Thanks for watching, everyone! To reiterate some of what we said during this episode - check out the full albums when they come out! They're great and worth it. Possible spoiler for our end-of-year podcast but Frost* and VOLA are definitely on my top 5 for 2024.

Wonderful new track from DT. There is so much Rush in here. The intro is like DT's take on Witch Hunt and Petrucci pulls off one his most Lifeson like moments during his solo with those wonderful behind the beat bends. The fact it sounds so familiar is testament to the profound impact they have had on all our ears. We are blessed. Roll on 20th October in London!

This new DT song is the proof balance is restored...all fell in place. Of course it's nothing new or innovative, but it's 100% DT. No other band can deliver this sound, many proggy bands went djent, added gutural vocals, symphonic elements, but no one do this like DT.

I think that the nostalgic sound that was mentioned by Daniel on the DT song and hearkening back to Black Clouds; I would think the nostalgic sound should / would hearken more to their early albums as in Images and Words, Awake, etc. But, not hearing it here. For this song Jordan Rudess with his little trademark twang on keyboard at 5:39. I liked it once but not on every album. On first listen it sounds like a lot of songs from their previous albums. Sorry, no Wow factor. I just don't want a repeat of previous songs from their last 6 or 7 albums. DT always seemed to mix it up on earlier albums between progressive rock, progressive metal and then for good measure some Melodic Rock thrown in and where, IMO LaBrie shines. I'll wait and see what the entire album sounds like and maybe this is just something to wet our appetites. Best part of the Video is when Mike opens his eyes at 23 seconds.

Vola's new album Friend Of A Phantom is easily my prog rock/metal AOTY in 2024 so far. The ideas this band come up with in their songs are so unique and original and have you wanting to listen more. They deliver the catchy choruses, the melodies, the heavy & soft moments this album has it all. All these people stoked for the new DT album not for me it's Vola 100%. Another thing I'll add is Cannibal is a good song but I am not a fan when this band collaborates with other artists cause I find it takes away from the formula this band has. I would rather hear Asger the lead vocalist/guitarist do the screams instead of bring someone in just my personal opinion.

It's a fun track. But I am a little disappointed that it offers nothing new or different, however. It works as a "return to form" but hopefully they also get more experimental with the other tracks.

new DT song is good. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but the number of DT fanboys bagging on the song kinda embarrassing to be associated with the fans. I am happy to see Portnoy back. I bet the full album doesn't disappoint

The only disappointing thing about the Dream Theater song is that chorus (annoying and uninteresting like most of the songs in the latest albums), and also the verse vocal melody is doing nothing. Sounds like any verse from the last 2 albums. The rest is great. The intro is so Opeth.

DT = sterile, predictable, uninspired. I respect Portnoy as a person, drummer and legacy in music, not only with DT, but I prefer Mangini on drums. Portnoy back in DT is about business 💲. They will sell lots of tickets, CDS and merchandising. You know what I mean? DT could be a much better band in terms of vocals if they had another vocalist, one more appropriate for their style. Labrie is a competent vocalist, but NOT for a metal band. I really dislike DT with the voice of Labrie, I can't even listen to the band anymore, although it is one of my favorites. A vocalist like Dino Jelusick, Jorn Lande or Russell Allen would be perfect: more metal, more rocker, more bluesy, more dynamic, more expressive, more rough, and everything else that a proper metal/rock vocalist or singer must have, such as the case of Russel Allen.
@ivanp-jc-is-the-king2 ай бұрын
Of course they won't reply to you if you don't glorify DT and especially Portnoy. I'm ok with them reuniting but question is still can they make what they did in 2000s? Song is good but when I see people fanboying over them it's pathetic while that same people used to talk dirty when Mangini was in the band who for me really brought drummimg on the next level in DT.
@jazzcatjohn2 ай бұрын
Cut and paste DT song. Nothing original or special at all. Disappointed. I'm sure there will be more interesting ideas on the album, but this song has been done before several times. That's probably why so many fans are calling it a classic.

It might be threading a bit too familiar ground, but I think it was a calculated single release. Something that sounds "classic" DT. I think and hope that there will be something more interesting on the rest of the album. We shall see!
