now.

You know, the BfA cinematics and story so far actually makes me think of World War 2. Saurfang sort of being a patriot that doesn't agree with the ruthlessness of his leaders or their agenda and feels that they/she have betrayed his people/nation and what it stood for. I dont know i think its nice that when either faction loses their way, theres always someone from the other faction to remind them whats best about it. Thrall and janna helped eachother before theramore, anduin telling an honorable member of the horde that they need help. Not sure agreeing on something makes him officially join the alliance.

This story isnt over, not even close and its becoming clear that it is way more complex than a simple "Sylvanas is evil". Saurfang isnt any more likely to join the Alliance than Anduin would join the Horde. The complexity of this story line appears to be unfolding over many BFA patches and maybe more. The fact that no one is even sure how this will play out is testimony to brilliant story telling. And now I saw a recent picture of Sylvanas holding xal'atath. Take heart Panser, it aint over - not for a long shot. And it looks like Anduin has just let the Horde out of the .. bag, as it were.

Since I play both factions, I have respect for all the racial leaders, regardless of their failures, I love this expansion, the story lines, the plot lines, the loss of kalimdor for the alliance is shocking, I understand Sylvanas and do not believe her to be evil, nor the horde to be bad guys, she was is and ever will be corrupted since her emergence as a banshee, truly tragic, as for saurfang, my horde chars will stand by him and if indeed there is a third faction with saurfang as the head, there we will be.

I still think a great challenge would be to see Sylvanas Raise Galakrond from the dead to fight for her army, and that would be a great ending. At least for me that would be an interesting ending for the expansion, but hey, it is just my imagination. Love WOW, and everything about it.

I get it when you say "direction to a resolution", or lack of one. I think what Blizzard have mistakenly done in the traditional shrouding of future narrative plot points for a greater dramatic reveal later down the line, or end of expansion. Is they have swallowed Sylvannas as a character in that process of hiding the future narrative from the playerbase. So the lack of empathy you are feeling to an otherwise beloved character, is because the narrative is hiding her and her agenda and inexchange we get this very 2D-lack of character depth. What they should of done in with her is keep the main storyline and her agenda separate like they did in Legion.

What did they do to the Horde ?! No matter how this story ends with Sylvanas and Saurfang. They sowed discord in the horde, split it, one for the old soldier, others for the ruthless woman. Who will now unite different views on what is happening when it is all over? Neither Sylvanas nor Saurfang can stand at the helm of the Horde. A third character will be brought onto the stage who will bring everything together. Cairne Bloodhoof? Lor'themar Theron? Will Thrall be back? Will Vol'jin rise again? Who will unravel all this ?! I played for the Horde all my life and now I am crushed and confused, two brilliant Horde characters set off against each other, and with them the whole Horde. What have you done with the Horde, Blizzard? I hope that Vol'jin, before his death, Loa whispered something that we still do not know. Because this wise troll would not have appointed Silvana to be the leader of the Horde. I hope that much is not the way we were shown.

I think that Saurfang will kill Sylvanas and become war chief, but then a new threat would show up to Azeroth, something like an expansion called the return of the lich king would bring old players back and have a good impact on the story. During that expansion, one of the two leaders of the factions will either retire or die and someone with different morals could step in and set the next expansion for Horde vs Alliance if they really wanted to. I hope if they do this it would happen on the Alliance and finally blizzard won't make horde have a corrupt leader for the 3rd time in a row. Something like some really racist rich guy who wants to kill all of the races not in the Alliance would really be a different take and show to certain players that Alliance aren't always (the good guys).

I think it's more that the enemy of my enemy is my temporary comrade. Saurfang is too dedicated to the Horde to actually ally with the Alliance. He just wants his Horde back, and not used as a blunt weapon for a personal vengeance of one person. Anduin just wants to stem this tide of pointless death. I don't think there'll be this unification of factions. You mention that all Horde leaders go away, but Teldrassil (a capital city) burns, Southshore is choked with poison gas, Theramore is destroyed by an arcane bomb, all done by the Horde. Who's lost more? I assure you, Saurfang is loyal to the Horde, and he'll squeeze the life out of whoever threatens it, however he can, and in this case, using whoever he can.

Hey, just to say, i'm agree with the others comments below that are saying that it's not a deflection for Saurfang but an opportunity given by Anduin to leads a movement against Sylvanas and be free. I play more often Alliance but likes a lot the Horde too. And i, personally, prefere when the two factions are fighting side by side, so much powerful and more effective than allways for who know what just punching each other because.. ''Well u know, Horde and Alliance are meant to be dumb and must allways be fighting each other''... The Alliance and the Horde were together in the front lines a lot more than a lot of people think or prefere remember.. We need to fight the old gods and the void gods together. And you must retrieve your horde back !

I feel like this will be another redemption story. Sylvanas will somehow save her sister in a sacrifice play. It will be a sad moment if this happens. I am a regular alliance player, but I have enjoyed playing Horde off and on because of Sylvanas. Certainly Blizzard will do Slyvanas justice in some fashion. I think it was Chris Metzen who stated "we love a good redemption story." Everyone is flawed and Slyvanas has seen a great deal of tragedy in her life. I hope she will see the light at the end. Now it's sounding like Arthas' story.

Saurfang has not once but twice failed to end the war. He could've finished Malfurion off as ordered but didn't which resulted in the last minute burning, and again when he didn't kill Anduin who is high king. Could've ended the line of Stormwind's Kings and ended the war, but once again he didn't. Shows how much honor gets you. A war that is lasting longer than planned, and one stubborn orc who cannot follow basic instructions.

Sota Steelwing she will never “end” the war. She planned burning and ruination of Stormwind BEFORE Teldrassil. She plans to kill all Alliance races. Saurfang’s actions wouldnt have changed that.

@@MrVlad12340 Not true. The whole plan was to destroy Stormwind in order to win (thus ending) the war. She did NOT plan to burn Teldrassil (that we know of) until Saurfang failed to kill Malfurion. The original plan was to make everyone horde, not to kill all Alliance races. All things considered it was a bold and well laid plan, but way too risky. If the ocupation of Darnassus failed the consequences would be catastrophic, so failure wasn't an option. And knowing this Saurfang didn't kill Malfurion when he had the chance. Even though Malfurion lured him out and tried to assassinate him (by Saurfang's own standards this is dishonorable) he still didn't do it. It's a war, for fuck's sake. You're fighting someone who's a lot stronger than you, it really doesn't matter how you kill him. You do the best you can, make it clean, but come on! You DO it. The stakes were WAY too high for him not to. Yes, Sylvanas went full crazy after that and somehow they made an interesting character become a cliche but the plan didn't work because of him, not her. She saved his life, btw. More than once. And if the books are to be believed over the game she was also the one who won the battle against Malfurion. The mission makes it seems like he was about to kill Sylvanas and Saurfang saved her with that throw. Not what happened in the book. They were fighting and she was winning. He didn't even need to do it.
