Please do the Kashmir performance live at the O2 Arena Celebration Day concert; to see them at an older age with Bonham’s son and delivering an exceptional performance after almost 40 yrs since they first formed is mind blowing. For us Zeppelin fans from the beginning, we never thought they would perform together again. Over 20M people attempted to buy a ticket to this concert, set a world record. In my mind, you can never see or hear Kashmir too often; it is an epic masterpiece.

In my top 2 Zeppelin songs of all time (some days it's #1, some days it's #2). This song never fails to put me in a trance and take me on a journey of discovery. What amazes me most (in the studio version) is the complex sound that comes out of such simplicity; simple riff, no guitar solo, no groovy bass line, simple keyboards, simple drums (except for a few fills in the last 90 seconds), and rather simple vocals (other than a few Astral wails). I don't know how they did it, but by chilling out and creating a monotonous drone, they were able to transcend all that came before and all that would come after. This is beyond genius; this is catching the cosmos in a jar and releasing it as Led Zeppelin.

The highlight of this song here are the final drum fills 14:53 - 15:31, -- rising and rising and rising in power, like rolling thunder, seeming like they couldn't get any better... and then they do, time after time. Sublime, heart stopping.

This performance took place after a two year show layoff following the death of Robert's young son, Karac, from a viral infection. It was not known if Zep would ever return from that. They did two nights in Knebworth, one week apart, just prior to the release of their last studio album. It was the last album to be released while all band members were still alive, and it was called In Through The Out Door. Live performances for songs you've already heard that are a must to react to include: Trampled Underfoot, live at Earl's Court 1975; Kashmir live at the 2007 O2 Arena reunion (with John's son Jason on drums); and In My Time of Dying live at Earl's Court 1975. @@SalvoG On the final studio album (while they were all still alive, In Through The Out Door), Robert wrote the powerful ballad, All My Love, as a tribute to Karac. He went on to sing this song on their 1980 European tour, and to this day, I don't know how its possible to have the strength to do that.

This concert was performed after Robert plant had surgery on his vocal chords… I believe Robert himself called this performance ‘mediocre’ and critics were not very kind either. It’s crazy how over critical an artist can be on himself even though he killed this performance, not to mention Robert was likely still grieving the death of his child

Jimmy Page had been influenced by Eastern/Arabic/Indian sound since around 1964 - even before George Harrison was. Jimmy had visited one of those countries (can't remember which one off hand) way back in the early 60's and was attached to the music immediately. You could definitely hear some of it in the Yardbirds music after he joined the group. Especially in 'White Summer' from the 'Little Games' album. 👍

Hypnotic rhythm, unique (Zeppelin trademark) and ultra original format (poly rhythmic) and sound. Nothing else like it in the rock genre. Epic. The more you hear it the more you appreciate it. You recognize Jimmy and Robert pretty much ALL the time. But live ... Bonham (rivets you, can't take your eyes off of him) and JPJ show the same mastery. Electric. You feel their power and see the beauty in their performance. 3 hours of having your eyes bug out. Singularly unique.

The guitar is in an alternate tuning of D-A-D-G-A-D (sometimes just read as 'dadgad'), which Jimmy also referenced as his "CIA tuning", which stands for Celtic/Indian/Arabic. This tuning gives the guitar sound versatility to move from a county/folk type sound to a sitar-like sound to a West African drone and beyond. So, while the guitar is more underlying in this, it adds to the exotic grandeur of the song.

I was a teenager in the late 70's, and LZ tours never stopped in the city where I live. All we had were concert posters to look at as we listened to their music, wondering what songs were being played. Then concert footage was released, and decades later...it was a pleasant surprise to see what those photos captured. Think there's a live performance of The Immigrant Song from 1972, which is a cool way to see how the band evolved from the early days to this.

Knebworth has never been a favorite of mine …..too many dark things has happened to the band at this point. The music is still good, but I look at them and see that Jimmy is a shadow of his former self because of drug addiction and Robert is so somber and his spirit is not the same after his sons death…and it shows. And it makes me sad to know that this was their last show in England because Bonham would drink himself to death in September of 1980. So many shadows at this point that it’s hard for me to just enjoy the music, knowing the backstory I know that’s why I prefer to skip to the O2 performance….seeing Jimmy healthy and in great form, and Robert arguably singing better than he did inn’79. And it’s a joy to see Jason do his dad so proud…….

No William, he did not. Plant has never been to Kashmir. If you had listened to ANY interview of Plant speaking about the lyrics you would know that it was influenced by his and Jimmy’s travels through Morocco. The use of Kashmir in the lyrics was poetic license, because he speaks of the desert as being his “Shangri-La…….and legend had it that Kashmir was actually the fabled Shangri-La. so your comment about a map to know where Kashmir is is fine, but your reasoning about why it’s called Kashmir is completely off base. The guitar and drums are in different time signatures, which create a driving tension. Your brain starts anticipating the beats where the two match up. This likely contributes to the "marching" feel you noticed that's hard to put in words.

I understand your trouble explaining the grip of this song. I would call it sonic dissonance. Your brain keeps trying to figure out the tune and beat, but just as you start to nod with the song it keeps switching up the beat or the chords so you are constantly chasing the song with your mind. You are fully engaged. Does that sound right?

Fakir maybe? I always imagine riding a camel through the desert with this song. Agree about the keys and drums - they own this one 🙂

It might be because everyone but Bonham is in 3/4 time and Bonham is in 4/4 time so it only meets up every 12th bar.

US forces against Iraq in 1991 in Operation Desert Storm when attacking Iraqi forces would blair Kashmir from huge loud speakers on military vehicles to psychologically destroy the Iraqi army.

@@bratgame8005 I'ts called psychological intimidation. I saw a documentary about it once. The US has been doing it for years in warfare. In fact, the US has a whole psychological warfare department within their military. Just like the scene from the movie "Apocolypse Now", where the attacking helicopter force was blairing "Ride of the Valkyries" from loud speakers on their attack helicopters when attacking their enemy, US forces did the same thing in 'Desert Storm' as their tanks were rolling across the desert plains in Saudi Arabia bearing down on the Iraqi army who invaded Kuwait. Not only would the tanks blast "Kashmir" from giant speakers, but Heavy Metal music in general to scare their enemy. Probably some of the last music Iraqi military personnel heard before they were killed. The whole Iraqi army or at least most of it was eventually annihaleted in a couple of days in operation Desert Storm. When I saw the documentary, "Kashmir" was the song being played when showing how it was done.

@@bubhub64 I don’t think I’ve seen the movie “ Apocalypse Now” Psychological warfare isn’t surprising. I just wondered what it is about “ Kashmir” that would be intimidating is this music so different from what they listen too that it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard or it just says the Americans are coming you better run? I can think of a lot of heavy metal songs that are louder & harder. I don’t generally like heavy metal music with groups like Megadeath & Metallica. I love Led Zeppelin tho. Thanks for the info.

@@bratgame8005 Probably because the Americans are coming, and you better run. To me, the song Kashmir eminates power and glory, and the ending of Kashmir played live always sounded apocalyptic to me, like doom is coming; like it came to the Iraqi's. Heres a link to the helicopter scene from Apocalypse Now. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZnGp3x-g8eCfsU

That screen thing just ruins it for me why? KZbin is letting you do most of their stuff and I've seen many reactors do this video without the distorting them so it just takes away from the whole idea of a live performance when you can't see them performing. If future live videos are going to be like this spoiling the essence of who they are......can go to a hundred other reactors channels n see this from start to finish. Try posting blocked videos to Vimeo.

copyright isnt distributed equally across youtube. No one knows the exact algorithm. For some, the use of the copyrighted content simply hasn't been detected/discovered, at least not yet, for any of a number of reasons, including the material not being in Content-ID, or Content-ID is not perfect, or it simply hasn't been discovered by the owner, or subterfuge on the part of the KZbin user to obscure the use. Im sure some of my videos have made it past YT and other people might be having problems with the same video. All I can do is try to upload it and if it doesnt work I have to edit it, or simply not upload it which is not an option because I put too much time into this. I can post to vimeo absolutely, but I would have to post the link to my community page and most people don't even look there. I even paid the $200 membership on vimeo to upload over the 5gig free limit. In the future I can ask the community if they rather go this route instead of watching the videos here on YT with limited visibility. Thank you Susanne.
