These three actors are native Poles. This German who appears first played a German in another very popular war series in Poland. Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz, this is not the real name of this hero. His real name is Franciszek Dolas, and he invented this name, surname and place of birth on the spur of the moment to confuse the Germans.

If he had documents, they would have written down his details from them and not tried to write them down by ear. And besides, he would have to be very lucky to find documents with such data that Germans cannot pronounce....🤨

This comedy consists almost entirely of similar jokes. The title itself indicates this, because the main character slept through the station where he was supposed to get off, he was going as a Polish soldier to the front, and he was sure that the war broke out because of his fault. This comedy contains not only situational jokes, but also makes fun of the vices of other nations, including the English and Italians.

I watched it few months ago and what I noticed is that countries from eastern block were treated differently than these from western Europe. Austrians and Germans are obvious targets but then we have Italians for whom the most important thing is a brothel in the company, French who have a colonial rule over Lebanon and are not especially interested in fighting, Brits who think that Franek is some dumb peasant because he breaks the 5 o'clock tea ceremony. I like the movie but it was recorded in specific times and you have to be aware of that.

I am not Polish. I don't speak the language (have a Ukrainian background). I've watched this film a couple of times with English subtitles, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It's very clever and extremely funny! That particular scene is hysterical! And... would you believe... I have practised the pronunciation of the hero's name with my Polish-native-speaking friends - and I can say it, accent free Yippee! 😊

It's true, it's a great comedy from many years ago. In fact, the fate of the main character was also told in two subsequent parts. The humor is really great! However, I am afraid that people who do not know Polish mentality and history will not fully understand all the humorous situations and texts. This film shows the funny side of the Poles' mentality, but also their assessment of other nationalities and the relationship between them. There was the Foreign Legion, there were British, there were Yugoslavs, there were Italians and, of course, Germans. The time when this film was created was a time when the trauma of the war was still present in the memory of Poles, and a comedy of this type was supposed to be a kind of balm for the tormented souls of Poles. Previously, there was a period when a lot of films were made showing martyrdom, suffering, bravery and the senselessness and hopelessness of war. Films of this period were supposed to bring some smiles to the gray and sad lives of Poles!!!

In the movie, the main character actually makes all those names up to make it super hard for the Germans to process him. The way he does it with a straight face adds extra humor to the scene :)

Pretty much everyone in Poland knows the movie (and the main song, famous Red Army Choir always used to sing it during their concerts in Poalnd) by heart. It follows adventures of Franciszek Dolas across all european/African fronts during ww2 creating what is essentially map of stereotypes about various nations. the songs is Andrzej Żarnecki - Róża i bez; here's performance of the choir /watch?v=_nrilETa9gk As for difficulty of the phrases - they are easy for polish speakers

BTW I saw this scene a few times before moving to Poland, it was familiar to me. Now having lived in Poland and having getting familiar with the language a bit closer, those are already much easier to read, remember and repeat. So this is really not a big problem as soon as you even start getting along well with the language in general.

A ja to miałem kiedyś taką sytuację, że złapał mnie policjant za przekroczenie prędkości. It's not really that strange, because it makes fun of the Polish armed forces in the West (the evacuation of the Polish army via the Balkans and the Mediterranean, then the Polish formations in the North African and Italian campaigns, etc.), and the ending is also packed with communist/Soviet propaganda. Still hilarious, though, especially with the situational jokes and the way it exploits all those national stereotypes.

Personally, I would recommend you the comedy Sexmission from 1983. It is very funny. There are no typical Polish subtexts in it, it has universal content. I recommend it.

While I second the suggestion, I disagree with the lack of Polish (and especially communist time) context. The most renowned has actually been removed from the movie after it has been released for the first time (Direction: east, there must be some civilisation over there; the scene alone can be found in KZbin). The whole decadence was the reference to people trying to follow western culture under the communism. However, I've watched the movie with a Dutch colleague and he could generally catch most of the humor so it's definitely a good suggestion. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it is still available on KZbin (especially with English subtitles).

Maybe not the most popular names, but every Pole could recite it even woken up In the middle of the night, because it's legendary. Grzegorz is actually a pretty popular name, english equivalent is Gregory, and the rest is pure polish magic (although I believe the Village name is invented for the comedic effect, it could easily be real, because we do have places with similar names).

Each character in this movie speaks their own language only (*). Germans speak German, Italians speak Italian, and so on. Main character of course speaks Polish. (*) one exception - there is a moment in 3rd part when a Polish friar (a priest? I don't remember) mistakenly is trying to communicate with the main character in Russian.

I actually have that same name, Grzegorz. When I lived in South Africa (1990 - 2020) I often used that tounge twister of a name as my own. My brother used that name and surname to annoy cold callers. They once asked him to spell it for them, his response was "no". There is another polish classic tounge twister which you should try: it is a poem called "chrząszcz"

Its probably one of the most well known clips from a polish movie, at least in poland. I go back to it once in a while because it always manages to get a chuckle out of me. It's quite easy to say for native polish speakers, but now knowing polish characetrs makes it hell for sure lol Your attempt wasn't bad tho! This was a really great comedy. One can come back to it again and again and it still funny. And this is one of the best scenes. Although the whole comedy is very good. By the way, the Polish comedies in the past, like in communist times (for instance of Stanisław Bareja as a director), were very good and funny. And You should definitely also watch a famous Polish comedy titled "Seksmisja" (it's from 1983, directed by Juliusz Machulski) - it was really good and still watched and very well known in Poland.

You should see commedies of director Stanisław Bareja , the master of Polish comedy of absurd Titles like : "Miś" (The Teddybear), THE MASTERPIECE comedy of absurd great movie "Co mi zrobisz jak mnie złapiesz ? " (What will you do to me if you catch me?) "Ostatnia paróweczka Hrabiego Barry Kenta" ( The last sausage of Barry Kent`s count ) "Poszukiwany , poszukiwana" (Wanted he, wanted she) "Rozmowy kontrolowane" ( The censored phonecalls) And many more like " Nie lubię poniedziałku" ( I don`t like monday )

Uwielbiam polskie "stare" filmy..❤ bo teraz już nie robią takich filmów (według mnie). Uwielbiam "Znachora", "Wyjście awaryjne", "Kogel - mogel". Yeah, I lived in England for 20 years, my first name is Grzegorz as well and my Surname even though very short, barely anyone can say it here, even with practice as some of my friends try to do. I always ask people not to and call me by my Nicknames. To be honest after all these years I don't really like when people try to force me to teach them how to pronounce it. This film is a great comedy though!!

Niejako psuje to zakończenie serii ...

@@MarcusBrutusPL zdaję. znam naszą historię bardzo dobrze. ale prlu już nie ma, a jesteśmy my i śmieszny film, który lubię. i lubię też myśleć, że scenarzysta trochę zrobił tym tekstem cenzorów w konia. jak dla mnie, franek miał na myśli po prostu polskę, i nie myślał o szerszej polityce. może to naiwne z mojej strony ale hej, to tylko film. pozdrawiam

the best part - he was named Franek Dolas. and he told fake name to piss off SS XD. the movie is called - Jak rozpętałem 2 Wojnę Światową - How I Unleashed World War 2, I think there are available english subs to that movie.

That movie has 3 parts. I absolutely adore it, even though I generally dislike comedies. Those however are absolutely hilarious :D In Poland everyone can pronounce the name, but the town (Chrząszczyrzeboszyce) is known for breaking a few tongues :)

I really advice you to watch this film. It's all about how Polish see other nations and themself. My wife is Brazilian (Polish descendent but speaks only Portuguese and some English) my kids were born here in UK and speaks fluent Polish, Portuguese and English) and this move is our favourite to watch together. My wife and kids do not get all jokes in movie - you have to be born and rise in Poland to understand all - but still laugh - my daughter loves part with ''Palce!'' ''Panzer?!?!?!'' but first time I had to explain her that ''panzer'' means tank. After this they started doing jokes (typical dad's jokes) within all languages they know and same sound - different meaning - which this time I do not get all - till they explain me ;-)

Great comedy. A few years ago, Witold Waszczykowski became the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, most Poles had an association with this scene ;) Generally, we are very amused by the "murderousness" of our language. There used to be shirts with the inscription "I speak Polish and what is your superpower"?

Pronounce of this name is ez for us Poles, definitely more difficult to pronounce is his birth place, still not so difficult as a classic polish tongue twister "No i cóż, że ze Szwecji" ie. About the whole 3 parts of the movie it has a cult status in Poland (at least in my generation born in 70's) and it should be enjoyable to watch for a foreigner since it is not so deeply rooted in polish culture like "Twardowsky" series which you watched already, it has more "generic" and universal humour.

Agreed with other. Any native Polish speaker can easily pronounce this. This is why this secene is so much more fun. And yes this is a great movie, and good series of movies. It is old, but still classic and most people in Poland know it well.
