On Novemeber 1st, 1998, his brother passed away. Just a few days later on November 5th his wife passed away due to breast cancer. He took some time off and even thought about ending his career completely. This song was his own coping with grief. It is an homage to his dead wife.

I lost my wife to cancer in 2018 after 28 wonderful years. We met with 16 and stayed together since. When she had to go, she was 43. I stayed by her side to the very last breath, told her that everything will gonna be OK. She also gave me the task to try to get happy again as possible. This song describes to darn exactly our relationship and I am crying every time I hear it. As a German I must say that our language is too often described as too hard. There is so much more than Rammstein. Thank you so much for this video and your honest reaction.

The first time he performed this song live was on a tv show where EVERYONE, every guest, every performer exchanged at least a few words with the host. Herbert was the only one who sang the song and left the stage. You could see it took all his strength to get through the song without crying. When he finished, everyone was crying cause we all knew the story behind it and everyone also knew that as hard as the whole process may have been he was going to be ok in the end. What this actually meant was that Germany only existed in the heads of poets and thinkers; politically, unity seemed unattainable, so people dreamed of a united fatherland. As lots of german fans I also was touched very deeply at that time when Herbert being one of the most famous singers lost his brother and his beloved wife. We all were and are still deeply impressed by his power, his emotional strength to share his grief with his audience. I appreciate it very much that you share your emotions and emathy using a very good translation of the lyrics.
