I also prefer the one on the album. I felt like the empty space made the song all the more special and when that space was filled with the orchestra it made it feel not as special or emotional. Will definitely keep listening to the one on the album!

I feel like this version matches the emotion of the song better. The song isn't a fairytale. The song is about how everything is wrong and she doesn't belong there and she wants him to take her to the lakes but not about actually being there and having the life she wants. Like I like the album version better probably and I think it suits the album better but overall I think this vibe is more what the song actually is because it isn't fairytale (althought I definitely don't feel peace from the album production or fairytale vibe so :D but yes, more than from this).

"That's not it" "Thank you so much for saying it before me" 😂 I agree. That's not it, and not only as an album track, but as a stand-alone song as well. I love strings, but I don't think this version captured the energy of the lyrics. It seems to me this is one of those cases where less means more. Also, hearing the original version just highlights how good Taylor is at what she does. She always knows when her work is already complete and when she can still draw on every drop of her creativity to sculpt perfection. I still love that we're getting the original one tho! And I really liked the additional verse at the end.

Totally agree with you folks! The real version is so much better at capturing the feeling of the song! You get the soft intro and it builds and makes the bridge that much more powerful! The change throughout is so necessary and tugs on my heartstrings, whereas this one is too much and you don’t get the build in the same way! Also yes please to long pond sessions!!! although you can see how the production was more "simpler" and appropriate, i love this version so much, from the loop of the garden, and lyrics, it almost does remind me more of a gardenia atmosphere which is what i expected more to feel it from the original, love it so much :)

How am I just finding this video out?? 😭 loved the reaction!! Funny story tho, when the deluxe version of folklore originally came out, I kid you not, I was not in the loop and I never knew about the lakes, UNTIL a couple of months ago. It was by accident, but I ran into the original version first, and not the one on the album. To me, the one that was released first sounds out of place, but this version is what I’m more familiar and prefer the most.

I got the same impression that it sounded like born to die! Listen up though, I feel like this production makes the song sound more like Out of the Woods vibe, this sort of upbeat escapism. However, I think that in Folklore, Taylor wanted to escape from that popstar lifestyle, thus stripping down this song, making it take a whole other meaning and leaving her old pop music aside. Out of the woods is more anxious, reflecting her life of extreme fame at the time, whereas the lakes just wants to stay right there where she is, it’s much more peaceful and almost grateful for the stillness of her life in the pandemic, wanting it to continue forever. It’s a continuation of relaxing, imaginative escapism rather than the act of anxiously running away itself.

It's so weird seeing other people say they don't like this version of the lakes omg like...
