On Novemeber 1st, 1998, his brother passed away. Just a few days later on November 5th his wife passed away due to breast cancer. He took some time off and even thought about ending his career completely. This song was his own coping with grief. It is an homage to his dead wife.

The most people think that the german language is'nt a friendly language. They are so wrong. This singer and songwriter is a real artist to find kind of words wich can build these words into pictures in your mind. That gives you a huge massive feeling about his songs and the Story behind that. Herbert Grönemeyer is one of the last real songwriter we have in Germany.

I lost my wife to cancer in 2018 after 28 wonderful years. We met with 16 and stayed together since. When she had to go, she was 43. I stayed by her side to the very last breath, told her that everything will gonna be OK. She also gave me the task to try to get happy again as possible. This song describes to darn exactly our relationship and I am crying every time I hear it. As a German I must say that our language is too often described as too hard. There is so much more than Rammstein. Thank you so much for this video and your honest reaction.

The first time he performed this song live was on a tv show where EVERYONE, every guest, every performer exchanged at least a few words with the host. Herbert was the only one who sang the song and left the stage. You could see it took all his strength to get through the song without crying. When he finished, everyone was crying cause we all knew the story behind it and everyone also knew that as hard as the whole process may have been he was going to be ok in the end. He even found love again. ❤❤❤

What this actually meant was that Germany only existed in the heads of poets and thinkers; politically, unity seemed unattainable, so people dreamed of a united fatherland. It was never the country of poets and thinkers, although it did produce some, but these were very few compared to the total population. At some point that turned around, quite a misunderstanding.

Music is universal. And this song is a masterpiece! It reminds you of your aunt who passed away. My condolences for your loss, my dear. You don't cry ugly tears, you cry because of true emotions. If you want to hear another masterpiece by Herbert Grönemeyer, then listen to "Halt mich"...an amazing love song...but listen to the live version as well. I'm wishing you a wonderful weekend. Best regards, Carsten.

I love your reaction. Even the hardest men should have to cry at this one. Everyone who is that emotionless that he/she does not cry at this has serious problems and i can't trust. My respect for you has dramatically increased by seeing this human side of yours. Feel hugged by me. I love you.

I also know this song for quite a long time, but this time it also got me crying, this deep sadness and feeling of loss just caught me. Its this universal feeling we all have, when thinking about the ones we have and the ones we lost.

I see all these reactions to this song. I see people crying. Moved by Grönemeyer's unbelievable way with words. And then I get a little sad, because even though the translation is really good, it just can't capture the impeccable ability to choose the exact right words that man is gifted with. And then I get happy again, because the beauty of his lyrics still transcends language and time.

I've been watching your channel for a while, but never left a comment. But it's time. Your energy, your emotion, of what's on display... it just blows my mind - from deeply moving to highly interesting, and everything in between, you just nail it! I've cried with you (even when I knew the original performance), I've laughed with you, the whole spectrum of emotions is covered. Music is everything! I just bawled my eyes out watching this, and I've been chasing the vulnerability and just letting go emotionally - this was perfect! For some context, both his brother and his wife died within four days of each other. Rips your f*cking heart out. Much love from a German living in Australia!

As lots of german fans I also was touched very deeply at that time when Herbert being one of the most famous singers lost his brother and his beloved wife. We all were and are still deeply impressed by his power, his emotional strength to share his grief with his audience. I appreciate it very much that you share your emotions and emathy using a very good translation of the lyrics.
