This song plus your comment broke me. My father and mother started dating when she was 13 he was 16 (1963), they dated for four years and he went to Vietnam, before he left they got married. My mother passed away in 2005, the night she passed I found my dad with a bottle of whiskey listening to this song. I commend you and your wife for your happy marriage, that has taken and still does, a lot of hard work. If I can add anything for any couple, after watching my parents for the 22 years I had with both, especially in the last days; Make sure she hears you and sees that you love her, but I think more importantly, if you have kids- let them see you flirt and love on their momma. My parents were from an older generation and if I hadn’t been able to see my father care for my mother those last two weeks, I don’t know if I would have believed they were in love. But they definitely were and my dad was never the same.

Right there with you! Lamar is correct about how amazing it is to encounter a song that can evoke such a powerful response. Lamar, if you happen to read this comment, I would recommend “How Can I Help You to Say Goodbye” by Patty Loveless. THAT song affects me every time I hear it.

Older country music has quite a few good ones, especially from the late 80's to the early 2000's. After that and it started to go more towards southern pop and just kinda went downhill in my opinion.

As a guy who was brought up with "I'll give you a reason to cry", I rarely cry in real life situations, even when my heart is tortured. But movies, tv shows, music... I become part of the story and fall apart. I hate when that happens to me, but I can't help but head straight for the same thing all over again. Butterfly Kisses and Tell Laura I Love Her have the same effect on me.

One of my all time favorite country songs. It catches everyone off guard the first time and i still get goosebumps every time i hear it. That being said, most people (including myself) dont realize that Tim is NOT just repeating the opening lines at the end of the song. It's actually Johnny and his girl (she survived) taking the new little Johnny fishing. You can even see the girl/mom run up to them at the end if you watch the official music video.

This song hits me hard cause it’s so much like my life. I was with my husband since I was 16, he was my first everything. We got married, had a beautiful baby girl and he died of cancer on New Year’s Eve 2017. I wished I could take all that pain away from him the 3 years I was his care taker, I would have gone through all of his pain just so he didn’t have to suffer. That’s true love. There’s country as a culture and country as a music genre. Remember a genre is defined as a category based off the sound of the music. How can everything we call country music actually be country if the sound varies so much? Lots of music would fit better in other genres. For example in 1989, Copperhead Road by Steve Earle was considered country but was mostly played on rock radio stations

I'm 47 years old! Don't take the Girl is on the play list of early early 20's! Lets me honest if we take a minute to think about each stage of our life has it's own play list! Not one of us can say we haven't ever heard a song and had it take us right back to a certain moment in time a particular night a great realationship or a bad break up! We all have a sound track to our lives! How ever there are songs then there are GREAT SONGS! Don't take the Girl it's one of the Greats! Much like so many more of you I cried the first time I heard it and more than so many years later I still cry every time! That's great music any piece of art be it poetry, a painting, a passage in a book, Graffiti or a Mural one equally as thought provoking as the next if intended as art, or simple country song or and piece of music that truly touches the soul any song that brings tears touches us all some place deep! That's a great song a great piece of art that's the good stuff if you ask me anyway!! Every one Stay Safe Stay Strong Stay True Stay Blessed!!

NO, SHE DID DIE. The girl at the end seen with the picnic basket was another little 8 year old girl who is going fishing with the now 8 year old baby, named Johnny like his father, just like the start of the song, basically history repeating with the new generation. THE WIFE DIES, and the story repeats. Seriously, you can easily google the information about the truth of this song and its video.

Also, and I am trying to say this in the most appropriate way as possible, she has boobs lol PLUS, as you said.. seriously, you can just google this stuff... this is from googling it...The music video shows that Johnny's wife does indeed survive as she is seen in the last scene running to meet Johnny and his little boy with a picnic basket. The song ends with a repeat of the song's opening line: "Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin' when he was eight years old".
