This is a track from John's studio album The Again, John wrote 9 of the fourteen songs on the album; 4 of the song were written for John by American singer/songwriter Richard Marx, Richard actually played the piano for this track. A great version of this song is from the 1994 ARIA Awards, crossing to John playing a concert in Canberra with special guest Richard Marx.

Richard Marx channeling his inner Styx. There is is a song on the Kilroy was here album called "Dont let it end" that has some very similar phrases and moments. Not saying Richard plagiarised it but maybe borrowed from it. I remember thinking that when it first heard it 30 odd years ago. Dennis De Young's voice is almost up there with Johns but not quite.

I agree with you on the interpretation one can get from his song....It would be a beautiful romantic song for your loved one as well. And also it's such a touching song for ones child or new born....John gives me chills every time he sings even when it's a ballad ....Thanks for the reaction...as usual you are awesome. What an entertainer and what a great song, Iam in my seventies and I have been a john farnham fan for as long as I can remember. One evening I was watching the Don Lane show and John performed Bridge over troubled water, let me just say that I have yet to see a performance by a singer that comes close to him. for mine he is and will always be the VOICE. Love the way that John couldn't say Chong's name because it would have made him lose it as it's such an emotional song to start with... Chong (Lim) replaced David Hirschfelder when he left to go to write scores for movies in the US.... he is a brilliant musical director and has been with John for decades now... I knew beforehand that the song was about John's children being born, but it can be about whomever you want it to be about really... the lyrics are multifunctional.....Love John, love the band and their bond. A fun one you may enjoy: in 1989 through 1993, in Australia, the was a Television comedy program called *The Money or The Gun* Among other things they ALWAYS included a featured entertainer performing the Led Zepplin classic _Stairway to Heaven_ in their own unique style... I love this song. When you understand it is about a parent's love for their child, the lyrics melt your heart. John has the ability to make you feel the lyrics. He has two sons and kept them very much out of the spotlight. I believe his son Robert is in a metal band in the US.
