I think one difference between Canadian and American comedy is the way the audience is treated? American comedy will almost always telegraph the joke, labour the set up, land the punchline and then pause and play a laugh track, after which its not uncommon to have one of the characters "realize" the funny side of what was just said and repeat it or point it out in exposition, to make sure that the lowest common denominator has got the joke. Canadian comedy tends to rely on the audience to keep up and even in shows which are gentler, slower paced, will not labour punchlines, it will even omit them assuming the audience can figure it out for themselves. In trying to think of American shows that pay their audience the same respect, I thought of NewsRadio and Larry Sanders - I hadn't realized that there was a connection. NewsRadio was a great show and in recent years has been beginning to get the respect it deserves - it was treated terribly in the scheduling and went sightly under the radar in its day. But I think the style and delivery were much more Canadian than American - and the show had two Canadians in lead roles. What I hadn't realized that the show creator for NewsRadio also did Larry Sanders and Flight of the Conchords.

We’re glad to see that you enjoy our sense of humour here in Canada. We take after our cousins in Britain with our love of comedy and laughter and we’re not afraid of getting dirty which might have something to do with why you don’t stop laughing. British humour brilliantly written combined with the polite stereotype of the British making it even more funny.

1) Shot mostly on location in what folks in Toronto think of as "northern Ontario". 2) There is a 12 year-old boy in everyone that never goes away. You can read your Waugh, Shaw, Dickens, and even good old Sir Walter himself, but a good Dyck double entendre will always have one snorting milk out your nose. 3) Jared Keeso, the main protagonist in "Letterkenny," and essentially the show-runner, has a subsequent project entitled "Shoresy". Indeed, the Shoresy character himself shows up occasionally in Letterkenny, but off-screen. We hear his voice from the locker-room toilet. Shoresy maintains that same rapid-fire straight-faced uncouth dialogue, but has a stronger plot and generally much better writing, from a character-development perspective. It revolves around a minor league ice hockey team in the industrial (mostly mining) city of Sudbury (pop roughly 160k). If the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs were a British football team, they'd likely be in the National League or below. Shoresy himself (it's his nickname) doubles as a high school league hockey referee (the Bulldogs are nominally "professional" but many have side jobs to make ends meet; after all, that beer isn't going to pay for itself!). I'm sure you can find clips of it on KZbin. You'll enjoy it every bit as much as Letterkenny, maybe even more. 4) Like so many places in Ontario, Letterkenny is the name of a town in Northern Ireland.

TRUE STORY: On a film set years ago in Toronto, I met a girl who was embarrassed about her last name... Her parents had emigrated to Canada long ago, and had the name "Dyke" [pronounced as in Dick Van Dyke]. The girl's name was Ivanna, and one of her brother's was Harry [pronounced 'Hairy' with the parents accent], and another brother named Richard [who went by the short name "Dick"]... The 3 of them got teased so much, that they hounded their parents for years to please change their last name. The parents didn't understand why their name Dyke should be causing so many problems, but apparently after quite a few years, they complied with the wishes of the kids, and legally changed their last name -- to "Dick" [thinking that at least was close to the original, and one of their kids already used that as his first name, so obviously that would end all the problems]. So things were made worse because now the kids' names are Ivana Dick, Harry ['Hairy'] Dick, and Dick Dick... At first I thought she was joking, so she showed her birth certificate and her current driver's license, and other ID which she had with her... turned out she wasn't joking and it was true. She said they can mostly laugh about it now that they were older, but they went through hell with all the teasing while growing up.
