God I love this country. We're crazy and wild, and I absolutely love it. The things people think insults us is what I think gives us personality. This German girl I watch summed us up this way "In Germany when you tell people you want to do something they say 'why would you do such a thing' and in America they say 'why not'?" Why not fry alligators? Why not fry rattlesnake? Why not have a dog dive for a frisbee? We'd like to eat a pizza while walking around....hey, let's put it on a stick. Oh look, an oreo...let's fry it. 😂 Brits have had the same beans on toast for generations. Americans would've already flipped that on its head.

Used to go to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo all the time. As trailriders we rode in the parade every year leading up to the first day of the rodeo. It's Texas. If a critter doesn't run fast enough then I guarantee that some Texan somewhere has tried to smoke it, grill it or fry it.

I'm in Oklahoma and rodeo is a HUGE thing. My late mother grew up on a ranch in Nebraska. She cooked for ranch hands. Rodeos developed as a way for cowboys to show who is best. My preference are real working cowboy rodeos.

FLORIDA MAN HERE! I will confess, I've never been to a rodeo, so while I can't tell you that fried rattlesnake isn't common at rodeos, it's *DEFINITELY* not common anywhere else in the rest of the United States. I'm pretty sure that something like "fried rattlesnake" would be the equivalent of jellied eels or haggis: it was very likely originally based on a dare.

It is actually The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) members show and sell their animals to earn money for college (university). It includes a carnival and a concert every night (and some matinees). The proceeds also go toward scholarships.

They DO do a bunch of Korean episodes which are worth checking out, they’ve taken both British high schoolers and rappers there, as well as the Italian chef friend in this phone call too. Also both the US and Korea DO have corndogs, they are COMPLETELY different and only share being fried in common. American ones are made with ground cornmeal, and usually only feature some form of hot dog or sausage inside, even then very rarely you can find some filled with cheese. Korean ones are made with rice flour, and as such they have no actual flavor so the Korean ones tend to be made with more outside flavors. Like sugar on the outside, or squid ink inside the batter, sometimes even potatoes or seasonings as well.I’d recommend watching a lot of their videos, because Josh has traveled a lot even without Ollie and he’s familiar on finding places the locals love. And Ollie is always so friendly and joking that he’s also very good at making friends and connections. Together they’re an incredible team that shows a lot of things the general “visiting USA for the first time!” will never see or experience.

People don't go to the rodeo for a few hours. They stay all day and go to the concerts in the evening. I usually go to the rodeo three or four days each year. Too much action for just one day.

You might have a look at Cheyenne Frontier Days, if this interests you. Cheyenne, Wyoming is *DEEP* in the heart of proper American cowboy country. The Frontier Days event celebrates all things Western. The rodeo itself is the largest *entirely outdoor* rodeo competition in the world. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Cheyenne, which is a "city" of about 65,000 year round inhabitants. The city itself lies at the north extremity of the Front Range Corridor, where the Great Plains end and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains begin. It is roughly two hours driving distance north of Denver. FYI

This is the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. If Jolly would have a ticket to the large rodeo they would be able to see a Concert from a Large Country or Rock Star. The larger Rodeo is under the big stadium and Jolly only sees the small portion and fair.

The Houston Rodeo is a huge event. Many trail riders will travel miles to Houston as well. It’s been interesting seeing people riding through town on horses and chuck wagons in tow. Also, children will raise animals to show and sell through a school program called 4H. A lot of the kids involved in the mutton busting have been around farm animals their entire life.

I don’t think our corn dogs are the same as Korean corn dogs.. they put sugar on theirs but u don’t need to do that, because our batter is sweetened cornmeal batter.. you wouldn’t see sugar as a condiment, we just do ketchup and mustard, I’ve seen other sauces but never sugar. I love how you’ve slipped into this try American food genre 💜💜
@jishani1

our corn dogs are made with a cornmeal batter, hence the name corndog. korean corn dogs generally aren't. they're a rice or other starch batter, but they incorporate cheese and other things into theirs while american corn dogs generally don't.

TLDR: Me, personally, i love going. I go 2-3 times a year but I know a lot of people who go once a year/few years or never at all. That depends on each person but I love taking people who have never attended. Worth the experience. the too long part.... more details on this rodeo specifically if anyone is interested in this one The Houston Rodeo is about 2-3 weeks long around feb/march every year. Ollie and Josh here visited the grounds that are open all day and that includes a carnival, a lot of food, and a lot of vendors. In the evenings inside the stadium (avg 60-74k nightly) each rodeo ends with a performance, usually big country, pop, edm, tejano/hispanic artists/bands. In the actual rodeo you'll see the bull riding, bare back riding, more mutton bustin, and i think like 10-15 different rodeo events nightly with prize money for the competitors. They basically do a mini tournament for each rodeo ewvent until the rodeo ends with group stages/semis/finals until end of the rodeo. Those competitors get paid very nicely. The rodeo actually starts with trail rides from around the state that lead to Houston and from there, we have 3 days of BBQ competition, even wine competition and then the rodeo and livestock competition actually starts. This rodeo likes shows the importance of livestock and preservation of animals and that way of life as well. The big thing about the Houston Rodeo is the amount of scholarship money they award each year to students towards college and even towards raising livestock they can enter into next year's competition. My fav part of the rodeo is the art display where children from around the area enter their drawings from Pre-K all the way to end of high school. Those kids can draw. It's impossible to see the whole thing all in one day so that's why I like going in multiple days to check out what events they have happening every day. They are also county rodeos all over the state which are very similar to what you saw in the other video, we have those too in every major county or city... This specific rodeo just happens to be the "richest" rodeo in the US so it's def more touristy compared to a county rodeo. The one in Calgary, Canada might be bigger than this one.. i think they go off attendance numbers or prize money or something like that.

I have been to a very small rodeo on one of the poorest plots of land in the US - a First Nation Reservation. I’ve also been to the one Jolly is filming. It struck me as a big noisy smelly singles bar. Pretty women with a pound of eye makeup, incredibly tight jeans and cleavage showing through their sequined satin “cowboy shirts” and equally pretty boys in similarly flamboyant dress. Never saw a diving dog but I did see as a child a white horse diving from a platform at I think Atlantic City (I’m 73 and the rememberer doesn’t work so well anymore). It’s almost a sure thing that rodeos will eventually cease. It’s a tough argument that it’s not cruelty to animals. They are flashy, exciting, and gritty. But they leave me with a bad taste.
