I grew up with this music, this was my first introduction to metal. Black sabbath and Led zeppelin was the first bands pushing the new boundries but same time Queen and Sweet was also making songs that was pushing to new areas of music, with the layerings of singing and sutch. Sweet is the band that made me start playing the drums and later went to metal listening, Another band who was heavily influenced by this band was Accept.

Love the choices - the riff from Blockbuster was the same as Bowie's Jean Genie :-) Not complaining as I love both songs - but neither are the classic "official" versions. Looking forward to the next Sweet Sunday! Keep up your amazing reviews Sarahrae

Would love to see your reaction to earlier material - the bubblegum era. Wig Wam Bam and Turn it Down would be a great combo.... Little Willy and Burn on the Flame..... just love Sweet Sundays. Also - I Wanna Be Committed - the last song penned for them by Chinn Chapman - great track with yet again a different sound.

This is not the original version of Blockbuster ( or the uk single version ). The Steve priest vocal part are different amongst a few differences

Don't know very many Sweet songs. Blockbuster There's few different interpretations what this song means 1. About a stalker, someone that the cops can't stop. 2. Buster is a guy who goes around stealing other people's women 3. Block buster bombs of WW2. I think it's the first. In December 1973, David Bowie's "The Jean Genie" peaked at #2 in the UK charts. The following month, this song went one better going all the way to #1. Both songs used the same Yardbirds riff from Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man." Guitarist Andy Scott recalled to Uncut the band's panicked reaction after an A&R man played them "Jean Genie." "We sat there with horrified looks on our faces. The guy asked what was wrong, and we said 'That's the same f---ing guitar riff as Blockbuster" He said, 'Well, it's quite similar isn't it?' 'It's the f---ing same!' I got on the blower to Nicky Chinn and said, 'We can't release this.' He said, 'Don't worry, they're completely different kinds of records and I predict this will be a number one.' I thought, 'Good luck with that.' But he was proved right. A few weeks later, we were at number one and Bowie was at number two." Source: Songfacts Fever of Lover Looking at the lyrics I think it's about a guy that didn't realize how he felt about a girl until years later he realized he loved her and she didn't let him know how she felt about him.

Both of these songs charted in jan 1973 where Bowie reached number 2 a few weeks later sweet hit number 1

@@stephenwilliams7833 Bowie's hit the chart in 1972, it spent 4 weeks in the top 40 before reaching the top 10 in the first week of 1973. I never understood why it wasn't number 1 on the "official" chart, since it was number 1 on the charts of NME, Melody Maker, Radio Luxembourg, etc... but well, unlike Sweet, Bowie was more of an album artist. Sweet's "Blockbuster" spent 5 weeks at number 1 on the singles chart, while "Aladdin Sane", from which the single "Jean Genie" was taken, spent 5 weeks at number 1 on the albums chart. Glam dominated EVERYTHING in 1973.
