We're not going to get mad at you. This is one of their most "radio friendly" songs (yes, even despite the harsh vocals), so it's definitely not one of their most spectacular compositions music-wise, but the video is very cool, so a lot of people start there. And you are right, even if they do have cool MVs, like this one, Sirens or Arcana, with Epica live is always the way to go (except for Sirens, the MV is far superior). The energy they bring to their live performances is unmatched. They are all phenomenal. And when they bring in a full orchestra, a choir and/or acrobats, then it's just God tier.

The only single from their 2012 5th album, Requiem For the Indifferent. Lyrics by Simone, music by Simone and Coen. This is a good one when someone asks for one of their music videos. The song was played live at the Retrospect 10th anniversary show, with full orchestra and choir. From that show, "Design Your Universe" is one of my favorites. And "Sancta Terra" (feat Floor) from there is often suggested. Also try "Code of Life" live in Amsterdam 2023, at AFAS Live.

This is an interesting song to start with. It was an early hit for them, but it is not indicative of Epica. Epica should be listened to live. There are two songs I would suggest. The first is a recently released song called Arcana Live at Symphonic Synergy. They performed with a full orchestra, choir, and a children's choir. This song will give you the chills you expected. During the pandemic, Epica did a virtual live concert called Omega Alive. Listen to the song Once Upon a Nightmare. It will have you checking for goosebumps.

I dunno if I would agree that this is one of those songs that work a lot better live than on video. It's one of the few Epica music videos that I think is worth watching (I'm normally not really a MV fan, I usually think the whole concept of MV's are just a tad corny). Instead, I think maybe because the MV is so visually captivating, it draws one's attention away from the music itself. Also, listening to a piece of music once, with a camera pointed at your face, is not the way most of us approach new music. Maybe just the pecularities of making a reaction video got in the way of fully enjoying it this time? I dunno, but it's something to consider. That being said, "Storm the Sorrow" is a slightly poppy Epica track, and for grizzled metalheads like us (hah) it might feel just a wee bit restrained compared to what we're used to. Anyway, I see many people asking for the new song "Arcana". I'm not personally a fan, as it's a bit restrained as well. I recommend checking some of the lesser-known Epica songs, especially part 1 and 3 of "Kingdom of Heaven" (both from Omega Alive) and "Serenade of Self-Destruction" and "Monopoly on Truth" (both from Retrospect 2013 with a live orchestra+choir).

I have always felt the same about this song. I always love it when I watch the video or listen to it, but I never gravitate towards it. I really think Epica have a massive catalog of songs which are much better. There is a live version of it from their 2013 Retrospect 10th anniversary show with full orchestra and choir. Beyond the Matrix live at the Zenith would be a good live choice.

Thanks, Great Christmas present. TBH it is not a song that I would have suggested for a first listen. Would usually suggest ‘Unleashed’ Live from the retrospect concert or maybe ‘Once upon a Nightmare’ from the Omega Alive livestream as a first listen. You could however give yourself a great current xmas present and check out their most recently posted new song ‘Arcana’ live from the symphonic synergy concert where they played it live for the first time.

Well, if you like Nightwish and Epica, you definitely must listen to Within Temptation or at least try it. They are an excellent front-female symphonic metal band. Maybe you already know them and that's why I don't see any of them on your channel. Otherwise, it would be great to watch them here to give us your opinion.
