Xavi had this to say about the player who would have been more famous than Messi had he moved to Barcelona -"His talent was simply out of the norm. He could dribble past seven or eight players but without speed - He just walked past them. For me he was sensational. We used to say - this guy, Le Tissier is outrageous and he never goes to a big team. It's incredible, he could play for anyone". He stayed loyal to the club he joined as a 16 year old - I have to agree with Xavi his skills were outrageous and a match for any of the greats and I include Ronaldo/Messi and any other foreign superstar. He was known to his fans as Le God. Matthew Le Tissier. For sure Spurs and Chelsea put offers on the table for him which would have made him the most expensive English player of his time. There were rumoured to be other offers which he turned down. Been watching top flight football for 61 years and yet to see a more skilfull player or better goal scorer. He didn't playe for bigger clubs but he destroyed many of them practically on his own. He made as many goals for his team mates as he scored himself. If he were Spanish or Brazilian he would have had a hundred caps and been a bigger name than Messi. The city of Southampton loved the man and he rewarded that love with those sort of goals throughout a long and loyal career. Le God indeed.

Most underrated player ever....he was literally the most gifted footballer I've ever seen....was amazing growing up watching his goals every week each one out did the last...he was English, never got the recognition he deserved around then he was the best in the world and never got in the England's side cos he wasn't at a fashionable club....so only really known in the UK but ask anyone who grew up in the 90s if Matt Le tissier was any good and they will normally say the same

The best part of that last goal was it was against Manchester United against the legendary Peter Schmeichel. I only have one favorite English player and it's this guy.

I guess it depends on context. On a nationwide scale, he played for a massive club (considering the thousands of teams there are). But if you look at it in Premier League only context, no he played for a very small club which is what makes him very special.

The last goal, the chip, was against the great Peter Schmeichel of Manchester United. The goal where he flicked the ball around one defender, lifted it over the next and side footed it home was against Newcastle United and in the same game he scored the volley that he hit after cushioning the ball on his thigh. The guy was magical at times and it was his goals and assists that saved Southampton from relegation on many occasions. For those reasons he is my joint favourite Saints player of all time, as I rate Mick Channnon as equal for his ability for club and country (21 goals in 46 games for England I believe).

He’s English. Got a handful of caps (international appearances).. could have built a team around him. Only played for Southampton. Was a fave player of iniesta or xavi.

Nice video mate. To answer your question about where he's from. He's technically not English, he's from Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands. The Islands do have their own teams, but only play against each other or other small islands, not in a proper UEFA/FIFA comps. People born in the Islands can play for England, NI, Scotland or Wales, though most do support England, unless there's a family connection to another country.

Stayed his whole career at Southampton, yeah. They needed his goals and assists to remain a Premier League team and I think that was what got the best out of him - the challenge to his PL player status coming from without (other teams) rather than coming from within (ambitious, prideful competitive teammates) as it would have if he'd have signed for a bigger team. If memory serves they were relegated the season after he retired.

Ive been following football for over 35 years yet to myself and many Le tissier's England career was of the greatest footballing crimes in England. It was pretty disgraceful tbh. The england managers at the time had a very simplistic view of the game and how it should be played. They believed that a team can win games with limited grafters. It was a fallacy that they held for a long time and not only got them nowhere but it also made England look very mediocre compared to the elite of Europe and the rest of the world! Big big shame!!

...nope English...he played for England...drum roll please.....9 times...and we wonder why we struggle in World Cups. If he was French, Spanish or German they would have built a team around him and won something, but in UK flair players used to be looked down on, people would say "oh but he's lazy" , it's like PLEASE, yeh and Maradona, Ronaldinho, Pele, Cruyff all were defensive tracking back beasts? nah not remotely, we should have built a team around him (at least for 1 big tournament) I think about the potential of being able to have put him and Gazza on the same pitch, or even used them with interchanging. I think him staying at Southampton his whole career, and being a solely attacking player meant he never got a fair chance at England.I feel John Barnes had it much the same way . Barnes played as an all out attacking wing forward for Liverpool but was made to be a tracking back defence minded left midfielder for England and people wonder why he was not as great in an England shirt,) England have a habit of effectively coaching flair out of players, or if that fails, minimising their chances to use such tools if they have them. Just look at the 00's with the team England had we managed to win nothing and really performed crap in most competitions, yet that team individually pretty much ALL won the Champions league. The fact we never reached a final shows how poorly managed English international football has been at a very deep level and I mean culturally and philosophically/tactically. We have actually had the quality to win things consistently since the 90's maybe even 80's and you could probably argue the same for the 70's as well. It's like Liverpool and the league, they had the team to do it a couple of times but it took them 30 years to end that drought and that was a big part to do with the fans and the philosophy around the club. I think it;s the same with England. England need to bring fun into the football to stand a chance, and ditch (or at least tone down) the "do the hard yards" and "dig in" approach , which is good most of the time ,but needs a little more to become world champions. Using players with flair and high creativity is part of the path needed and Le Tissier , to me represents a glarring issue at the core of UK football (mainly England, I feel the Welsh and Scotts and N' Irish are more willing to do that they just rarely have the players too)
