I think a lot of it had to do with Clapton. After a LOT of years of playing it safe, he knew that this would be the last time he played with his old friends, so he REALLY played his heart out. The way he used to.

since words in music critiques are opinions, Vanila Fudge, for me, was the first 'supergroup', and a super group of all musical originals, the musicians. Many famous bands drew huge inspiration from, and tried to do what Vanilla Fudge did, and VF's impact was greatest on many great players of the time. HOWEVER, Cream Was a SUPERGROUP, and playing their own brand of music no one had heard before, They were musical giants, seemingly above all others. My opinions, my impressions, from feeling it all as it happened. But it comes down to one's taste, obviously.

This series of reunion concerts in 2005 was remarkable especially considering Jack Bruce's failing health. But as always I strongly recommend that you listen to the original album versions.

The is pretty impressive considering all the overdubs in the studio version. Cream live (I saw them in 1968) was a different experience than Cream in the studio. This captures the improvisational feel of the band and the continuing chemistry of the players even at their advanced ages. I think one of the downfalls of rock's creativity was the increasing expectation that the live version HAD to sound like the studio version. These were musicians who cut their teeth on improvisation. It seems a shame to not experience those skills-that was Cream's major gift to rock, and live improv is music's life blood, IMHO.

Also I believe Jack Bruce had a organ transplant some time before the reunion so he himself was not in the greatest of health. Also on this night Eric himself was sick and also was playing with a broken finger so they still killed it despite all the myriad of health issues these gentleman were facing.

They rehearsed hard for several weeks for this series of concerts to not let down their fans or themselves or their heritage. As mentioned Bruce was quite ill, and Baker was fighting arthritis, it took him a long time to warm up and get moving before every gig, but his sense of time was still perfect - as musicians they all had perfect time. Baker always said Cream was a group of jazz musicians that played some rock and blues.

Great band! They still had it almost 40 years later, but it’s hard to imagine the impact Cream had when they burst onto the scene in 1966. They were the INAUGURAL power trio. And an original jam band.Do a deep dive, and at least listen to their Farewell Cream Live album from when they broke up. ✌️❤️🎶

The big things missing from the live version that you might enjoy hearing in the studio version (on the "Wheels Of Fire" album) are Jack Bruce's falsetto (?) singing, Clapton's amazing wah-wah guitar solo and the use of a mellotron in the parts before the solo. These give White Room an ominous, almost scary, feel.

Jack Bruce was playing a fretless bass that allowed him to slide between notes when he wanted to. I think a fretless bass is an advantage for most songs. He also used a "regular" fretted bass for some songs at this concert.

I saw this concert when it first came out…I was blown away at how tight they still were together…There was such power in their playing…Bruce’s vocals were spot on…Baker what can I say…whew…Clapton is forever a master…Brilliant…

I remember a Clapton interview some time after this, he said that they spent weeks rehearsing and getting the main changes correct and tight. They played another concert in US about 9 months after this I think, Clapton said they only spent a couple of days rehearsing for that one and he was very disappointed with the results.

Bruce is/was one of the few rock bassists to play a fretless bass not just for show, he actually plays it on all strings and neck positions. He probably player fretted necks more than the fretless. He is one of my all time favourite musicians, I have every one of his albums.

I think "we're going wrong" is one of Creams best songs, tracks and live performances...But from these May 2005 shows in London, "Stormy Monday" on 5th May stands out for me.

What a supergroup they had been - this was a last concert after many years apart. Eric Clapton in their day as a functioning band used to have a graffiti:’ Clapton is god.’ Ginger Baker on the drums was a genius but a difficult human being and hated Jack Bruce on bass … a friend of mine had the dubious distinction of having Ginger threaten to push him down stairs just for looking at him. Now you’d find it really interesting to see their Farewell Concert also at the Royal Albert Hall - Jacks voice then was much higher. Its a strong performance given many factors. One they hadnt performed but once together in 37 years, the singers many health struggles, age. Just to name a few. Its quite a good concert as a whole, in the blues rock genre.

The very first power trio that was amazing but for a short time, maybe 3 or 4 years and only 4 albums released but inspired other power trios to come about like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, then later on and several years on Rush came about, Triumph, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush to name a few. Cream in the 4 albums they had were all awesome albums I still have the LPs in mint condition. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck were very good friends and have been Jammin together since The Yardbirds which is also an amazing band from the early '60s

Fun fact. Eric persuaded them to do four shows at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005 because that was where they had done their last concert in 1968. The tickets for all four shows sold out within one hour of going on sale.

The legend that is Eric Clapton - a member of five great bands, The Yardbirds, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos and a long solo career. This performance, with them all aged in their 60s, was 39 years after Eric, Jack and Ginger formed what is considered to be the first power trio and supergroup, with each member being a renowned master of their instrument. RIP Jack and Ginger.

These three are just unreal GOOD. Please note some of Jack's basses had NO fret bars. Yet he hit every note perfectly. Did you KNOW that Eric is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three (3) times????? As has been mentioned, I would agree that listening to the original recordings or live concert footage from their early days together would be a high recommendation. Cream is considered an early "super group" both in their sound and in performance. I had the privilege of seeing them in Sacramento, CA in 1968, White Room was the first song of the set. A year later, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker were in another "Super Group" that created only 1 LP and they were called Blind Faith. Definitely worth a listen. Love British Blues/Rock.

Here is a reaction suggestion: "Who's Next" by The Who. It is one of the rare albums that falls into the category of "perfect", not a bad song on it. Not to mention it features one of the most innovative, wild, utterly unique drummers ever to pick up a set of sticks. And the best rock bass player of all, John Entwistle.

Do yourself a favor and watch the whole reunion concert CD. They played their entire catalog. You’ll be air guitaring like a mad women before it’s over. We were in San Francisco visiting family in 1967 and I begged my parents to let me go to a Cream concert with my older cousins that was happening at the Fillmore but I was only 12, so “NO.”
