Always, when I hear the verse "And you .." I feel a fist in the plexus, and I shed tears. Nightwish is the only band that made me feel this way. You're not alone, Eric. There are other dumpsters in fire here.

Dear Eric, this is the mother of all NW songs. Always a joy to see a wrecked soul! Tuomas had an idyllic childhood and a warm, loving family. He was never a disappointment to his parents. But he was always different and "inside his head" with not many friends. Later years have produced happier songs and perhaps to some extent his "heart has found a home" with Johanna after a lot of heartache and searching. Life will reward you too.

The very best thing about Emppu is that he is a constant and consistent master of the concept that "less is more." There are waaaay too many guitarists that, in an effort to give themselves more of a spotlight, use every opportunity to outplay the song, the band, or even their last effort. Emppu has a master-level skill to blend the highest levels of talent with exactly what the song needs. He's not there to try and garner the spotlight only for himself. He's there to give his tonality to the desires of the song. There have been a number of Nightwish's songs where, upon my first time hearing it, I expected the guitar to come out with fast licks or long diatribes of flash along the fretboard and strings. Emppu never goes down that easy path. And yes, that would be an easy path for a player of his caliber. There's a noble character in that restraint. It's obvious that Emppu is among the highest levels of guitar players. He doesn't appear to try and prove it at every live opportunity.
@shadokat
@shadokat 2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love Emppu for that exact reason. He doesn't show off even though we all know he could. He is one of, if not THE most precise guitarists I've ever seen. He gives exactly what the song needs. The right tone, volume, speed, and emotion. He's the only one left in the band who has been there from the beginning with Tuomas. He knows exactly what was going on in his friend's life when every one of those songs was written, and he was also affected by whatever Tuomas felt. He plays everything perfectly. He doesn't make it all about him, his ego, or a need to put on a show. I respect him so much!

@@shadokat The observation of what Thuomas was experiencing when a song was written is key to Emppu's recreation on stage. He doesn't necessarily exactly recreate the studio versions, but he still stays within the bounds of the nature and the needs of the song.

Emppu and Tuomas has been best friends from very young ages and it was actually Emppu who said to Tuomas to ask Tarja to join the band as the singer. He is a person who loves to be on stage and let the quitar play but dosen't want to be on the front of the stage at all. Marko can leave the band and it can go on, but if Emppu goes I think it will mean more to Tuomas.

But with Floor, and their 2018 skills and production it was elevated to a whole new level. I'm positively surprised how much new life they could bring to this piece.

I have to say that you are by far my favorite reactor Eric. For me music is about emotions, lyrics that sometimes say what you can’t put into words, it brings people together, unites our souls? You bring all of this to the table, especially when you play a Nightwish song. I love Nightwish so much that I’m always ready for your next reaction to them before you even finish the one I’m listening to! Take care & god bless. 😊🙏💜💚

Yes. My Mom is hard of hearing, legally blind, has dementia, and is 102 years old. And with headphones, she is a Nightwish fan. When she listens, her eyes are closed, and her eyelids are showing REM(rapid eye movement). I want to know what she is seeing on her eyelids, but she is so enthralled, I can't bring myself to stop the music and ask her. This is one of her favorite songs(I think, because she doesn't remember hearing it before). How do I know? Because...tears.

Thanks Eric... At 61, I have seen, felt and heard quite a few bands... none have affected me the way Nightwish and Floor have. For myself, I've been locked away, emotionally for much of my life. 5 years ago my wife and I took in our two youngest grandchildren, our granddaughter only three days old. We raised them for almost three years and when they moved out...my walls came down...all at once. In those same moments, I stumbled upon Nightwish when surfing KZbin for anything to take my mind off the kids. My musical tastes have never been set or stagnant. My preference has been rock and metal. Discovering Nightwish during a seismic shift like the one I was experiencing created an emotional connection unlike any before. Every single time I hear GHOST LOVE SCORE, I'm wrecked. EVER DREAM... wrecked. HIGH HOPES... wrecked. DEAD BOYS POEM.. twice wrecked. You might start to see a pattern. Suffice it to say, Nightwish has that effect on SO MANY of their fans so it's not unheard of that another 'new' fan has a similar experience. I called my mom at 230 in the morning one day and the only thing I needed to know was that I had honored my mother and father. I never heard them say they were proud of me. I still wait for my father to say so. He's 76 this year and probably not many years left to speak those words. I graduated high school a year early and for my graduation gift, received luggage and a ride to the airport. I left home at 17 to enlist in the military and served 20 years. After my retirement my wife and I started a second career, bought my first home and raised two children. I now have seven grandchildren and been fully retired for 15 years. I never moved in with my parents after that first exodus at 17. Never borrowed money. Never laid my problems on their doorstep...my mom sends birthday and Christmas cards, but I haven't been invited to Thanksgiving since leaving in 1977... Tears can be cathartic, healing and cleansing. I feel ya brother. Honestly. Be well and be proud of the man you are and the husband I see that you are. For me that's all I want too.

Eric.. I love how you listen with your heart as well as your ears. Once again, my sincere condolences for your tragic loss. Tuomas wears his heart on his sleeve through his music. It's his biggest emotional outlet, or so it appears by what he writes. He gets to me, too. This band is special. It goes beyond talent, chemistry, and professional musicianship. These guys are so far beyond other artists in so many respects! Please don't feel embarrassed for reacting honestly to beautiful music. Never apologize for that. We are all kindred spirits here. I watched another reactor listen to this song a few days ago. Not only did it not move him, but he rated it one of his least favorite Nightwish songs. A far different reaction from yours to another of Tuomas's masterpieces (I think most of their songs are masterpieces). Thank you for putting yourself out there, something that most people simply would not do. I wasn't one of the people who requested this song but I'm sorry you were blindsided by it. We can never tell how someone will react to a piece of music, and I hope you'll forgive us by knowing that your soul has been brightened even by a beautiful song that makes you sad. She is still with you; she sees you crying and mourning for her and she loves you all the more for it. I'm sorry if I'm getting too personal but I'm only trying to convey how much I appreciate someone like you who has the courage to publish a video where he gives a strong emotional reaction like that and still lets us see it. Emppu just makes that guitar sing so beautifully. I also think he has a style like a metal Gilmour. So tasteful and no ego on display. You said it, This is a hypothetical situation being played out in this song. This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas' inner child speaking. When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..." Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. The swan is the guide to the afterlife in Finnish mythology. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with them to the other side. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny. We are not trying to GET you Eric. We are simply searching for intelligent and passionate music lovers willing to share their comments and emotions with all of us. Trust me, we are all shedding some tears with you and for the memory of your beloved wife. I agree about Emppu (guitarist). This song seems to also hit him in the feels very hard. Emppu is usually very cheerful on stage and I've only seen this video of the song being played live. Whether it be about Tuomas's reasons for writing the song or something in his own life, he definitely feels it a great deal.

So sorry about your loss. This is a very sad, but beautiful song. Look how stonefaced the always so cheerful Emppu is when doing his solo. And we all adults have some cracks in the mirror. It's called Life. 👍

Hi Eric, no need to apologise for having an emotional reaction to a powerful and deep song such as this, id be more worried if you didnt. I know Floor is an empath but i get a sneaking suspicion she has something else that allows her to make us feel the emotion at a base almost subconscious level. Keep up the great reactions, my sympathies and commiserations for your losses.

I actually thought no one could ever catch up to the artistic level of Pink Floyd. But after listening to 30+ different songs by Nightwish, my thought wrong. Pink Floyd are and always will be the masters of artrock or progressive rock, but in the genre of metal Nightwish is the pinnacle of evolution. Tuomas is a musical genius.

Storytime from Wacken 2013 to lift your spirits also it's fun to watch them especially Jukka because you can see how much they love playing this song it's something special and it makes your insides soar! It's Toumas paying tribute to the age-old custom of storytelling, a must watch!

Thank you so much for this one Eric. Talking about emotions, this was legit as hell! I have seen lots of misery during my 45 years of professional life in social psychiatry. Seen all the shit you can think of and even can't imagine. And nothing could touch or hurt me. After losing my best friend, 6 years ago I got stuck in emotions I didn't realise I had them. Weeping for a short time, got an accident with another good friend and got an heart attack. All survived and I just went on. Till I got to know Nightwish because of Floor. And so many times got crushed emotionally, I can't count. This song is a real breaker, Sing what you can't say, and you, I wish I didn't feel for you anymore; emotional breakdown. And please, never apologize for showing emotions. You got crushed when reacted to Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd's High Hopes, but manged to do what you wanted to do, give a honest reaction. Showing emotions is the highest form of honesty. So, stay true to yourself by staying honest. And stay strong Greetings

Emotions are reactions. That band just does it to you, me and many others. They are so good at bringing out or making you think about things in your life. That, like you said, they are nearly perfect in their musicianship and one can tell they all have a connection to the music and its theme (Emppu making sure he hit his mini solo perfectly). I think the fact that they have known each other for so long (some of them) and know just what the song needs is another thing that makes them special. And of course Floor. She exudes empathy. Fantastic song, fantastic reaction. I concur.

It tells volumes about this song that Emppu looks like his going to break to tears when he finishes his solo. Emppu is a guy who's able to smile widely to fans when playing the bloody Poet and the Pendulum. Who's normally on stage as joyful and cheery as a person can be.

the pandemic hit just as NW finished their latest album with Marco. being stuck at home, not touring, affected his mental health, and, brought some long simmering issues with the music business to a head, so he did what he needed to do. he said in his statement it was nothing personal with any member of the band.

Great reaction/review: don't worry, this one wrecks me EVERY time - no matter how many reactors I've seen react to it. As far as it being "unlistenable" any more, I hear ya, but... why deny yourself such beauty? I agree, this song cuts really deep, and brings up a lot of melancholy in, probably, every listener- but, isn't that what great art is supposed to do? I've realized this track is a healthy catharsis; great to "clean the pipes" every once in a while. What's truly amazing about Tuomas, in my opinion, is that his legacy will be his other worldy ability to compose so many great songs- while only using the basic colors in the musical crayon box: he doesn't dip into the big box of 64 - because he doesn't need to. He only illustrates with the 8 basics, and he's THE proof that there's still a lot of unexplored mileage left in this palette. That's the true GENIUS: He makes the universally familiar bold, fresh, and "NEW". And, add to that, the caliber of musicians that make up this band- you come to 1 simple conclusion: Nightwish = Untouchable.

Another commenter said that they are like gods... with instruments. Tuomas lays bare his heart and soul in this masterpiece, and it is sung by by one of the world's foremost empaths. Most reactors don't even hear the half of this work of art. There is so much here. No one else writes and performs like this. No one. Tuomas soars above the rest. I'm back with more since you get this at such deep, gut level. There is so much genius in this work that it is difficult to know where to begin. Everything, from the stage set to the lyrics to the music itself has a purpose. Floor's heart-rendingly beautiful performance is beyond comparison - only she could deliver the emotional truth of this work. There is so much more here to understand. Note the swans in the background - these are the swans of Tuonela, said in Finnish mythology to be the conveyors of souls to the afterlife. Note how the boy has his arms raised in the hope and the longing of embracing that journey, yet - there he remains. It's worth a listen to Sibelius' The Swan of Tuonela to see where part of Tuomas ' inspiration came from. Here's Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpvcfYqlf9ung6c. Exquisite. Emppu's ravishingly beautiful solo is David Gilmour class in the way it conveys the sadness, the anguish of a soul who has been left behind in a lonely and forsaken world. It's a cry of anguish, reinforced by the funereal march of the music behind and complementing the solo. You'll hear that same sort of expression in David Gilmour's last solo of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. I always felt that towards the end, it became the funeral march of a lost and tormented soul. All of the anguish and regret of something glimpsed and lost is distilled and channeled into one extended searing cry. So it is with Emppu's solo, yet it is so deftly and effortlessly woven into this masterpiece of Tuomas' that you don't quite realize what it's doing to you. Note that there is none of Emppu's usual smirking or goofing around in this one. He is dead serious (excuse the pun) and it shows in his expression. So much so that he has to turn away from the audience when he is done. And then there's Floor. This is the most emotional performance I have yet seen from her. She feels all of the passion, sorrow, despair, longing and even anger in every note of this epic piece. She becomes the song and then she sings right into your soul and utterly wrecks it. It hits so hard. If this doesn't have tears streaming down your face, then you have no understanding and no soul.
