The genius of this song and most U2 songs is you can take them as the literal meaning (Judas/Jesus) or it can be relatable or any personal relationship. Not many pull this off as great as U2.
@anthonykladitis363 жыл бұрын

@stephenporter5076 Жыл бұрын
This is the beginning of U2's postmodern ironic phase. They got skewered in the press after Rattle and Hum for being upstart goody two-shoes, so they responded by becoming a near parody of the stereotypical "Rockstars". So its helpful for interpretation to know that they are playing at being the villian. A song from the viewpoint of Judas fits that paradigm, and that's why the song feels sensual and slinky and you can forgive some shameless self-promotion in the video. Our Judas thinks himself a posh, cool character. It's a fantastic way to say the opposite of what you mean.

Before Bono had written the lyrics, the song started out life called 'I Feel Free (69)'... with lines like "Free as a bee... free as a bird...", and was a much lighter affair, though still very enjoyable. However, it became a masterpiece when Bono wrote the final lyrics... indeed a deep dark psychological drama about betrayal using the dramatic events in the Garden of Gethsemane as a reference point. As always with U2, there's blood in the music, and this one is right up there... as deep as it gets.

@@brianmonticello5510 Yep, have had the Salome silvers since before AB came out and The New U2 vinyl LP set. There's also a 7 disc version of Salome that dropped later on, most of the additional material are Rickenbacker overdubs on the track Salome itself... I think from Bono, plus a load of of fairly uninteresting drum/synth patterns. The full version of Sick For Love is on ther, plus an early demo of TTTYAATW played for Daniel Lanois.

This was great! I watched the video and this is what I saw: The video showed me Judas thought he was surprising Jesus, (spiked drink= the betrayal). Turned out, when he actually went through with it and thought he had gotten one over on Jesus, when he looked into the innocence and saw Jesus’ heart break, he immediately regretted what he had done. He reached out to retract what he had done, but it was to late. Then Judas found himself wrapped in his own web, & knew he trapped himself (cellophane wrap). Then he drowned in his own sorrow knowing he had betrayed the only other person who loved him, besides himself (arms wrapped around himself).

Until The End Of The World is one of U2s finest. Once again Christians display their aptitude for a provincial imagination with respects to art. The backing track for this song is neither joyful or jolly. Lyrically it is miles beyond most of what is being uttered in popular music today. As far as the video is concerned, what did you expect? A video with Jesus in it? I’m a born again Christian just like you but I still love good art. This sonically mind bending and achingly beautiful album should be experience by anyone with an open heart..

U2 is a very religious band (well, except Adam the bass player - ironic 😂) & lots of their songs are studied in churches. They nearly broke up at one time because they were so conflicted about the rock & roll lifestyle vs their Faith. Bono even got Pat Robertson to accept that contracting AIDS was not a sin. And of course, he raised millions for hunger, medical assistance, clean water, in Africa. He also convinced The World Bank to cancel debts owed by poor countries that could barely pay the interest on those loans. He gets a lot of flack for being a loudmouth & self promotion, but the man gets things done. Live songs are much better than fan made ones!
