Whatever you do, don't stop your Nightwish reactions until you reach their (in my opinion) two magnum opus, The Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth. Lots to go through before you reach those, but those 2 are probably their biggest songs. For Poet and the Pendulum you should do some reading up on it before.

I concur. Note that both may need some preparation, but different, for PatP it really helps if you know what happened when Tarja was dismissed and how fans and politicians reacted. The music conveys the emotions, but knowing the background explains why that emotion is in that part of the 'song'. For GSoE some general knowledge about the formation of the solar system and the origins of life and evolution might explain some lyrics. If you have that backgroud, just jump in.

Hi Eric, Yes, it is a different tone, the first half especially, as this song was written for Anette, who had a more poppy tone to her voice. Even so, Floor makes it entirely her own, as always, and adds her own signature to it, only amplifying the entire band. It is indeed brilliant, of the entire band. Thank you for your brilliant analyses, BTW, I really love them, and not in the least because you are open about your own emotions. Thank you for that, it is much, very much appreciated! Kindest regards, Wim P.S.: I wrote the above between the first minute and first quarter of the song. I think the only song Tuomas has ever written especially for radio broadcasting purpose (not counting the song for the Eurovision Songcontest) was 'Sleeping Sun'. He was asked to write a 4-minute top song for release in Germany (dedicated to the solar eclipse that arose on the European sky in 1999). He wrote the song (which is beautiful by the way), but very reluctantly. He is not one to be restricted in his songwriting. To answer your other question; yes, Marco has worked with Arjen Lucassen. He was a guest vocalist for the Ayreon album 'Theory Of Everything'. He has also performed in some live shows. This song has a special place in my heart !!! Not just because wolf is Estonian national animal, but "The Windmill" battle between Tuomas and Floor . Plus Floor's inner Wolf .... Holy Mother of Odin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch. The title is taken from a King's novel called “Wolves of the Calla”. But the conception of the book has nothing to do with the text behind the song, it is far more inspired by the film "Dead Poets' Society". The main idea is - one must live his life the best he can, to strive for his aims, because the wolves are always 7 days behind you and they will catch you if your life is not of full value... and then you will be only dead meat. That's what Tuomas said in one interview some time ago. Thanks, this was a good video again. It’s interesting to follow what you find about them and their music. Floor and Marko. They are probably one of the best singer couples. When there are players in soccer or hockey whose teamwork is perfect. And we admire "how the two always find each other on the field," so Marko and Floor have the same situation. Perfection. You are right about Tuomas. He doesn’t make music for the radio. Actually, he does it for himself. Kind of. His process is that he gets the vision, hears it in his head. Then write it. And finally the lyrics. He doesn’t think about what others think of it. I am happy that he is financially free to do so. The worst thing would be if his creativity were forced to make music for the money. Now he is in a situation where he can give wings to his imagination. And we are the winners in this case !!!

Emppu's time of doubt actually occured around 2001, a really rough time for the band. Their first bassist, Sami Vänskä, was let go, due to missing appointments and not really showing enough commitment. Emppu had started complaining about feeling like just a "hired gun". In an article a few years ago, Tarja stated that this was for her the start of things going downhill. Tuomas called their labels and unofficially declared that Nightwish was done and that he might do another album, but he'd never again perform with them live. Luckily a hiking trip with good friend Tony Kakko (formerly of Sonata Arctica) gave Tuomas a change of heart.

Another of my favorites! This one was inspired by the Steven King book series called Dark Tower V "Wolves of Calla". In my opinion it is also all about "Carpe diem". The wolves and the poison are metaphors for death, which is never far away in all of our lives. Make the most of every day. It may be your last. Live life to its fullest and grab everything life has to offer. Heroes dare to take chances to grab for everything they dream of in life. Cowards never take the chance to achieve success and fulfillment of their dreams. Fear of failure. Damn, you are great at finding descriptive designations & texture references for music. Are you an author? Well done Eric. Passion! Yes, that is where Annette left this song and in came the Queen. "Is this where, Heroes and Cowards part ways"! Yes! Never hatred Eric. Henry is absolutely dominant as a runner. Marko big vocal influence is Ronnie James Dio. it does that for me as well. This band has reignited my passion for music. It has been missing or at least dulled for a couple decades. Too much music and music industry can dull even the most passionate music lover. Marko has hooked up with Arjen several times. I would suggest you return to Wacken 2013 to experience the opener "Dark Chest of Wonders" (Wacken fans see Floor 1st time). And come up huge in the clutch and just have a presence about them that everyone else notices immediately........... And for some reason I always thought that was a good analogy for Floor because she can do just about anything but some of her best attributes are stuff you can't put your finger on they are so subjective and that's what I think makes her amazing

Love your reactions and all the things you point out while listening, and also your comparisons to other bands and putting it all into a larger context. I personally find these reaction videos to be some of the most entertaining and educating ones out there. Looking forward to more Nightwish reaction videos! 😃 Also, if you feel like digging into more Kamelot, I can really recommend the songs from Kamelot's "One Cold Winter's Night" Live DVD recorded in Oslo in 2006, there are some really nice gems in there.

Sir Eric, you provide such a wealth of intuitive analysis, while Nightwish is far and away my most essential addiction you’ve managed to add a significant layer to my ability to enjoy them even more. I frequent your performances over and over because of this…. Many many thanks.

another one of my favorites :-)! Thanks for that. This band, man... This certainly has a very different vibe from dead boys poem. They are masters of emotion; For the happier vibes I usually go to Alpenglow, My walden, or - often forgotten - over the hills and far away. The official live video for that one has a lot of photographs of the band they wanted to share with the fans. Very much worth watching. you got it quite right by the way: this band as a whole is greater than the individual parts. Every one of them individually is a master of their chosen craft, but forged together by Tuomas' craft, they reach heights few bands have attained before them. And each of them willingly bend themselves to his craft. That makes them truly great.

Emppu is so underrated. I'm happy your seeing it. Can he shed? of course better then most in fact. And if you look you'll see he only has a volume control knob. Hmm no tone control. This is huge part of his tone.. it's awesome

You're partially right. Yes, the song was written before Floor joined the band. But also technically the song was written before Anette joined the band. The album Dark Passion Play was written after Tarja had been ejected from the band but before Anette had been chosen to replace her. The band members said it was scary because they wrote the lyrics and music and had all the tracks laid down without any of the female vocals and they weren't sure it was going to work, they weren't sure they were ever going to find someone to fill the gap left by Tarja at that point. So with that in mind, the tracks on DPP could be done with either Anette's or Floor's vocals without saying they "belonged" to either. It's a unique album in Nightwish's catalog (and their darkest for obvious reasons).

This song is about the Wolves coming for Tuomas. The Finnish media and Government, everyone over what happened. So my fantasy hubby Sir Tony Kakko took Tuomas hiking because Tuomas wanted to end Nightwish. Tony talked him out of it and helped Tuomas through his depression. All Tony has ever said is he is glad their walk helped Tuomas.

For me this song sounds like I am on horseback in the wild untouched forests. The moment when you and your horse just gallop fast, almost loosing control is the feeling I get from this song. Listening your description of the box and energy just amazes me. I feel joy listening your descreption of all the images and feelings you get, because your passion for music shines bright at that moment. Keep up the reactions :)

Ah - one if my 2 faves ( live Ghost River too). The studio version of this song as performed by Anette was a good, clean and polished version. The beauty of Floor is that she takes Nightwish songs as sung by either Tarja or Anette and truly takes them to 11. This band us just unworthy great. Empuu never does any more or less than what the song needs. I love Kai. Jukka is an unbelievable showman and fantastic drummer and I was sad when he stepped back. Kai is in my opinion the only drummer who could have stepped in and carried on. Jukka was like the incredible hulk of the band and just smashed everything. Kai is Dr Strange - calm, cool and collected but equally effective.

this is the mid point of the "Vehicle of Spirit" tour for "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" the album they released in 2015. like i said before, NW's first time ever playing Wembley. was a week before Christmas. Tuomas said in an interview it was almost 18 years to the day of their first ever gig, a New Years Party. 17? 18? 19? their 20th anniversary album "Decades" (the 2018 show in B.A.) came after this, so was one of those. from the notes of another reactor, Tank The Tech, definitely worth a watch. guitar and pyro tech. Emppu has played that custom ESP EV - 1 guitar since he became exclusively sponsored by them in 2004. according to his guitar tech, they switch out all the hardware on it before each tour. Emppu fun facts: 5'3", Judo Master. Floor is every bit a super athlete like any other pro whatever doing it. she's a super heavyweight.

I didn't read down the comments too much, so I apologize if this has been brought up before. This song is based on a novel called Wolves of the Callah, part of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The series' main protagonist is a somewhat mysterious guy named Roland Deschain, known in the first book as only "The Gunslinger." The world he lives in has devolved into something approximating the old american west. When you were mentioning the thematic elements you were noticing and how they made you feel I was struck by how well Thuomas translated the themes of that world into his music to the point that you saw the imagery even though you weren't familiar with the book (if you were, I apologize, but you didn't say so.) That dude is a master of his craft.

Hey, Eric thanks for bringing the Noughtwish analysis to another level.. Tuomas was handed an amazing "musical instrument" when Floor Jansen joined Nightwish.

You're right. Nightwish isn't just for metalhead dudes in black t-shirts. I saw Nightwish at House of Blues in Orlando on the Endless Forms tour. As I'm standing in line for the doors to open, i turn around and there is this old couple, probably in their mid 70s. The guy was in his khaki shorts, bright orange polo shirt, Titleist ball cap looking like he was ready to hit the links, and his wife was equally dolled up in her summer yacht club gear. I kinda did a double take and actually had to ask: "are you sure you are in the right line?" Yup. They were there to see Nightwish. During the show, the wife was headbanging with the best of them. Great music is universal.

Great reaction and analysis of the song. I can't wait to see your reaction for two masterpieces. And after you have reacted maybe 20 songs, you notice how empty Your emotional chest is. You just enter the empty etheric feeling every time you hear NW. It is like nothing else matters anymore. It is happy feeling.

Not sure why you think Emppu would have been struggling with his guitarist identity in the mid to late 2000’s, as he, Tuomas, & Tarja were the founding members, old school friends. He looks sweet, & young, maybe that is why. Marco & Tuomas wrote this little diddy! I think he is great guitarist, that isn’t flashy, but always delivers perfection. I do believe this came out in Annette’s day.

You obviously know and understand a great deal about music 🎵🎶 and performing, and it's greatly appreciated, especially by me, a lifelong musician and performer, and I'm 72 years old now, but the one thing I want you to listen to and realize is that much more than any vocalist I've ever heard, and I've heard very many, is that Floor is so much better than anyone I've ever heard, she has the ability to change the vocal technique on a dime, within a song, to best fit what she is trying to express. She can change from classical technique to musical theater, to metal technique (or hard rock singer technique, and umpteen subtle variations of them, and others) purposely, even from note to note. I realize you don't like to compare, but if you add her incredible stage presence/command, and ability to express exactly what she feels and get people listening to understand what she is expressing and get inside the listener, she's clearly (to me) several levels better than anyone I've ever heard, period. And yes, the whole band is as close to perfect as possible. Just saying, listen closer to her, and you'll realize just how amazing she really is. Just saying.

Love your commentary. Spot on! You’re correct, this was written for Anette. You probably should check out something of hers, maybe Amaranth, Scaretale, or Meadows of Heaven, to get an idea of her abilities. Stick with the studio recordings. Keep exploring Nightwish. I’ll keep watching.

Just a couple comments... with regards to Marko and Floor's harmonies, it's just a fact that together, they are magical. They were 'born to sing together' so to speak. I recently watched another reactor do The Poet and the Pendulum, and he actually pointed out that Floor was doing a great job singing with a backing track... Army, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never known Floor to use or ever even need, a backing track. I believe what he was actually hearing was the perfection of the Floor/Marko harmonies...Marko has an amazing high register, and often, you almost can't hear him as a separate tone when he does those high harmonies! Not so for this track, but thought that was worth pointing out. Also, a note on how *tight* the whole band is performing these live shows... while writing and working on a.new album, the whole band go on a month or so long retreat, out in nature, just the band. The bonding that creates totally transfers to not just the album product, but also to every live show. I've heard many reactors say that the band seems to be having fun on stage...they actually are! They respect and enjoy one another, personally and professionally. You can't fake that live!
@impugnu78522 жыл бұрын
Nightwish are a symphonic metal band, so there is a backing track in most of the songs with Orchestra (the London Philharmonic) and choir. But there is no backing track for their own part: if Tuomas stops playing there is no piano of synths, if Kay stops there is no drum, if Floor stops singing there are no vocals (other then Marko or Troy). The choir can add harmonies but they are way in the back, like the violins horns etc.
@amygoodson-catlady2 жыл бұрын
@@impugnu7852 Oh yes, of course, that I understand. I was referring to a vocal backing track like Anette used to have bc her voice was so thin. I think what you're saying, is, no, Floor does not use a backing track of her own vocals to sing with...
