I highly recommend you to watch and maybe react to the Winter War movie, and also the Unknown Soldier. Both are masterpieces.

My Granpa fought three wars; Winter war, second war against russia and in the last war he was throwing German soldiers out of Finland. In spite of that all he never said what he did in the war, never said one thing about the war. He newer wounded, and it was special for many who knew him. When he died I learned he was a sniper, and I understand why he never spoke about war. There was one thing he learned me for really; how to shoot with rifle. Now I know why. This Finnish film about war really takes its place among war movies, it´s worth watching. Thank you for reacting. Greets from Finland. Take care.

Talvisota movie brought new standpoint to war movies like spaghetti westerns brought to westerns. No bs hero stories with shiny weapons and good haircuts. If it had done in english speaking world it would be much more honoured. Not saying it is not now but not so many people know it. It is a harsh movie and leaves you feeling empty and sad. And that is why it is so good.

There are technically two versions of Talvisota: the theatrical film release, and the 5-part television miniseries, which is basically the movie but with a big bunch of extra scenes that were cut from the final film release. The film has been released with English subtitles, not sure about the miniseries, but if you can get your hands on it, it's the go-to version, IMO

Is this true for Talvisota, too, or are you refererring to the newest Unknown Soldier?

Only the movie version has been remastered for 4K blu-ray quality. The miniseries also was promised to be upgraded to 4K quality and published in streaming services.

It was an actual tactic: Disable the tank by stopping the tracks with a log of wood and then destroying the tank with the Molotov cocktail. Even though the weapon was already used in the Spanish civil war the Winter War was where it got it's name after the Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov. He famously called the bombs dropped in Finland as "food aid", coining the term Finns used for Soviet bombs: "Molotov bread baskets". There comes the saying, "We have a cocktail to go down with that bread" from where the weapon actually gets it's name as "Molotov Cocktail".

Talvisota from 1989 is generally considered a good movie and I'd recommend you to watch it. You'll also spot many young actors there who later became very well known in Finnish media.

Definitely recommended! Love the film (and the 5 part series).. It shows the whole path of the Winter War very well, beginning from home and till the end of the war. Big film portraying some of the most important moments of Finnish history and identity.

This is a great demonstration of the importance of infantry support for tanks. That kind of easy trick can and indeed did work against tanks back then. Wouldn't have happened if the enemy had used tanks correctly together with infantry. But they didn't, thank God.

Definitely worth watching,. I've tried to watch the orignal Unkown Soldier several times from 1955, but never could finish it, even when I was ordered to in petty officer's trainng. They showed it in Finnland every Independence Day and I fell asleep. The rest of them are worth it though and there are filmatitations of even older wars (mostly agains Russia) which are fun.

The year they fought in the winter war, there was A LOT of snow and the temperature was REALLY LOW, -40 Celsius. But when they shot this movie there was not snow at all. So you can have a little wrong picture of the winter war. But the movie is ok.

The Winter War started at he end of November 1939. 30.11.1939 to be exact. The subtitles can't catch nuances in the lingo, but the movie itself is pretty good. -You might understand better how much we "love" and "trust" our neighbor. Soon russia is going to fall down permanently.

One movie I recommend is "Simo". It's total fiction about a Finnish guy returning home in Northern Finland and counters Nazis who (if I remember correctly) are leaving Finland and destroying everything they can same time (end of Fin-USSR war and Germans who were helping Fins had to be throw out). Again characters are total fiction but the reason why Nazis were in Finland actually happened. Wild ride and very few words in that movie.

I always thought the novel Talvisota was a late and unsuccessful attempt to write a novel about the Winter War following the example of the Unknown sokdier, a way better novel of the Continuation war. The same goes with the films. The new version of Unknown soldier is truly a good movie, Talvisota not so much.

Finnish films are usually terrible. I'm pretty sure that if an actor accidentally delivers a line in a natural-sounding way, he'll be punished for it and the scene will be retaken so many times that the end result will look like a 7-year-old suffering from bad ramp fever or a standard performer anywhere in Kotikatu or Salatut elämät etc. There are also good films, Aki Kaurismäki's films are partly brilliant and they don't talk fluff for nothing. Raid is also funny, as if this new Sisu movie had been made at least in some way a more believable version of the tough kund, Raid kills in the house and in the garden. The mercy killer aka Armomurhaaja can also be recommended. The latest Unknown Soldier is good as a war movie, there is no point in feeling the heroism and sublimity of death, when a bullet hurts, it's over. A person is not Rambo, but dies when shot.
