Agreed. It would at least have been nice to acknowledge how her playing was so interactive with what Jeff was doing and made him sound even better. She, like Beck, is a tremendously empathetic player who is able to nuance around the notes with a great rhythmic sense. I mean, most bassists would simply play long, sustained notes in this tune to provide a cushion, but Tal constantly moving and grooving. She 'gets' it, which is probably why at the age of 21 she was not only in Beck's band but had already played with the likes of Herbie Hancock. She is brilliant.

Jeff's playing first came to my attention in 1966 when I was only 13 and he blew me away completely. Have followed his career ever since and have been lucky to have seen him on several occassions. For me he is the only guitarist and his passing broke my heart, being a guitarist myself, when ever my playing get's in a rut I put on some of Jeff's music and I am inspired to pick up the guitar and try harder. Sadly there will never be another Jeff Beck but it's great to see you people who play guitar listening to Jeff and hopefully being inspired to pull sounds out of the guitar like Jeff did.

Thanks. Stevie Wonder wrote this song for Syreeta. He'd also 'gifted' it for Beck to do later. The metal nut was on the first Strat Plus guitar which I still have yet I changed everything out.The nuts warp, which is why Beck would keep many spares.
@JackJenningsGuitarist Жыл бұрын
Yeah apparently it was an exchange for Jeff Beck guesting on Stevie Wonder's record. And yes that's right it was the Strat Plus that has the metal nut.
@MrCherryJuice Жыл бұрын
@@JackJenningsGuitarist Beck's metal nut is a Trevor Wilkinson Roller Nut. Though he has been involved with various ventures, currently Vintage brand guitars, Wilkinson, a Brit from Southport up above Liverpool, spent time at Fender. Apparently there were a couple variations of that nut over time as there were issues with the first one including thicker strings snagging etc., leading to some players to denounce them. Beck probably has the latter version with the wider cut, as after a couple weeks on tour and once his fingers toughend up he would up his strings to 11s and possibly 12s, something Hendrix had suggested to him. Wilkinson told me that Beck once purchased a bag of about 20 nuts. Worth noting that the Fender Signature Jeff Beck Strat - even the Custom Shop version - uses and LSR roller nut, not the Wilkinson.
@muimasmacho6 ай бұрын
The Wilkenson nut on the Strat Plus models got a bad rap for buzzing. Because without string trees, and without an angled headstock, the strings have almost no downforce, (by intentional design!!!), so the strings can float slightly in the nut slots, which leads to buzzing. The secret to the Wilkerson, especially, is to wind an extra string wrap or two, lower onto the pegs to introduce a MINIMAL amount of downforce to keep the strings in constant contact with the rollers in the nut slots. It’s a simple “adjustment.” Locking tuner “upgrades,” where no wraps are required, allow the strings to “float” even higher in respect to the nut grooves, so they actually introduce even more rattle. 😶 On newer strats the tuner pegs are staggered in height, (shorter) to provide minimal downforce, without having to wrap the posts. Something to think about.

On volume swells, I think it's possible that he might have had a special volume knob designed to fit his purpose. I remember hearing that Edward Van Halen had a volume knob that only rotated like 90 degrees or something like that.

I find it is easier to use the roll volume technique on a telecaster. You use your pinky to roll the volume knob after you pick the note. You can play runs of notes fairly fast with a little practise. You might checkout "Roy Buchanan - Live from Austin TX" Nov 1976. I think Roy pioneered the technique and used it extensively in his rendition of "Hey Joe" at that concert.

I will add this true story about Jeff in another site on You-Tube. I was a school kid when it happened. One day a new boy came into our class. We were told that this new kid would appear. He came in and sat down in the front before the Music teacher came in. It was well before the Bell, because we were all about 14 and in a special Art Class called Art one and Art two, for the last two groups in this section of Art in the school specialising in Art. The boy who came in was called Jeff Beck, and we already knew him as he had appeared several weeks before. One day he came in with a pile of stuff in his hands and went straight to the back of the room and sat down on the floor in the Teacher's cupboard which was ajar. We had some time to go before the bell went for the afternoon session. The boys at the back of the room talked to Jeff, and he told them that he was trying to make a guitar. I immediately thought, that oh dear, there is no way Jeff could make a guitar out of what he had there! However a few sounds came out of the cupboard, and I thought, " We did not see any miniature radios in his hands, what could that be?". Eventually he came out and sat in the front. It was a mystery, but since then Jeff has told people that he did try to make quite a few small guitars which did not make many good sounds, so he was trying his best. Eventually he came out and sat at his desk. and our music lesson. began. We really wanted him to succeed, in his endeavours, and respected him as he was a bit older than us. This was in our last year of schooling. He was talented in drawing which is quite usual in musicians and artists. All the class would have tried to find any news of him over the years and eventually after I had had children I heard that he had been playing guitar up the River Thames in a famous place and then when I moved to Huddersfield Yorkshire, I heard, "High Ho, Silver Lining!" which he had been made to sing, and thought to myself, well he might not like that but he is going in the right direction. I imagine that most of the class would have looked out for news of him. As time went on he became more and more famous, and I was pleased for him. He certainly had rules to live by, as a boy came up to him and began boasting that his Dad had made £140,000. Jeff told him quietly that that was not something he should boast about because other pupils who are poor, or who do not have much money would feel dreadful, "Don't say things like that!" said Jeff," you could hurt other people's feelings!" I remembered that all my life, that Jeff already had rules to live by in order to respect others, and I was pleased that he was like that! Also the story that Jeff tried to make guitars was also true, as they still existed in their tiny forms, like a museum of Jeff Beck's past teenage life, and his ambitions! Cynthia Allen-McLaglen

I saw Jeff in the Yardbirds in 1965 and that was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with him and his incredible playing. I saw him on a number of occasions over the years, with The Jeff Group (where I played in a band that supported them), BBA and other various lineups. It was such a shock when he passed; I thought he'd be in my life forever, for some reason. But he actually is - I still enjoy his music and it continues to influence my playing. I wish I could make a Strat sound like that! I play humbucker guitars because I don't like the glassiness/clangy essence of Strats - Jeff gets very non-Strat tones from them.

PS. You're totally wrong about the Strat bridge and range of whammy bar. Just listen to Pink Floyd's "Sorrow" on the "Pulse" video. Set up properly it's as versatile as a locking trem. But you ought to know this stuff? Finally, just to correct your pupil, he doesn't use the whammy at all on Nessum Dorma! Sorry guys.
@JackJenningsGuitarist10 ай бұрын
Well I have played locking-nut guitars and the strings do react differently especially when you fully depress the bar. My point here is that other guitarists I know who doing a lot of whammy bar stuff with a locking-system, have said it is a lot harder to do what Jeff does with a non-locking system. So it just makes it more impressive what Jeff does. As for the Nessum Dorma, in this version he is using the whammy bar virtually all the time. So perhaps you are talking about a different version, but I doubt it. It's hard to imagine Jeff doing this piece without it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYu7eomDmb2mjLcsi=HyByX27_ITVFO4UC I hope you are enjoying or getting some pleasure out of the videos, dispute some differences in opinion. I'm sure we all love Jeff so let's keep enjoying the music.

I meant in general he was able to do this stuff on a standard strat if needs be. He was know for turning up to sessions just with a new off the rack guitar and still doing all these magical things. Obliviously he has his signature guitar with mod etc, but my point is he was overly reliant on that and could do amazing things with basic equipment. I know musicians who have worked with him and there are stories of him doing a sound check just with a practice amp because the stack had not arrived. But still his guitar sounded massive and had this spacious quality that know one else would get from a little amp. That's the kind of quality that I'm trying to get across about Jeff Beck.
