No, the correct translation is "A Lifetime of War". You missed a lot of the context of the song, though. They're singing about the Swedish (and they are Swedish, not German) "Great War" and the specific horrors of generational conscription that occurred during it. But it's no wonder, because the translated subtitles in the video are also quite atrocious. "A Lifetime in War" is not a sentence that makes sense in English, even though it might appear to.

The Swedish version of this song is sadness, the English version is anger. The 30 years war that they speak about is something that took Europe almost 200 years to recover from. It was probably about 2-4 times worse than WW2 in terms of percentage of the total population killed. The songs really bring just how bad that war was to the front.

The most emotional part about this song is the fact the soldier is "young, barely a man" because it takes place during the 1600s that meant the soldier could've been anywhere from 15 to 20, a teenager not knowing wether or not he'll be able to see his family again, wondering if he will be mourned, if his death will be dignified.

Some of their songs taught me about some very amazing moments in history, such as the Night Witches, The Last Battle, The Smoking Snakes, Inmate 4859, and Hearts of Iron. Others, like this, No Bullets Fly, and Soldier of Heaven stir some very deep emotions.

This album has two versions: in english and in swedish. This song in english is about the 30 years war, but in swedish is about those who participated in the war. A totaly different mood, sadder. Looking forward for new reactions for sabaton songs 🤟

(Second comment) - Yes it was the crowds mobile phones, before the song Joakim said something about people not having Cigarette lighters any more, "...but almost all of you have a mobile phone, so if you pick that up, and turn on the torch..." The Scandinavium Arena in Gothenburg - The primary use is for Ice Hockey but it is also used for Handball and other things, the capacity in this Concert configuration is about 11.000. A Lifetime At War - The song is about the 30 Year War in Europe. You were born and drafted in to the Infantry at an early age, around 15 or so (Drummer Boys was even younger than that, only 8 - 9 - 10 years old). The normal Life Expectancy during that time was only about 45, and soldiers was usually dying at a much younger age so during your Lifetime you didn't know anything else than the war in the World, you never got to see the World at a state of Peace. So - "A Lifetime At War". Glad you liked this video. Me as a non Swedisch speacker (comming from Germany) I love that Swedish version of the song especially as this was filmed in Gothenburg which is basicaly theire hometown and this is what they normally do. They have basicly songs for events from every county so when they play in Gemany they play the German related songs, if they are in Poland they plaey the Polend related songs. That's makes theire sets always diffrent! Drummer btw is married to a quite famous other femal Metal musitian, just saying ;-)

Gothenburg basically their home town? The band is originally from the city of Falun which is almost 500 km away from Gothenburg. It's like saying that Hamburg would "basically" be the home town for a person from Dresden. =P

@@agnieszkazuk He is the only one that grew up some what close since he's from Skövde which is about 160 km away by road. I assume it's also quite possible he lived in Gothenburg for a couple of years. His old band Evergrey is for an example Gothenburg based. Joakim and Pär are however both from Falun. Chris is from Umeå and Tommy is from Boden which are both way up in the north. The distance (road) between Gothenburg and Umeå is almost 1000 km and Boden is closer to 1300 km. Driving from Gothenburg to Dresden Germany would actually be closer than driving to Umeå. =P

Not sure if it's been mentioned on other Sabaton reactions you've done (apologies if this is the case) but as well as their band/music channel, they have a history channel where a historian explains the context of the songs and gives a potted history of the settings. It's well worth a look. Anyway, Sabaton always have great audience participation, their songs are very 'singable' - and especially when performing in the country the song is set in, of course. Also it's slightly surreal how all over the world you can get people singing about Charles Xii of Sweden (Carolus Rex)!

This is what you can experience at some concerts especially in Scandinavian - the audience almost taking over. And whenever it happens, it's a mind blowing experience to both the audience and the band. We all gets humble! And Sabaton are one of best bands to achieve this.

Yeah it's phones. Joakim said that since people dont have lighters anymore but everyone has phones you can get the same effect if people light up the screen and wanted us to sing the song with him. He then went on and said they where going to perform in Stockholm the day after and where going to do the same thing there, and pretty much challanged us to prove that Gotheburg is the metal capital of Sweden. Was there, turned out to be the last concert for years, was less than a week after this things started to shut down in Europe. Amazing show. Sweden hasn't been in war for like 200 years, but this song hits very hard anyway.

Just wanted to point out the song title is in Swedish, not German. Also Gothenburg is the German and English name used of the Swedish city of Göteborg so it's ok for you to pronounce it "the English way" :D

Great analysis of this band and concert. The vibes Sabaton creates is so unique. Speaking of vibes, have you noticed the Nightwish concert video from Hellfest 2022 in France last Saturday? Absolutely amazing! It’s a professional TV production by a french station (arte) and the picture and sound quality is mind blowing. The video is separated into chapters with the song titles. So maybe you could pick separate songs and use them for reaction videos. I recommend „I want my tears back“ around halfway of the concert. Floor unleashing the valkyrie and giving a lesson in crowd control. Plus Troy singing parts of the song, which is interesting too. Highly recommended.

My first live show experience was at their performance on the north american section of The Great Tour. They were playing in Toronto at Danforth Hall and they did a similar no-instrument section during the chorus of "Price of a Mile". Briefly it sounded like that entire auditorium sang with a single voice, I tear up almost every time I remember. I never miss a show with them if I can help it.

Just a side note now that you are officially finding your way very positively through the European metal scene I just want to add that a lot of these bands that I've come across don't just have one really really good singer they have at least 2 and we have seen that with Nightwish and definitely some other bands and I'm saying that because Tommy Johansson has an amazing voice also........ He has been I believe a lead singer or at least a backup vocalist who did a lot of singing in some of his former bands I'm sure someone on here will know more about it than I do and by the way he is just a great guy who has incredible talents.

Tommy is the lead singer in Majestica, band or actually just started as a single project for Tommy known as Reinxeed. He also has done a lot of covers like "Swedish hits goes metal".

Tommy Johansson, as you mention here,can now celebrate 20 years as an artist. He started his first band at 14. As well as being lead guitarist and back-up vocalist for Sabaton he has his own band Majestica (former ReinXeed). He also arranges some of the music Floor Jansen does on her own. On top of all that he has his own channel where he weekly releases solowork, guitar, bass, keyboard and vocals. He covers several artist as well as for fun taking Sabaton lyrics into Disney music. Well worth checking out.

Man, I freaking love Sabaton! I'm ashamed to say I only became interested in them because of Floor and Hannes being married. But I'm trying to learn more about them. I would love to see a Sabaton/Nightwish show, but I would want Nightwish to headline. Joachim is such a charismatic front man, and I just love him! I can't figure out how to pronounce his name, either. Hannes is a bit of a showman too, and I love his drumming. There's a lot of gorgeous hair flipping around on that stage, and I'm envious. Sabaton is a band whose sound I love and I want to hear a lot more. Thank you for featuring them. Great insight, as always. Looking forward to your next video. Sabaton are touring Australia in early December with 3 shows. They do a homage to the ANZAC soldiers with the song - “cliffs of Galipoli” the failed capture of Turkey by the British forces and their allies which included Australia and New Zealand.

For instance the band Civil War, which some call Sabaton part 2, cause most of their members are former members of Sabaton. If you prefer a bit heavier music you have Ex Deo who writes about roman history, Spartan writing about Ancient Greece, 1914 who deals with WW1, Metal de Facto with roman history.

As they like to say on The Internet, "There's a lot to unpack here." One thing I don't hear commented on a lot is the two bits between Joakim (YO-uh-keem) and Par (I don't have an umlaut on my keyboard but it's pronounced more like "pair" or "pear"). First they're absolutely flabbergasted by the audience singing all the lyrics. Notice their body language, like they're saying "What is going on?" They clearly weren't expecting an audience response of this magnitude. Later there's a bit where Par takes a bow during the bridge or chorus or whatever, basically upstages Joakim and Joakim, being the frontman/lead singer, doesn't seem to take this too well. I'm sure it was in good fun but you do see that occasional back-and-forth. Also pay special attention to Tommy Johanssen addressing the camera during that break in the lyrics. It's brief but it's pretty cool. Another note as an Air Force veteran. It was strange listening to this and being unsure if this song applied to me or not. I was in Grand Forks when I discovered this specific video/recording. I thought about a few different things. I thought about war, which seemed odd since I've never been shot at. Then I thought about home, and that was a lot more relevant since I spent years away from home. Not only that, but home isn't really home for me anymore. I lived in a certain place for most of my life but my brother moved, then my parents moved, and I was at least in a foreign country, at worst some random hole in the desert. Then finally you come back and your friends have changed, your brother's married, parents moved, your dad can't hold a conversation anymore, and the house you lived in for 26 years is empty. So it's a weird little observation but "home" doesn't have the same meaning anymore. So I agree with you, "home" is profound. Anyway, I thought the song was good when I heard it on Carolus Rex, but once I saw it in this video I decided it was probably the best live performance I've ever seen.

The crowd interaction was expected, and it was expected to blow everybodys mind. Why I say it? On their tour 2012 when they were at this very same venue the crowd did this same thing. That time we were not that many as inthis show but a lot still. And it felt like Joakim was moved by it then. So it was no lucky shot that this song was filmed in this place on this occation. Stockholm (the capital of Sweden, Gothenburg is the 2nd city) did a great work too but that was a smaller venue with half the audience compared to this one so.....

Joakims intro to the song is "My friends, lets sing together", and yes that is phones. As far as i know, these videos from stage was made for Sabatons Social media during the Great War tour, but during Corona, they were reedited to actual music videos so they would have content for their youtube channel. I would like to recomend "Devil Dogs" and i would like to recomend doing the official video, it's made as a montage from their last US tour before Corona, and it shows a lot about how varied their audience is, and it is a fucking great song.

Some suggestions, To Hell and Back, About Audie Murphy, Primo Victoria, about D day, or No bullets Fly, specifically the Yarn Hub video, a true story that you need to discover for yourself. AS for this song it is about the 30 years war, this song has two sets of lyrics, the English lyrics are very broad in the historic contexts, the Swedish lyrics are very intimate to a swedish soldier, often a child borne in the armies trains, would be baptized, trained and died without seeing Sweden, his whole of his life was the 30 years war,

Tank did a podcast with Joakim Broden a while back and he gave Joakim the basics of what Sabaton can expect at The Ryman. I really feel the need to suggest this again 😉, No bullets fly from Sabaton but with the video they did with Yarnhub (it just adds so much more to the story). Also several other bands have incorporated history of warfare into some of their songs but not as specific as Sabaton does (Passchendaele, The Trooper, Aces High, Tailgunner and The Longest Day from Iron Maiden come to mind)

First time viewer here, just wanted to give you a couple of fun facts about the song. This song was about the 30 years war specifically the perspective of a Swedish conscript. The 30 years war was a conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and Protestants, during this war is generally accepted that Sweden became a great power during this time. Sweden at the time was unique due to how it fielded soldiers, Unlike the majority of nations at the time who generally fielded mercenaries who were already trained and familiar with war, Sweden had a system in which land owners conscripted the peasants who lived on their land to fight for the nation. The result of this was that entire peasant families went on the march into this war, a man could have a son with his wife outside of Sweden during the course of this war and lose that son in the exact same war that he himself fought in, Without that child ever actually setting foot in the land that he died for. There is actually an English version of this song, except that version of the song is told from the perspective of an outsider looking into Europe during this time. It is also an incredible song, though it’s meaning is not as deep as this version of the song. If you like Sabaton, and you do enjoy watching live videos, I strongly recommend that you watch Sabaton performing live in front of between 500 and 700,000 people in Poland during Polish Woodstock Inn 2012, uprising and 40 to 1 are incredible songs and very much worth the time.

It's not German. It is Swedish as all the members of the band are, and it is referring to the 30 years' war that Sweden was involved in during the 1600's. Catholics against Protestants.

Well if you struggle with Gothenburg perhaps you should try the Swedish name Göteborg instead? ;) It's pronounced goth as in gothic. Göteborg would pretty much translate to "the castle/keep of the goths". Göte = Goth/Geat.
