Probably the most important band of the last 50 years and I'll try to explain why. When they were known as Joy Division (before the death or original lead singer Ian Curtis) they made an album called Unknown Pleasures (you'd be familiar with the cover from the T-Shirts even if you dont know what it's for - it's a wave pattern), it set a new standard for production done cheaply but creating atmosphere and largely launched music styles like shoegaze and goth. After Ian's death they changed their name and started experimenting, early drum machines came with some basic sounds but the capacity for you to record more drummer Stephen Morris painstakingly recorded individual drum sounds for many days, once he did all the hard work nobody else could be bothered and they used his sounds so for many years most every dance song with drum machines is his stuff, he used to joke that every few months he would gather up his tiny royalty cheques and buy lunch and a beer at the local pub. They had synths and drum machines but at the time those two couldn't talk to each other and synch up and they went to someone they knew at the local uni and asked if he could figure out how to do it - once he did that opened the door for modern dance music as we know it. They then helped financed the Hacienda nightclub in Manchester which is where Trance, House and a bunch of other DJ driven music styles really took off. Between Joy Division and New Order there is hardly any style of music that hasn't been impacted by these guys all the way from Punk, New Wave, Goth, Shoegaze through to all the dance styles and those that use drum machines and synths as well as most everyone in between thanks tot he tech.

No they weren't hitting buttons. Peter Hook (bassist) says they spent 2 hours before each performance setting up and wiring their synthesisizers as the equipment was so new and so primitive that they were the only people who could do it, and they didnt trust the roadies. So putting the equipment in place took longer than the live performance itself...

A) while yes, they have a few "touch button" for prerecorded sound effect bits, the keyboard parts are played live in concert B) This band and song basically started this, the house genre and the whole 80s synth pop scene. C) There is nothing primitive about it. It sounds as fresh and "like music from the future" today as it did 40 years ago.

This was the best of the best of its time. It came out of the Manchester "scene" post-punk and the history of the band (and Joy Division), Factory Records, the Hacienda night club and Anthony H Wilson is well worth looking into. The film 24 Hour Party People is all about it. I was a Goth at the time just down the road in Liverpool and even I loved, and still love, this track.

This was far from Ableton or even MPC levels of "just push a button". MIDI wasn't on the market yet when this was recorded, so pretty much each part (drum machine, synth bass, synth lead) is running on its own sequencer and they had to be synced up on the analog multitrack tape. In spite of how much of a pain in the ass that had to be, it's still smartly arranged. Things are constantly changing so it never gets boring, but it also never loses the all-important beat. All that adds up to an iconic song that was still packing dance floors 12 years later when I was out clubbing.

I have a pandora station called “summer hits of the 80’s” which I always play when I’m out at my pool. Reminds me of being a kid in my parents pool and my older sister ruled the music out there. I couldn’t stand any of it as I was into maiden, ozzy, Metallica back then. But now I love all of it. Even bands like Duran Duran and actually listening to the music realizing they were excellent musicians. I think the 80’s get a bad rap because of the silly lyrics, outfits and the very heavy synth sounds. But underneath all that, there is some great music. I did listen to twisted sister back then but only recently realized how good the drummer and bassist were now that I listen with a slightly trained ear.
