High hopes is part of an Album, as all of us know, pink floyd didnt make songs, they create albums. i am so attached to that song of Pink Floyd for so many reasons, but i was lucky enough to listen the Live version in the End of an Era LIVE, and since then as much as i love Pink Floyd version, Nightwish version is my 1st pick

Yep. Maybe it's because I witnessed this performance live and it was a completely eerie and magical experience, but I've never managed to get back to the original High Hopes after. Every single cover Nightwish has made they've improved, honestly.

This is Anette singing Scaretale. She does a very good job in the studio and on things written for her. I loved the albums when she was with Nightwish. And High Hopes was always a favorite Pink Floyd song, but I came to really love Marco's darker interpretation more. He didn't try to copy the original, he put his own excellent stamp on a classic. What can I say, the whole band was on point for High Hopes!

To fully understand songs like Scaretale you have to check the movie, Imaginaerum. You can watch it on KZbin, it's easy. If you check it you'll understand why most of the songs of the album Imaginaerum are so theatrical. Every Nightwish fan should watch the movie, you can see all of them acting, and playing, sometimes dressing in very different outfits. You can watch the movie and react, it's worth doing it. Nightwish doing a Pink Floyd cover it's great for me as a HUGE Pink Floyd fan, from much long ago than I am of Nightwish. It's a great version.

Anette’s studio voice rocks for Imaginaerum. It’s my favourite Nightwish album. You’ve heard Floor do some live already but Anette holds her own on the album. Love Scaretale. And great reaction to High Hopes mate. The Nightwish boys should do more stuff together.

I love Nightwish's cover of High Hopes. Each of band members is so tight. Can only imagine that Pink Floyd was really pleased with the end result (sometimes bands must just cringe at the covers)... and I do like it better.

Only cover to come close to the original....Marco has more feeling in the vocals but the instrumentals aren’t as rich,not surprising as they don’t have the huge set up Floyd have and while Emmpu does a great job no one can get emotion out of a guitar like Gilmore.That said apparently David Gilmore really likes this cover and that says a lot for the Nightwish version

Anette was great untill she wasn't. She was unfortunately very inconsistent. Seen her like four times live, two times with her old band Alyson Avenue and twice with Nightwish. When she's at her best she sounds really good... but then she have her worse days and it's just... yeah you get the point. I think this was the primary reason why she could not stay with Nightwish since she was way to inconsistent and also felt uncomfortable singing many Tarja songs. Combine it with the flu that plagued the band early on during that tour, pregnancy etc.

I confess this version of "High Hopes" is my fave too. The Scaretale scene in the "Imaginaerum" movie (yes, there is an actual MOVIE!) of a story Nightwish made from the songs of the album, is VERY trippy. It is pretty cool, dreamlike and Tim Burtonesque, as you can imagine. The band makes a couple appearances in the film with Tuomas showing up as a young version of the lead. Thanks for both songs, Verbal!

High Hopes by Pink Floyd was my all time favorite song for decades now - and just like you I didn´t know about the nightwish cover… I did know Nightwish, but lost interest in them when they fired Tarja the way they did it (we all don´t know enough to judge, but still...). Rediscovered them a few months ago and heard Floor for the first time... and was hooked instantly. Love them now, even much more! And just like you I was curious about what that "high hopes song" is all about. Is it maybe...? Could it be…? ...and I held my breath from the beginning. That first listening to it, sitting lonely at my Computer, was an experience so intense... I will never forget that! And by listening to your reaction just now I was able to relive that first time intensity that you normally only have once! I saw it in your face, you just exactly felt what I felt. Can´t be wrong, I most probably had the very same facial expressions, being on the verge of tears... Thanks once again for giving me that special moment! Greetings from Germany :-)

I did check that too. Interesting comparison. In Pink Floyd live version I could imagine myself sitting still there amongst middle aged, well dressed people, listening, maybe with eyes closed. In this version I would be standing and moving with the music and the masses, like a whole body experience, while Pink Floyd one just moves my ....mind? Both were still really good versions, but I think I found Pink Floyd as a bit boring and lame compared to this. Maybe I'm not ready to just "sit down and listen" to music, yet. I want to FEEL it.

High Hopes is one of the best things I've ever listened to. I've been a Floyd fan for my entire life, this one gives me shivers every listen. Rasputina did a cool cover of Wish You Were Here. Different. My favorite 2 Anette songs are on Imaginaerum, Slow Love Slow and Turn Loose the Mermaids

Great reaction! Try Marco's new solo album song Isäni Ääni (My Father's Voice). I'm sure there's a full English translation to it online but he talks about his father's voice that he remembers sang him to sleep and with the same voice he sings now. You would love it!

Scaretale works nicely for Anette (at least the studio version). The song really fits her style. High hopes though... damn. I generally loathe covers, but this was gold. As good as the original (loses points for being a cover, gains them back by being amazing).

Scaretale from the album imagenerum is a concept album, they made this album and a movie to go with it. You can hear almost the whole album trought the movie. The movie is called by the same name as the album, and its a fantastic movie, you gotta check it out!!!!!!!

High Hopes is one of the best performances Marco has done with Nightwish in my opinion. The composition by Tuomas is brilliant, and Emppu's guitar solo is outstanding. I prefer Nightwish's version in this regard. However... I think the Pink Floyd version much better relates the melancholy and sadness of the song. It is a sad song after all. This is probably why Tuomas chose to cover it in the first place. Lost childhood and all. The end of innocence.

What I really loves about the High Hopes cover is that it is different from the original, a cover should not be a copy, because that will never work. However I do agree with you on where the songs differences from each other, and the strenght they have. And damn Emppu's guitar is great, and so is Marco's voice.

It's reflecting on having reached the absolute heights of ambition, then having to let it go, because it's over. Even though there's still much you wanted to do; it's over. Tuomas chose to cover it, because they were about to let Tarja go. She had been their friend and bandmate for 10 years, they had reached international success, and she broke with them.

Floor can do all of their stuff. Her imaginaerum versions are incredible. You've heard at least two (Storytime and I want my Tears Back) You should try out Scaretale with Floor. You'd be surprised how good it is. And comparing Song of Myself with Floor and Anette would be a great idea. The wacken 2013 one is the recommendation anyway. The studio version is 13 minutes long with a poem for the second half, but I usually listen to the live version because I prefer Floor's take on it.

There is a live recording of Floor doing this song (in Helsinki) and she does a VERY good job! Anette is perfect in the studio version but sometimes she didn't live up to the expectation live. Floor meets the expectations and goes far beyond. Look up the Scaretale by Floor.

This isn't a response to anything anyone else has said, just a comment. I'll always stand by Annette - I saw her live and she was fantastic. The live videos of her tend to be awful. She'll have given some bad performances, true, every performer does. But the live vids seem all bad, which is a real shame. I've seen live videos of local music where I live and there have certainly been plenty of times that I've heard female singing sound seriously dodgy even to the point of being off-key, when I know for a fact that it wasn't because I've been in the audience on the night it was recorded. I think some of this is because what you hear in the room simply isn't the same as what you hear through the sound desk. The room itself will change the tone for one thing. The vocals through the desk won't have the atmosphere of the room tone and vocals seem to suffer particularly from this, unlike the other instruments. There can be all sorts of tricks used to make the sound better on a recording, which they must be using on the offical live vids now, hence why they are studio (or higher!) quality. I don't think Anette benefited from this. Just to make very clear what I'm saying, I will never ever say that either Tarja or Floor need any kind of vocal editing. Ever. Never, ever, not in a million years. They are both goddesses and deserve all the praise they get. I saw Nightwish twice with Tarja and it was a seriously amazing experience! Was Anette as good as Tarja? Depends on how you judge it. My first reaction would be HELL NO, but then I'm not sure they are really comparable due to the radical difference in styles. The recordings Tarja and Floor did that people ask folk to react to are official live videos, the End of an Era DVD etc. These will have had things put into them, like reverberation, in order to get the sound mix we hear to be as good or better than what the audience heard. Noise will have been cleared out, room tone will have been added back. What they're putting out now are extremely slick, very well-produced recordings, which they were not doing during the Anette era. Plus, Tarja and Floor have been recorded so many times now that there is a really wide selection to choose from and we can select the best. There are so few with Anette that this isn't possible with her.

Oooh, forgot to say also, the experience of listening to music is radically different to the experience of a live performance. One of my parents wrote a textbook to do with sound, though I've not read it. I may have to pick her brain about this later. She was at that Anette-Nightwish gig with me too. Anyway, this can very much alter the sound in terms of how we perceive it. So, my perception of Anette's vocal while I was there isn't going to be the same as the perception of somebody just listening to it.

I agree, most of the early stuff doesn't fit Anette well cause Tarja's voice is just so dark and imposing, but I saw a live video of her doing Wish I had an Angel, and while Marco overpowered her ( cause he's a beast and I am SO glad he is singing more now) I liked her stylizing. High Hopes was the highlight of the End of an Era concert for me, besides maybe Tarja's Ever Dream. As for Scaretale, this is one of the few songs where Anette may actually be a better fit than the other two singers; maybe Floor could have done it, but then it would have sounded very different; Tarja, no. However, I disagree that Anette is the better vocalist for the whole album; Floor has proved time and again on live versions of Anette's songs that in general there isn't even a comparison, for example on Ghost River, Song of Myself etc. She's in a whole other league.

And of course they didn't exist in Tarja's era. Anette whould had been nice to keep in Nightwish as a co-singer to Floor. I mean they could supplement eachother very nicely since Anette is a really bright soprano while Floor have a deeper tone. Well we might aswell put in Tarja for a tripple kit of singers. Need classical Opera - hand mic to Tarja, want a more metal sound hand it to Floor and then when they need a really light sound they could hand it too Anette. Floor and Anette whould probably be able to harmonize well... Floor and Tarja we already know can blend well.

it was a Century Child tour when I got so-called better places in the ice rink and there was a lot of business tickets in the audience. One drunken suit alpha decided to come to tell me during high hopes that these stuffing bits are being played because Tarja gets changed outfit about a stupid comment annoyed that I asked him to crawl back into the cave and never use stuffing as word at High Hopes. What made this idiot to go stewards to complain that I'm aggressive to her. Me 155cm 40kg 19y goth him 190cm far beyond 100kg and 30 years when the steward came to find out whats wrong, he started laughing and asked me not to hurt the man. I took a classical hand in the bible pose said "I promise and swear to use a lot of lubricant and be very gentle"

If you haven't listen to the Imaginaerum album, please do, it is amazing. Scaretale is one of the few songs Anette did great live with Marco. Nightwish cover of Pink Floyd is just anazing, it is a tribute to Pink Floyd.

Imaginaerum is a very cool album, honestly. The live shows with Anette were probably the weakest of any Nightwish eras. Glad to see a reaction to Scaretale, though. It is an overlooked song. I think it is possibly her best work, because it is such a different song. You are 100% correct that Tarja and Floor would be a mistake for the Imaginaerum album, even though they are both better Nightwish singers, in my opinion. The album was basically the only one specifically written FOR Anette's voice. As far as High Hopes, I just love this version. There is sooo much emotion in this version. They don't try to copy Pink Floyd, that would be a mistake. They do their own version, and I think they do it amazingly. So glad to see a reaction for this one as well!

You need to react to Nightwish Symphony of Destruction. It's amazing. There are two live versions. Do the one in Montreal. The other one has poor sound quality and Marko sounds a bit too drunk.

Annette gets alot of unfair shit thrown at her. Shes a really good singer, just not a very good fit for Nightwish... normally I mean, there are exceptions like this one and Amatanth is also fantastic imo.

Imaginareum is my favorite Nightwish album but Floor has done a lot of the songs live and was way better with that said I prefer the studio version of Scaretale. I also highly recommend you watch the Nightwish movie Imaginareum.

I recommended that to him too. I think many people doesn't know that they have a movie, and it's great to watch them acting and all. The movie itself it's very interesting. In my opinion it's like a trip through Tuomas' mind, creative mind. Dark, full of fantasy and night terrors. And it's very easy, because it can be found on this same platform with good quality.

Well done, sir! Though I almost always prefer Floor or Tarja on Nightwish vocals, there are a few songs that Anette did really well.....my personal favorite being a mellow one called Meadows of Heaven. I almost never like a remake of Floyd songs, but due to the immense talent of these guys, they pulled this one off, well! Really miss Jukka's charismatic energy at the drum section!

Anette is just to high pitched for Nightwish, she could not keep up with the band live. That poppy sound almost killed nightwish, she was a nice stop gap but Floor is the real replacement of Tarja.

Ballony. Anette's voice is bright, and she can sing high. But she often sings low too. There is much debate among people in those singer range videos if Anette is mezzo or soprano (she is soprano though), because she sings often low. She also has sung lowest modal voice notes of the NW-singers if one believes those singer-range videos. And bright voice doesn't equal poppy, although Floor fanbois always use that phrase about Anette. Her career has been rock and metal, not pop, so calling her poppy is kinda stupid.

@@mramd9062 Floor has one year of classical training. She is hardly a beginner, and she knows it. Anette is pop is a stupid mantra by some Floor knights. She has over two decades been in rock and metal bands, never sung pop. Anette's Wikipedia-page associates her with these genres: "alternative rock, folk rock, hard rock, melodic rock, classic rock, symphonic rock, symphonic metal, power metal, doom metal". No pop there. You toxic Floor fans use "pop" to belittle, but actually metal and rock singers sing quite the similar fashion as pop singers.
